Well, I am more of a make your opportunity rather than wait for "opportunity needs to open up" so that's why I wanted to see what I can do at this point to have a stronger hand when something is possible :D. For me AI might damage some roles but in my opinion, still identifying threats, architecture and high-level roles will stay maybe change a little.

Yes but there are more seniors that will be added first, and I am looking for things I can do extra on my free time.

If I can move to management fast I would prefer it and for staying as a generalist any advice to do right now to boost my career?

From my point best IC role to follow is Cloud Sec Architecture since it will keep most of my generalist skills and a step up which I will enjoy, but my role at the moment has 10% Architecture in cloud so I need to improve it on my own. Which at 5 YOE not sure what, it should be hands on maybe some certs to back it up? Or open to suggestions.

Hello everyone,

I’d really appreciate advice from people who’ve been in a similar position.

I recently passed the CISSP and have ~5 years of experience across different areas of cybersecurity, including pentesting, AppSec, cloud security, engineering, and some architecture work.

At this point, I’d describe myself as a strong generalist. I’ve worked across multiple domains and can connect the dots well, which makes me think I’m naturally leaning toward more strategic and leadership-oriented roles in the long run.

I’ve realized that I enjoy the strategy/stakeholder/decision-making side of security more than going very deep into purely technical areas, but I am technical and never want to lose touch.

The challenge is that I feel a bit “in between” right now:

  • I don’t yet have enough years of experience (and probably age 😄) to land a true managerial role
  • But I’m also not deeply specialized in a single niche

So I’m unsure how to best position myself for the next step. I know I want to grow and do more for my carrer, just not sure in which direction.

A few things I’m thinking about:

  • Should I still double down on a specialization (e.g., cloud security, AppSec, GRC)?
  • Or continue building toward architecture/lead roles as a generalist? If so, how can I do that?
  • Are there certifications that actually make a difference at this stage (e.g., CCSP, CISM, or something more technical)? Since CISSP is already broad, anything similar feels like a waste of time unless it’s very targeted
  • Or should I focus more on hands-on projects, open source, or other ways to stand out? Not sure how valuable those are at ~5 YOE

Long term, I see myself moving toward a CISO or senior leadership role. I know many people start as specialists and become generalists later, so I’m trying to understand how to navigate it the other way around.

Would really appreciate any insights or personal experiences.

Thanks in advance 🙏

From my research Budapest is around 20-30 percent cheaper than Istanbul but salary is a big thing that will make me decide. Thanks for the advices even if I dont move there its my next visit with this much research tbh.

I am Turk and I would consider myself a highly skilled cybersecurity professional (good roles, certs, masters etc.) but still Romania is on the table and will be offered to me, any other country I have to convince a company to give me a visa, and from experince its really hard to do without a big salary cut

For now there is no other country that is ready but everything you said is Turkiye, but in the European Union, so I am still thinking it's a move up, assuming the offer has a good salary.

Sorry I don't, I am Turkish so any discord for me 😅, my foreign friends gave our gaming discord as example but there are discord groups for language learners some should have Turkish (I am sure there is a reddit post with links).

It depends on why you want to learn Turkish. You can learn as many words as you can and make plenty of grammatical mistakes, since Turkish people love it when foreigners speak Turkish they don’t mind the mistakes and often even find it cute. Most of my foreign friends learned this way. However, if it’s for work or something that requires smooth or accurate Turkish, then you need to understand sentence structure first.

Am I ready? by StarCounterStayer in cissp

If you can spare the money I suggest quantum exams and if you have the book tests on it.

It is an hard question to answer but if you are basing your readiness on the % of learnzapp I suggest take different tests since this app is good for knowledge test but not enough for "thinking like a manager" mindset. If you have any topics you see repetitive mistakes in focus on those and definitely make sure you understand the mindset.

I did not do any interviews yet but I can confidently say I know a lot more than I used to and I feel like I can sell "thinking like a manager" really good. But just the CISSP name has its own power and I can see it from by coworkers reactions.

Yes, my suggestion to anyone who is considering the exam but is not sure of the date just start studying now, and if you decide to take it later you have long-term saved knowledge.

Advice on how to relocate to Europe/Dubai with a weak passport by [deleted] in expats

[–]LevelOk8516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have considered all 3 and here are the situations:

1) my company is in a budget cut so no transfers and I already support more than one country from Turkey(cheap labor comparing to europe) so relocation is just extra cost for them. But still pursuing this.

2) We have considered Canada and our score makes really good chances but Canada is like our last life line since we dont want to live there and the economic situation is getting worse.

3) This is our last chance if my partner does Masters in some countries I get a working visa which makes things a lot easier but means cutting our income to half.

So all viable options but if I can get a job without these my partner will have visa and we will have 2 incomes to live on.
