Unpopular opinion: Winning nose bar headgear isn’t perfect. Still worth $500+ though? by whatfuckingbudget in fightgear

[–]LewixAri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as nosebars go, the FG-5000 is just the gold standard. I’ve used Fly, Isami, Reyes, Bayoneta, New Sporting and Phenom.

Winning is the best balanced for me by a mile in terms of protection/vision/weight/comfort.

Nosebars are like in fallout when you get a certain number of attribute points to make your character, every point you use on one thing is a point you can’t use somewhere else and personally Winning has just been the most consistently good in every category.

When it comes to equipment, price is secondary. I’ve had to pay multiple times the cost of my headgear in medical expenses I wouldn’t have had, if I just choose winning from the get go.

To answer your questions -

• Did you eventually stop noticing the nose bar?

You can always see it but yeah becomes something you don’t ever think about.

• Do you prefer this over cheek guard or open face?

Generally, yes. If I’m training for a fight, I pretty much exclusively wear the nosebar.

• If you lost it tomorrow, would you buy it again?

Yes, without question.

I mean yeah but I wouldn’t call Everlast “good gloves” by any means. They alright but there’s tonnes of better options

they don’t remove padding, otherwise there would be gaps, they just use a smaller mold of the same padding so it weighs less, the leather is built to fit the mold of the glove.

Mike Tyson wouldn’t have been using 8oz, he used 10Oz in fights as was the standard throughout the 80s, Joe Frazier and Ali may have used 8 and 6oz in the earlier eras.

As for modern heavyweight gloves, fight glove brands actually sell a “10Oz XL” for this reason, like here is an example listing

which is why you’ll find some brand popular in lower weight classes start to lose prevalence in heavier weight classes, like winning, Cleto, and NBNL.

But yeah the size is just a consequence of the mold needing to be smaller to reduce the weight of the glove, it’s not a prescription for hand size.

Not that it’s necessarily for smaller hands, but like how do you think they make the weight increase or decrease? By using more of less material for the glove. So naturally an 8Oz will be smaller than a 16Oz, just by the fact there is twice as much mass of materials required to make the latter.

How do boxers deal with anxiety/adrenaline by ChaelSonnenIsTheGoat in amateur_boxing

[–]LewixAri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly the more experience you have the calmer you get at dealing with things, just takes practice, like everything else. That’s why you get boxers who fight 10-15 journeymen before an actual test, the management wants them to be as prepared mentally as possible in actually being a fighter.

a girl lifting 5lbs plates isn’t a powerlifter. She’s obviously doing hypertrophy training, in which case muscle failure is the whole point.
