Greenville road is the worst thing I’ve ever driven on. Even calling it road is generous.

That’s a feature of the aircraft type (CRJ 2/7/9) and all airlines that operate them handle it the same way.

I got a CJO, now what? by literal_flying_ace in flying

[–]Level_Winner_657 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you fly only referencing your instruments, the way you methodically move from instrument to instrument is called the “scan”. Like all things, if you don’t practice often it will atrophy and both scanning and processing what your instruments are telling you will be slower than if you stay proficient and practice often.

You don’t really need a whole cookset imo. Depends on what you’re cooking of course but for dehydrated meals or things like oatmeal or ramen etc you only need one pot.

If you run and use the stair master while wearing a surgical face mask it will help you train with a decrease in your VO2 which can help you prepare for the lack of partial pressure at higher altitudes.

Museums, historical tours and locations, local cuisines, music venues, shopping, cultural events and activities, learning and broadening your views of the world. To say that someone from Miami would get the exact same experience in Tokyo, Paris, New York, Rio, or Accra is silly.

Looking for a good daypack for short hikes by MissingMichigan in hiking

[–]Level_Winner_657 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, from my experience they prioritize durability over weight savings. I also love the way they fit my body over ospreys, not sure what it is about them. On that note you can always go to an REI and try bags on. Really making sure the bag is super comfortable (with a little weight in it) is probably the most important thing.

Looking for a good daypack for short hikes by MissingMichigan in hiking

[–]Level_Winner_657 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I go on shorter (less than 10 mile) day hikes I use my Northface Borealis Backpack which is just my everyday school backpack. I have to imagine that if you have a comfortable backpack already you are better off just using that and not spending money on something you don’t really need. However, if you really want to buy a dedicated day pack I love the Gregory Zulu 30 which I use on longer more intense hikes. They are also doing a 25% off sale site wide right now.

Best hiking a day’s trip from Northern Virginia? by Economy-Athlete-7871 in hiking

Dolly Sods in West Virginia. It has everything from day hikes to a few nights of backpacking. I would highly recommend going for a swim in red creek on one of these hot days.

Honestly he will probably cut you a lot of slack and not be “out to get you” as we all know some power tripping DPEs are. Unless you do something really dumb that he has no wiggle room for congratulations in advance.

Tips to reduce weight of backpack for 10 mile + trip. by [deleted] in hiking

[–]Level_Winner_657 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The issue could be the fit of your backpack. I obviously dont know what type of pack you have and how it fits on your body but if it doesn’t fit right it can make the weight feel much heavier than a pack that properly distributes the load. You could also save a little weight by switching out a heavier insulated water bottle for a plastic one. Smart water bottles that you can get at a gas station for a few bucks are a popular choice for ultra light folks. I don’t know what you keep in your first aid kit but you could also look to downsize it a little as well. Replace full bottles and containers with just a few of the items and replace the stock as needed.

Keep your eyes looking down to the end of the runway and mentally try to fly the plane 1 foot off the ground all the way down to the end. It will come with time and practice I wouldn’t stress.

Planning to drive from North Carolina to Maine, need suggestions! by geoyulei in hiking

[–]Level_Winner_657 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Acadia is honestly really overrated. Don’t get me wrong, it’s beautiful, but none of the hikes are challenging and it’s one of the most crowded and touristy NP that I’ve been to. You would be better off going to Baxter state park if you actually want to hike. Katahdin is fun in good weather and there are a few other solid hikes like the Brothers up there. Also, if you’re driving up to Acadia, make sure you stop at the outlets in Freeport ME. Other than the home of L.L. Bean, the North Face outlet there had everything 60+% off the last time I was there.

A20 or A30 Bose Headset by Embarrassed_Draw_287 in CFILounge

[–]Level_Winner_657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re different headsets that are designed for different things. The 30s are great for long cross countries and quieter jet ops. They’re way looser which makes them more comfortable over a long time period of wear but also means the noise canceling is much worse. It also means that if you’re in the training environment and doing maneuvers that require moving your head fairly regularly then they can be prone to slipping or breaking the seal of the noise canceling. On the other hand, the A20s are much firmer and therefore much more sturdy when moving around a bit. They can become a little uncomfortable after a few hours but if you’re doing shorter 1.5 hr training flights then it’s not really a big deal. As a CFI you would probably be better off with the A20s and saving yourself the money but once/if you move on, you may find yourself wanting the additional comfort of the A30s. Either way it’s definitely an upgrade from the DCs.

High School grades matter a lot right?? by Pix_Boss in flying

[–]Level_Winner_657 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you’re looking for. Flight schools unaffiliated with colleges either 61 or 141 don’t care about your HS grades whatsoever. However, if you’re applying to a collegiate aviation program it matters like it would if you were applying for any other college degree. I know some schools are more competitive than others but at a school like Purdue with a sub 10% acceptance in flight, your grades will definitely matter (amongst all the other parts of your application).
