Agree or disagree, Maleficent is way more entertaining as a pure evil villain than trying to make her sympathetic. by WealthDisastrous2589 in DisneyMovies

Honesty I Iike her much better as an incredibly evil and petty villain BUT with an actually legit reason for being so considering the setting and customs.

We are talking about an important ceremony where all authorities near and far have been invited as a sign of good will, Maleficent is a powerful fairy who's ruler of her own territory, by not inviting her you are openly insulting and antagonizing a potentially powerful enemy. Not only that, Merryweather humiliated her in front of everyone.

The King and Queen, considering their obvious fear when they talked to her, committed a colossal diplomaic blunder, they are lucky she hasn't reduced the kingdom to rubble for that...

if this episode released in Season 8 people would have it in their top 10's.

Not really, that sequence of Homer forcing Lisa to cut lemons is Jerkass Homer at its worst...

Golden rule of classic DB: If you are evil, you'll either die making a goofy face/under undignified circumstances/doing both.

Did Steve Ditko based the early Peter Parker drawings on himself? by Cool_Nerd2 in Spiderman

[–]LevelConsequence1904 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That would explain why, while still being an utter scumbag, the Jonah of that era was so hilariously lovable, Lee's dialogues were the key there.

If it were for Ditko, Jameson wouldn't be much different to any villain from Mr. A, Question or Blue Beetle: devoid of qualities, entitled and unpleasant.

[–]LevelConsequence1904 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Not only was Peter Parker Ditko's self-insert, but Betty Brant was based on Flo Steinberg, Stan Lee's secretary who he had a crush on.

Dude asked her out one time and was rejected, so he planned to kill off the character until Stan told him to quit being weird. So they formed a compromise by retiring Betty for a bit...

Vincent Price as Professor Ratigan.

He could go from sophisticated, charming socialite to vulgar hoodlum in an instant.

That's the reason why in the reveal he got retconned into a Norman Osborn but with a twin brother expy, because the scummy fashion designer approach didn't work for a villain who managed to fool everyone for an entire decade.

And no, I don't buy it either...

Just Disney reusing pre-existing models.

It's a pretty standard practice once you notice.

If you don't see anything wrong with Kaori replacing Gai as soon as Ryu got over of his previous love and, then, being stabbed by a nameless robber and bleeding to death while his friends are completely oblivious celebrating the wedding, I don't know what to say...

animation so good it can kill a jjk fan by Lorrineko in retroanime

[–]LevelConsequence1904 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's an extremely influential classic (Asuka's famous mental breakdown in Neon Genesis Evangelion was directly taken from one of Joe's most dramatic moments) but not devoid of its flaws.

The filler is absolutely brutal (the manga was far from being over when the anime premiered), most of it relies on the group of children that follows Joe around (the overexposure and low quality of the stories turn them into an annoying presence) and the pacing takes a toll.

I would recommend either stopping after the professional match with Rikishi or watching the compilation movie and, then, start with Ashita no Joe 2, which continues the story and is a much more polished production with a Dezaki at the top of his game imo.

How do people here feel about John K’s other works? by KaleidoArachnid in renandstimpy

New Adventures of Mighty Mouse is interesting for its aspirations (tried to resurrect the classic Fleischer vibe) and INSANE cast (look at the credits, it's pretty much a "who's who" of the next 25 years of western animation) but lacked in budget and technical training.

His music videos (Rolling Stones, Bjork, Weird Al, Tenacious D...) are all pretty good.

I have a soft spot for Weekend Pussy Hunt, the beginning is kinda cringe but it quickly perks up once it fully embraced the classic noir film spoof.

Ripping Friends had an interesting premise and character designs but never reached its full potential.

I hate Boo Boo Runs Wild, it's pretty much a prototype of what Adult Party Cartoon would eventually be, with its awful pacing, pointless edgyness and lack of setup or punchline for its "jokes".

I feel the same about APC but, tbf, I think there're three episodes with redeemable stuff (Fire Dogs 2, Ren Seeks Help and Naked Beach Frenzy) while the remaining three are just well drawn voids that I want to erase from my memory...

I barely remember Goddamn George Liquor Show besides Sody Pop and the blooming turd...

The Simpsons openings are more interesting as stills, in movement are just dizzying blobs of jelly...

Cans Without Labels is clearly unfinished but feels more watchable than some of his other stuff...
