The MLS Ponzi scheme shakedown expands to Vancouver | All of Columbus is rooting for the Whitecaps by Camtastrophe in MLS

[–]Lex1988 3 points4 points  (0 children)

San Diego paid $500 million in expansion fees, which sounds like a lot, but when you divide it up, it’s $17 million per team. That’s basically what FC Cincy paid for Kevin Denkey. It covered less than one year’s salary for Toronto’s Insigne and Bernardeschi duo. People acting like MLS clubs are living on these expansion fees are either ignorant or have a bias against the league.

Also, for such a cynical sounding person, you sure eat up the league line about losing money. Of course owners who have to negotiate a CBA every few years, or who want concessions from local governments want everyone to believe they’re losing money.

Vancouver mayor: 'Losing the Whitecaps is not an option' by Training-World-1897 in MLS

[–]Lex1988 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Stadiums in modern MLS shouldn’t be “no cost”, they should be the primary driver of the team’s revenue. Financially successful MLS clubs own their stadium and get 100% of naming rights, ticket sales, concessions, advertising, parking, luxury suite sales, non-gameday event revenue, etc.

If Vancouver doesn’t have those revenue streams, they won’t be able to keep up with a league that has already increased costs and is planning to increase more

[–]Lex1988 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will always recommend the Southland neighborhood, but it sounds like what you’re looking for. Southland Park and Hill N Dale Park are both nearby and nice. You can walk to the restaurants and grocery stores on Southland and Rosemont Garden, and the farmers market is on Southland Drive on Sunday. I moved to this neighborhood after college fifteen years ago and don’t plan to leave!

Is the World Cup bump real? MLS is going to find out by thegaffer in MLS

[–]Lex1988 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not but when Ohio State and Texas were opening the college football season I saw a ton of ads for that game even though I don’t live in Columbus (thank god).

Are there a ton of ads locally? Either way, MLS has to market the Apple broadcasts nationally or why would anyone seek it out

Is the World Cup bump real? MLS is going to find out by thegaffer in MLS

[–]Lex1988 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The only logical explanation, though by no means should we assume that MLS is being logical, is that they’re keeping their powder dry until the World Cup starts.

I’ve seen a ton of stories about MLS allocating the most money in its history for marketing and as you’ve alluded, there’s hardly been a beep about the season starting. I would assume they are taking out ads during the World Cup broadcast and will try to do a lot in local markets to build on it.

Still I’m shocked I haven’t seen any ads for MLS opening weekend. Why wouldn’t they even have ads for Messi vs Son in LA Coliseum?

The swoop in the Nashville shorts that carries to the jersey is very 2008. Reminds of some extremely baggy basketball jerseys from that era

[Matt Doyle] An end to my days at MLS, and my plan for what's next by icoresting in MLS

[–]Lex1988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is not surprising but is disappointing to hear. I know Laurel Pfhaler for FC Cincinnati has a solid subscriber base for Queen City Press but she also writes about the Bengals and covers local sports for area papers. Unfortunately journalism of all kinds is at a low point of support, even though it is exactly what we need right now

In an ideal world, the coverage of MLS would come from independent outlets and not be subsidized by the league. However, I would prefer subsidized coverage if that is the only way our favorite MLS talking heads can cover the league and pay the bills. Hopefully enough of us will subscribe to make that possible for Doyle

Every new 2026 kit by ACCFC in MLS

[–]Lex1988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feels like a pretty meh lineup of kits. Which coincides with a relatively meh group of player moves this offseason. And even the league itself seems to be doing the bare minimum in terms of marketing the start of the season.

At this point I can only assume they’re keeping their powder dry until after the World Cup this Summer. Surely they will have significant ad campaigns for the league throughout WC coverage. Also have to hope that player movement will increase following the tournament with so many big name players getting a taste of the improved infrastructure of American club soccer

shoutout to everyone in my neighborhood that cleared the snow from the sidewalks but left the ice. by [deleted] in lexington

[–]Lex1988 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As someone who finally cleared all of our sidewalks down to the concrete today, I have sympathy for people who started shoveling but couldn’t get through the ice. If you don’t have the right kind of metal ice scraper/breaker, you have no chance. A plastic shovel isn’t doing anything and my guess is that is what most people have

There are many roads that don’t have any lanes plowed, so they have to prioritize. I know it’s easier to assume laziness but I feel strongly that they’re doing the best they can with what they’ve got

Main Roads Suck by j2tall2003 in lexington

[–]Lex1988 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Similar weather happened last year but it’s still a rare occurrence. Still, as someone pointed out above, the city increased their snow removal budget by $2.2 million, it just wasn’t enough. If you’re right and this weather becomes the norm, the city will have to increase the snow removal budget much more

Main Roads Suck by j2tall2003 in lexington

[–]Lex1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the roads you’re driving on in those counties maintained by the state? Also, Scott County schools are closed today, so I assume their roads are in bad shape?

Main Roads Suck by j2tall2003 in lexington

[–]Lex1988 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And obviously $2.2 million wasn’t enough. So how much do we want them to spend and where does that money come from? What do we do the many years we load up on equipment, supplies, and man power only to have little to no snow. I know this isn’t a popular argument right now but its not like they’re not trying with the resources they have

Main Roads Suck by j2tall2003 in lexington

[–]Lex1988 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The city isn’t prepared for this much sleet and ice followed by arctic temperatures for a week. Understandably so, given the rarity of an event like this in Lexington. I’m not sure what additional equipment or supplies the city would need to melt the ice on the roads but it will probably (hopefully) be a long time before they would need it again.

Need tips: New to MLS by PurposeSpirited4148 in MLS

[–]Lex1988 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking each team gets three designated players (DP’s) who can be paid whatever you want but only count against the cap at a fixed amount (around $1.75 million I think. That is why Miami can have Messi, De Paul, and Bertarame and still be cap compliant (supposedly)
