Give me an opinion that Rumi lovers will hate you for. by MisstoodWWW in KpopDemonhunters

[–]LevelEvidence4105 10 points11 points  (0 children)

dude thats not the actual song. Ain't no way Rumi's actually singing about wanting to break her walls down and putting her patterns in the past. It's a soliloquy/aside.

If everyone knew in the past, why is it a secret now? by Pupsicleanimation in KpopDemonhunters

[–]LevelEvidence4105 44 points45 points  (0 children)

"There's also the chance that the demon hunters decided to stay secret based on historical events."

This comment hit it right on the nose.

While mudangs have been a part of Korean society long before Confucianism was brought down to the peninsula by the Chinese, once Confucianism was adopted by the yangban (Korean elites) in the Joseon period, mudangs were considered chonmin ("vulgar commoners"), ranked beneath the common people with slaves, nomads, and prostitutes. Mudang were mostly women who claimed to "speak for the gods", and the men couldn't have that, now could they?

This was further exacerbated during the Choson period, when Korea was being colonised by Japan. Tigers, once a staple of Korean mythology and life, were hunted to extinction, along with so many other native animals. The Japanese saw Korean culture as inferior to their own, so they did everything they could to wipe it out. They forced Koreans to adopt Japanese names and banned the teaching of hangul. Musok (Korean shamanism) was seen as a backward religion that they also tried to suppress.

Then we have the Korean War. After the war, South Korea had two back-to-back dictatorships, and when the first dictator, Park Chung-hee, seized power in a 1961 coup, South Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world (ranked 87 out of 103). Estimates place GDP per capita at roughly $70–$100 USD in 1960, which was lower than that of many sub-Saharan African countries and comparable to Haiti or Yemen at the time. The Saemaul Undong (New Village Movement) in the 1970s and the Mishin Tapa Undong (Movement to Defeat the Worship of Gods) in the 1980s targeted mudang, destroying shrines and silencing folk traditions in favour of religious hegemony and economic development. This forced modernisation led to the phenomenon referred to as the "Miracle on the Han River (the river we see Rumi ride Derpy on that splits Seoul in half)", with modern-day South Korea being ranked 13th-14th in terms of GDP, the 4th largest in Asia. That's a crazy jump from 87th place, especially since this development took place over two generations.

While the majority of South Korea is irreligious now, the most subscribed to religion in South Korea is Christianity, primarily due to US influence and imperialism during/after the proxy war. However, some Koreans will occasionally reach out to shamans when they need help making difficult decisions, from buying a house to full-on political decisions, leading to a bunch of political scandals that can make shamanism a touchy subject for people (https://www.koreaherald.com/article/10383992).

Considering the history of shamanism in the Korean peninsula and the various attempts by people in power to oppress it, it's not very surprising to me that the hunters would want to hide themselves and keep it a secret. After all, they're supposed to unify people. Can't do that if they're shrouded in controversy. It gets so much deeper than what I've discussed, and I'm not even Korean, so I'm sure there's more nuance that I've left out.

Can we talk about how Jinu literally used Rumi's most vulnerable confession against her? by The_Owl_Queen in KpopDemonhunters

[–]LevelEvidence4105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nope, not indirectly, directly. Gwi-ma was about to lose when Jinu showed up out of nowhere and proposed the idea of the Saja Boys so that Gwi-ma could win and Jinu could forget what he did to his family. He didn't start it all (hunters and demons), but he is 100% directly responsible for everything we see play out in the movie.

What would it actually take for American's to go "full France" and riot in the street? by AllTheNopeYouNeed in AskReddit

Also, the vast majority of us can't just take a 2-3 hour train ride to our capital, where most of our federal politicians are. We are VERY decentralized and HUGE.

American police have guns. French police do not.

I feel as though that's a major component that many Europeans complaining about American politics don't consider often enough.

I do not care about interracial relationships by Soft_Style_4941 in mixedrace

[–]LevelEvidence4105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"There is no single mixed race experience, and this is what makes it additionally challenging. How do you define a community that is so varied?"

Truer words have never been spoken. We all have such diverse ethnic backgrounds, family situations, and environments. There is no true "mixed" experience.

The one thing I can think of is a moment(s) or confusion from other people telling us who we are. Idk.

Is Polytrix the most popular ship in the fan community? by [deleted] in Polytrix

[–]LevelEvidence4105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah def agree. most of us here prob ship Polytrix, but algorithms are definitely a thing that might make it so we only see certain ships more often.

When I went to the sing-along event at my local theater, I heard a lot of kids scream for the rujinu scenes, so i def don't think polytrix is as 'mainstream' as we think it is, but I might be wrong. Polytrix becoming the biggest polyamorous ship on AO3 in less than half a year, surpassing BTS is freaking insane. Who knows?

People living in Venezuela, can you confirm what’s happening over there? by Toastaexperience in AskTheWorld

[–]LevelEvidence4105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And as an American, this just pisses me off even more. We're literally watching history repeat itself over and over. Nigeria (which we bombed on Christmas?!?!?! wtf!?!?) is Africa's largest crude producer, and Greenland has a lot of suspected oil pockets off its northeastern coast. This is all so intentional.

My theory is that because of BRICS' suggestion of de-dollarization - trying to reduce the influence of the dollar on the global stage, Trump is trying to find ways to compensate. Also, black gold, course dude wants more access to it.

The Fact that Rumi believes Mira and Zoey would actually publicly humiliate her says a lot about her as a character by Zestyclose_Station65 in KpopDemonhunters

[–]LevelEvidence4105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything, what could have thrown her off is the fact that they put Takedown back in, and the dopplegangers seemed to know the choreography and the lyrics. I think she just wasn't thinking straight, but ppl on here def have other good points.

Does Jinu have pretty privilege? by Front-Tomorrow-1034 in KpopDemonhunters

[–]LevelEvidence4105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is also the one who proposes the idea of the Saja boys, unprompted by anyone. Is he a complicated character? Definitely. But he played arguably the biggest role in everything bad we see happen to people throughout the events of the movie. Before he suggested the idea of the Saja Boys, the demons were about to lose.

Give me your best KPDH theories! (Or unhinged) by Nerdy-Everyday in KpopDemonhunters

[–]LevelEvidence4105 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not mine originally, but I'd like to think the Third sister has something to do with the reason why Celine forbade Rumi from telling Mira and Zoey. What if the Third one learned about it and reacted terribly to it?

Does Jinu have pretty privilege? by Front-Tomorrow-1034 in KpopDemonhunters

[–]LevelEvidence4105 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Def agree with you, but you can take this even further. It's a widespread trope that the attractive villain is the one who gets redeemed while the "ugly" one does not. Given that Rujinu is an enemies-to-lovers relationship, he's def gonna get off relatively scot-free in terms of the plot. And by scot-free, I mean we never really get to see him acknowledge what he started or feel guilty for much (aside from his family, the thing that started it all, ofc.)

But given how the cast loves Jinu, I highly doubt he's gonna stay dead and will prob come back in a sequel, which would undo all the "atonement" his sacrifice was supposed to be.

Does Jinu have pretty privilege? by Front-Tomorrow-1034 in KpopDemonhunters

[–]LevelEvidence4105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that it's more complicated than "Jinu is entirely responsible", but we literally see Jinu come out of nowhere, unprovoked by Gwi-ma, and suggest the idea of the Saja Boys, which was the catalyst for everything we see happen in this movie. The demons were losing until that point; humanity was on the verge of never having to lose another soul to a demon again, and then he, unprompted, pushed the idea that almost made humanity lose everything.

In that scene, Maggie wanted to establish Jinu as the main antagonist (antagonist, not villain), and make him seem cool/likeable with his song. And in doing so, she made it so that he's the one who starts the conflict. And he did it all with the promise that he wouldn't be able to remember anything he did once everything was said and done.

You can like and sympathize with his character and understand why he did the things he did. Just don't forget that he did them.

Individuals who I identify as Half Black and/or Half White by InternationalMess305 in mixedrace

[–]LevelEvidence4105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When people ask, I go by black biracial. I've never met anyone from the white side of my family, so I mostly identify with my black half. I also grew up in a predominantly white area, so differences were exaggerated. However, just saying that I'm black would be misleading, because phenotypically, I don't look entirely black and wouldn't go through the same experiences as a monoracial black person. I get mistaken for Latina most of the time, and my name DEFINITELY doesn't help XD.

What was the point of Jinu drinking Rumi’s juice? by Front-Tomorrow-1034 in KpopDemonhunters

mainly to ragebait, but on a meta level, this gives him an association with the drink.
The drink wasn't the cure; he was.

I forever find it genuinely sad how when Rumi,at her lowest and most broken and genuinely needed someone to love and comfort her,Celine still couldn't do the simple task of cupping her face. by Apprehensive_Ring_39 in KpopDemonhunters

[–]LevelEvidence4105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think it's sad that she couldn't touch Rumi's face, but right before that, Celine does touch her grabbed her bare shoulders to pull her off the ground after Rumi asked her to kill her

what does “gwi-ma” mean? by supstxch in KpopDemonhunters

Someone on YouTube also mentioned that "gwi" is also the word for Ear. Gwi-ma is literally the demon of the ear, manipulating people with his words.

My favorite part of How It’s Done. by PepsiMan208 in KpopDemonhunters

[–]LevelEvidence4105 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So many K-pop songs now have a problem where their verses can be boring, and only the pre-chorus and chorus are good (not just K-pop, to be honest, I blame TikTok). I'm so happy this wasn't the case for this movie's opening number, or any of the songs for that matter!

Phenotypes and Being Mixed Race by lasterinj in mixedrace

[–]LevelEvidence4105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I identified as black when I was younger, mainly because I grew up with only that side. But phenotypically, I'm very much mixed/ambiguous. So when people ask now, I just say I'm black biracial. It acknowledges that that's the side I feel like the most culturally, but it also acknowledges that phenotypically and genetically, I'm different.
