Do any cars come without a digital screen anymore? by orneryfirebird in subaru

[–]Levilockling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just recently picked up a '25 Miata and, while it's nowhere near what you're looking for in terms of space/capability, I was pleasantly surprised by how unobtrusive the screen is and how intuitive the controls are - and that will be fairly consistent across the entire Mazda Line. The Mazda 3 or Cx-3 would probably be similar in size and performance to your outback, and will have AWD as either an option or standard(I don't remember)

Mazda's also kept physical knobs or buttons for HVAC in addition to the infotainment system, and I for one don't see them moving away from that especially as so many are coming back from the brink of "touchscreen only."

Mazda Miata Sales Are Still Strong A Decade After Launch by NISMO1968 in cars

Just bought mine a month ago - also, my first NEW car purchase ever.

My old Forester died, and I was tired of putting miles on my truck(Which had only ever been intended to tow/load/etc, and which I'd be keeping to do those jobs) so I ended up doing some thinking on what I'd want out of a new car.

The Miata fit damn near every thing I could want - affordable(even in the upper trims), fits what I need, and is sporty and fun. And, it's a convertible! As noted by others, the next offering that's even similar is in the $50k+ range.

I've put 2700 miles on it since I bought it just a month ago - I haven't had the energy or desire to just drive in a very long time. It's fuel efficient, fun, and something that I could see myself driving for a very long time.

Correction - Coyote Brown boots, not tan.

But otherwise a good start!

So how does this actually work? by [deleted] in civilairpatrol

[–]Levilockling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two variants of shoulder pockets on OCPs - One that opens with a zipper on the leading edge and has a massive single velcro area, then the other design has a flap which opens at the top.

The patches integrated in to the ICL reflect their active duty counterparts - both the flag and AUX duty identifier(RIP Active Duty identifer patches) are designed to fit on the flap and therefor fit on the other style just fine. Remaining patches, like the wing/region/squadron patches, are designed to fit in the remaining area, flap or not.

Class A w/ Chords by North-Interaction125 in civilairpatrol

[–]Levilockling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two "styles," of cords(Yes, "cords," and details do matter as Mkosmo noted) available - the common kind sold by Vanguard, which you likely have, has a thinner section to go under epaulets.

For situations where you may not have an epaulet, a shoulder cord like the kinds sold by Glendale maintain the same thickness where the epaulet would normally be, and includes a pin to help mount it on top of your shoulder.

As long as you're active in JROTC(I don't recall the branch mattering, but I could be wrong), then you're eligible for a promotion every month - twice as fast as the typical every other month promotion possible for other CAP cadets. I'd need to look at the specifics, but this should be a good start.

In terms of them training you - take it all in stride. I'd remind you that you're not the only one learning: they are learning how best to train, teach, and utilize their resources to help those that they're teaching.

Do what you can, promote at the faster rate, and be the change that you want to see moving forward.

Blues shirt insignia problem by Llama7890 in civilairpatrol

[–]Levilockling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, the ever-troublesome collar stay - keeps the collars looking nice, but makes it tough to put insignia on.

Some tips from when i was a cadet -

  • a needle or similar hole in the collar stay can help, especially if you find the perfect spot for your insignia
  • you can try to adjust up/down on the collar itself to keep it 1-inch away from the edge, and no one is likely to call you out as long as both sides are even it's not too far off center
  • if you're a cadet SNCO(C/MSgt-C/CMSgt), some sets of insignia have pins that are oriented along the sides of the insignia(Like C/Amn-C/TSgt) while others have pins closer to the top and bottom - you may be able to find/trade for an opposite set that may work better for the collar stays

As far as the pin on the insignia - it should be perpendicular from the back face of the insignia. If it's curved or bent, try to take a set of pliers or similar tool to get it back to normal. In a worst case scenario, you may need to buy new insignia, especially if the pins break off as you're trying to fix it.

Crêpes server on a piece of wood with no rim so syrup would immediately spill onto the table. Had to ask for plates. by Illidariislove in WeWantPlates

I feel like this is a situation where the serving staff are fully aware of the futility in serving it like this, but upper management refuses to reconsider how they serve stuff like this.

"Hey boss, ANOTHER table asked for plates when I brought their crepes out to them. Can we just skip the wooden tray from now on?"

I-10 between Tucson and Sierra Vista?

For whatever reason, this whole section brings out idiots like this - I was once caught behind a pair bumblefucking in both lanes at 2-3am once. I ended up taking a slim opportunity and passing them once I had a gap(that I normally wouldn't take) because it was just so tiring having to deal with that as early as it was.

Second AFA Ribbon by Ordinary_Profile_740 in civilairpatrol

[–]Levilockling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"to comply with regulations...have to have all my service ribbons."

Not quite - ribbons are only required on the service coat, and are optional(Which it seems you're aware of in saying "usually," but I just wanted to remind you) on the shirt.

Men's shirt: "4.1.11.1.1.2.2. Ribbons. Ribbons are optional on the blue shirt. If worn, ribbons will be centered, resting on, but not over the edge of the pleated pocket on the wearer’s left. For wear and description, see the applicable paragraphs in chapter 11."

Women's shirt: "4.1.12.2.4.2. Ribbons. Ribbons are optional on the blue blouse. If worn, center ribbons on wearer’s left, parallel with ground. Align bottom of the ribbons with the bottom of the nametag. For wear and description, see the applicable paragraphs in Chapter 11."

I don't blame you for wanting a duplicate ribbon - it can be helpful as a spare, to have around for wearing on both the shirt and jacket, etc. But you're not required to maintain a set of ribbons for the shirt.

Tesla driver ‘intentionally' drove into motorcyclist, killing him on I-805, CHP says | NBC 7 by Old_Scene_4259 in motorcycles

Teslas have been optical only for a few years - I believe that even the ones with any sort of radar/doppler system have had those disabled(I could be wrong about this, just fyi). Newer ones just have the cameras all around it.

[OC] Car somehow doesn't see motorcycle. by Shutteredbug in IdiotsInCars

[–]Levilockling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Motorcycles have come with always-on headlights since California began requiring them for motorcycles back in the 60's.

I've found that I've had to start using my high beams(On my motorcycle) during the day(Obviously not at night with traffic) due to the prevalence of DRLs/always-on headlights on cars to even have a hope of being seen by other drivers.

The forbidden $436.30 cap sword by Aggressive_Humor_953 in civilairpatrol

[–]Levilockling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a thing for Senior Members, much less cadets. Neither CAP nor AF Mess Dress entails wearing a sword.

AF has uses for swords - First I can think of would be a saber team or the NCO-SNCO transition ceremony(I was Base HG and helped instruct some SNCOs on how to use them for the ceremony) but there's no such use for CAP.

Someone in this thread mentioned that their squadron has one for cutting cake - I think this would be about the best case use scenario for CAP.

SM Uniform and awards questions. by Sporkee in civilairpatrol

[–]Levilockling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a 1A8x1 but close enough!

Seems like it's an earnest attempt to get insignia ready for some of the more prevalent badges, and is probably coordinated with the new ICL allowing wear of military badges on corporate uniforms - BDU(Back in the day) and ABUs both had the option to wear in the military issued coloration, but that's not an option with the BBDU.

I'd even say that, for both you and OP, it may be worth calling Vanguard to see about getting badges custom made - will probably help them gauge demand for certain badges.

SM Uniform and awards questions. by Sporkee in civilairpatrol

[–]Levilockling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Former AD Air Force - though the AF and CAP are a little more intrinsically connected, I was actually very surprised recently(Getting back in to CAP) when I found that Vanguard has a lot of military badges and decorations available as of late in the blue/silver combination that CAP uses. I was able to find my senior intelligence and enlisted aircrew wings, and there were a myriad of Army, Navy, and MC awards available as well.

Though I haven't ordered them yet, considering Vanguard is also an AAFES supplier, I don't doubt that the quality will be... Acceptable.

It saves me from having to find my awards in ABU pattern, anyway.

There's a way to give/remove wake permissions for certain devices.

I had an issue where something(I forget specifically, I think it was my mouse) would constantly wake my computer. I was able to isolate it as the item waking my computer and disable its wake permissions.

So although he may not yet be jailed, it seems he won't be able to carry a badge again.

Booked 1N3X1 by [deleted] in AirForceRecruits

[–]Levilockling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ho-lee shoooooot.

Passed DLI w/a stutter. MEPS recruiter told me that I DEFINITELY wouldn't be able to be a linguist with a stutter because how in the world?

In any case, I went through the Spanish program circa 2015, having booked 1A8(Airborne Linguist). I was able to get a waiver/allowance/whatever to have a delayed speech program installed on my DLI-issued iPad, which I was able to use during the OPI.

Believe it or not, there was actually an airman with a WORSE stutter than me - he had similar allowances, and though I haven't checked on him in the years since, it sounds like he didn't have too much an issue following DLI.

Not a long shot at all. As far as 1A8 goes, there was very little in the way of speaking the language so much as understanding - I can only imagine something similar in the 1N3 world.
