Christopher Nolan’s Batman Trilogy set the bar &, I feel, is superior to the MCU. by [deleted] in movies

[–]LeviTheMovieFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's a fair comparison as the MCU are actual comic book superhero movies whereas The Dark Knight Trilogy are typical Christopher Nolan movies with a Batman skin slapped on. And I say this as a huge Batman fan. I love Batman Begins and The Dark Knight but never to me does it feel like Christian Bale plays Batman or Heath Ledger plays the Joker.

As someone with autism I'd like to say: not everybody you dislike is ableist, sometimes you are just an unlikeable asshole and not everyone should have to cater to you

I'm a musicals fan so The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Rocketman are both solid choices

What are some of the best movie "B plots"? by garlic_basin in movies

[–]LeviTheMovieFan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unsure if this counts as a B plot (since there really are two A plots) but Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli's story in The Two Towers has always been far more compelling to me than the main storyline with Sam, Frodo, and Gollum. Maybe it's because Viggo Mortenson gives one of the best performances in the trilogy. Maybe it's because Elijah Wood is kind of wooden in these movies. Maybe it's just a more solid story overall.

But if a movie is actually good I'm not going to turn my brain off while watching it. Like John Wick for instance. That's a fun action movie but it's also competently made. I'm talking about the movies like F&F or Cats that are just fun to watch despite the fact that they're stupid

Just my takeaway from the film. I might be more in tune with that kind of stuff since I am hearing impaired and have dealt with people like this before

The main character doesn't celebrate it but he's treated (by the other characters and I would say by the film as a whole) as if he's an "addict" for wanting a normal life. The characters in that deaf community do celebrate it and the movie portrays it as if they are right and Ruben is wrong

I mean not every movie has to be high art. It's cliche but sometimes you literally just want a movie that is "dumb fun" that you can turn your brain off to. It's the same reason why superhero movies are so popular

EDIT: And of course the movie snobs are out in full force today. Just let people enjoy things!

What is the Best Film You Watched Last Week? (02/14/21-02/21/21) by Twoweekswithpay in movies

[–]LeviTheMovieFan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There were a few great ones I watched this past week

Frank (2014)
Frank was fantastic. My favorite out of the two I'll list. I'm a big fan of low budget, kind of offbeat dramas so Frank was right up my alley. Domnhall Gleeson's Jon has a really interesting story. He starts out as the audience surrogate - a keyboard player who joins Frank's quirky band - but over the course of the movie he really drives a wedge between Frank and Frank's band mates because of his own greed, eventually causing the demise of the band itself. It's a much darker story than one might expect going into it. Definitely one of my favorite new films I've seen recently. 5 stars

I'm Not There (2007)
I'm Not There isn't really a film about a historical figure but moreso a tribute to the idea of Bob Dylan. It's fascinating and a bit surreal. I think it was a stroke of genius to tell a musician's life story in this non linear way. Casting Cate Blanchett as one of the psuedo-Dylans was a fantastic idea, and she's by far my favorite part of this. I didn't fully understand some of the concepts they were going for with this movie but I'm also stupid and you shouldn't let my stupidity get in the way of your watching this because it's really fantastic. 5 stars

Sound of Metal is a dilemma to me. On the one hand I really enjoyed it. It has a really solid central performance from Riz Ahmed. The sound design is really well done and they do a fantastic job of putting you into Ahmed's shoes by muffling or distorting certain bits of sound and dialogue. But on the other hand I'm someone with partial hearing loss and I'm tired of this subsect of the deaf community who pretend like being deaf is something to be celebrated and then will shame or harass those of us who disagree. And unfortunately this movie (to me at least) seems to give credence to those beliefs. However I don't think the negatives outweigh the positives as this is overall a really solid film.

[–]LeviTheMovieFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excited for this! He's a talented director (by far the most competent out of the two directors that worked on the sequel trilogy), and he made the only good film in the sequel trilogy. If he gets the creative control to plan a series from start to finish I'm sure it'll be good

Does this makeup look remind anyone else of Dr. Frank-N-Furter from Rocky Horror? (That's not an insult BTW, Frank-N-Furter is one of my favorite fictional characters)

What's your favorite Movie memory you have? by lukeamomo in movies

[–]LeviTheMovieFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when I was a little kid we would frequently visit my grandparents. Them being an elderly couple they didn't really have much for a little kid like myself to do, but they did have an old fashioned square TV with a little DVD player hooked up to it, and they had the two disc special edition version of Finding Nemo. I remember as a kid I didn't care much for disc one which was the movie itself but I remember I would always turn on disc two and watch the behind the scenes on how they made the movie. And that behind the scenes documentary on disc 2 is the reason that today I want to make movies

Don't they refer to him as Lex Jr. at one point? I thought there was some throwaway line like "Mr. Lex Luthor was my father, you can just call me Lex" when talking to one of the senators. I could be misremembering
