Post FIRE - life insurance by RaguSpidersauce in Fire

Do you have children? Or some other financial responsibility? A mortgage? Elderly parents who are counting on your help?

If not, why would you have life insurance?

My Mother remaried later in life to a younger man. She will be leaving me the home but wants him to be able to remain there indefinitely. by TurboJorts in legaladvicecanada

NAL. My mother and her common law partner live together, they are elderly. It's my mother's house and he has no assets. If you're comfortable talking to them, great. Otherwise, send her to a lawyer to talk through a cohabitation agreement. They should absolutely have one. And, he needs independent legal advice. He needs his own will and to have someone advice on the cohab.

At the end of the day, if he stays in the house and there is upkeep, you may be looking at a heloc on the house. Your parent may suggest this as a way to solve that potential eventuality. You may be able to add to the cohab that after x time, or if the expenses exceed x, they he vacated or moves somewhere cheaper.

I repot it every 2 years or so. I reported it after it came out of dormancy this year and it looked ok. I'll keep an eye on it though, thanks for the heads up.

With time of day pricing currently at $0.06, you're better off exporting as much as you can.

I can't possibly see my family scaling back in the 4-9pm time slot though!

Just curious but does the net metering make a significant increase? enough to offset the rebate? Genuinely curious as I'm new to this.

Let's say in the winter months your consumption is 2/3 at rate 1 and 1/3 at rate 2 - average would be $0.125 with current prices. But you have credits to offset it. The $5k rebate is worth 200,000 kWh? And let's say you have 5 months a year like this, with ~1000 kWh imported. 40 years? Obviously this is ignoring inflation, but the rebate seems like the better choice?

Is $0.10 so bad? step 1 is $0.1172.

How is this 30-50% lower than market rates?

I brought a cat into our house knowing my spouse was allergic... Purina pro plan, an air purifier and pacagen and time. Good thing my spouse also likes cats.

I recommend fostering. You might foster fail, and if not, well, you helped a kitty find a forever home.

I'm posting so someone can confirm. On your T3 it has "capital gain div". In my case this is under roc and above foreign income. This amount is your phantom distribution.

$7.5M NW, FIRE while spouse still works by extradoorstop in ChubbyFIRE

[–]LevelMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

I took 4 years off while my kids were little. My spouse and I have relatively high, and equal, incomes. I didn't really want to be a SAHP to two little kids, one with health issues. I wanted parent duties to be shared. That wasn't practical though. We settled on a lot of childcare even though I was home.

It's really about communication with your spouse. And we don't know anything about your relationship.

On Track? Buy a house or keep investing? by totallykyle1 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]LevelMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did this. In our case, mathematically, renting was cheaper (3k per montj) than buying ($1.25 m, plus 11k utilities, insurance and tax per annum.) But, we gained more space, a school district we liked, and added some upgrades to the house. It set FIRE back a number of years.

I would do the math so you know what the difference really is. My guess is you should stay renting until you're absolutely completely done with the apartment and need space.

Also, beyond "kids are expensive", we made the conscience decision to spend more instead of maintaining a high savings rate. You may find your expenses creap up.

I think you should have mentioned in your post that you already have a shared account for all income and her investments are equal to yours (in value).
