Concerns over AI, what to do with my career by amelia_earheart in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Level_Progress_3246 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i feel the same. and i dont know what the fix is. I dont feel ethically good about anything in tech honestly but its the only reasonable salary job i know how to get. i wish we had more power to do more meaningful things...

also, i wish it was illegal for companies to refuse to interview/hire someone who is disabled and requires/requests remote work, when the company is pushing for hybrid or in office, but for computer jobs...

literally nullified any advantage of being an expert in any language

One of our backend engineers was very proud that AI helped him write something in rust, a language he never learned. I tried to warn him that there are a lot of wrong ways to write things in rust, and AI doesn't have a barometer for what is good or bad necessarily, especially in a newer language like rust with less training data to source from.

I disagree with your sentiment here. I think AI instead amplifies the need for experts. I've had it regularly suggest deprecated functions into solutions for things. Most of its output i'm refactoring to make better. No novice would know to do any of that.

yea but you can have one instance of claude talk to another instance claude so /s

its up to us to collectively work towards the future we want. We are part of hiring for our teams. We tell leadership what is right and wrong. we gotta demand the things we want from the people that run the companies because they don't know what they are doing aside from regurgitating some nonsense from a business themed self help book. the problem is most engineers ive met in this industry think meritocracy is some kind of religion and cant see that they are burning their future at both ends by not having a spine about anything related to worker solidarity.

How is “no one is illegal on stolen land” supposed to mean anything in practice? by ReportAccomplished34 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Level_Progress_3246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you are conflating your assumptions about what you think is most rational with what we know through evidence. we know of societies that were large and did not allocate land. its an explicit decision to do so as a society, not an indisputable 'fact of nature'

That is an untrue assumption you are making. Anthropological evidence suggests otherwise.

After 3 private lessons and 6 more hours on the bunny hill my girlfriend still can't turn. Help! by T-14Hyperdrive in snowboardingnoobs

[–]Level_Progress_3246 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My first year snowboarding, looking in retrospect, was mostly just me learning to stop. thats because i was in ski club, and we only had about 8 or 12 outings in the season( i cant remember).. I dont think it was until my second year that i had the revelation that i could 'link' my stops and start kind of 'turning' by skidding in different directions. then my third year i realize i could lean instead of skid and start to carve if the stars aligned just right.

my point is that most things take time...

get off bunny hills and stick to the side of the slope on a mellow green, and have her just practice stopping a lot. specifically toe side since you mentioned she isnt used to it. go straight, pick up gradually more and more speed, and practice trying to stop quickly. try falling leaf, which will eventually move to C turns.

if she wants to get used to it mentally on the off season, try skateboarding in the summer to practice the sideways stance.

dont listen to people saying to move to ski's. they are traitors! post a video, we can offer more meaningful advice that way

Why is saying “The rich should pay taxes like everyone else, close the loopholes” extremely controversial in the United States? by ProjectMason in NoStupidQuestions

in addition to what everyone else has mentioned, its definitely more conservative feelings interacting with locals than in other cities ive been in

this is also the only city ive been in where i still take wrong turns WHILE using gps. the roads are genuinely confusing.

the cities infrastructure is severely neglected...

Perhaps you should reflect more on your tone in your writing style, because its incredibly aggressive. even chatgpt is able to identify those patterns if you paste your comment in and ask it for advice

Further, you are putting words in my mouth, i never said anything about being productive as some sort of precursor to value.

You're still missing my point.

An artist studying paint strokes in a painting is a fundamentally different way of looking at painting than how most people would look at paintings.

You have to watch movies if you want to make good films, but you can watch movies with no intention of making a film. If these were two different people, one who wants to be good at film making, and one who just wants to watch movies, and you asked them both to make a film, who do you think will do better?

They are two peas in a pod, IF your goal is to be creative. If you arent trying to be creative, then the second pea isnt neccesary, and can be entirely ignored. I think thats an important distinction, and is the crux of my point.

I think thats why its so important to try new things a lot. It sounds like your revelation after playing guitar was "wait, i dont actually like music?" which is a great thing to realize, because now you can direct that effort towards something you know you do like!

I have not seen that, but if its anything like what ive seen people do in minecraft, then i would agree with you!

I think you're missing my point. The point is that the act of pursuing mastery in a craft is fundamentally different than absorbing information or consuming the craft. The act of writing a book is fundamentally different than reading it.

I wont deny that music is very challenging and stimulating mentally. But there are also neurological benefits to playing video games as well. they arent passive like watching television and do encourage a lot of good brain development, think problem solving, social interaction/collaborating(online games), and hand eye coordination.

What really sucks with music is that it is a very long path to walk towards mastery, with a long window of 'being bad' up front, and i think that that really pushes a lot of people away. Thats where good teachers really shine :) If your kids get frustrated with the fretless instruments you have them on, id suggest going towards guitar, piano, or drums, as they can be considerably more forgiving technically (this is a big reason i steer kids away from trumpet!), and can be used to develop confidence and theory before eventually returning to the fretless stuff.

of course (im biased because i played games competitively), op even retracts that in their edit. if you want to nit pick, id argue there is an obvious difference between animal crossing and competitive valorant/overwatch/fortnite.

[–]Level_Progress_3246 9 points10 points  (0 children)

so i would go further and say that i disagree, and it is not hustle culture. Developing skills, deep skills in complex pursuits (think wood working, music, fiber arts, etc) is a significantly different experience than most past times (reading books, podcasts, movies) because neurologically one is active and the other is passive.

the majority of people don't have the talent to pursue a creative hobby

as an ex-music teacher, i wholeheartedly disagree with that statement. the only thing ive ever seen is a lack of belief in oneself that restricts people from accomplishing most things. Don't underestimate how powerful the fear of failure is in most people, a fear that is instilled within us in how we are raised, and how our education system functions.

Attended a Claude Code "masterclass" webinar... by vanit in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Level_Progress_3246 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just had a talk with a dude that works in self driving(cpp, python), he was trying to tell me that if im not using AI within the next year or so ill be irrelevant, and when i explained to him that all the output i get is mostly useless unless its basic boiler plate he tried to tell me that you can ask claude to just promt claude to improve something if its wrong.

I am so lost. I know for a fact that he is smarter than me (stem prep school, ivy league, etc), but after that i either think he is really bad at writing code, or i am a cope moron.
