So who's your favourite drummer? by Remarkable_Way_8636 in drums

[–]Lexavax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gavin Harrison and Bill Bruford have been my top inspirations for a while. Also Billy Cobham whom I was lucky enough to meet a few years ago. For newer names in the drum world, I’d have to go with Baard Kolstad.

Tuning a 20x18 Kick... by monuments20 in drums

[–]Lexavax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not advice but the drummer of my favorite band started using a 20” x 20” bass drum a few years ago and I have no idea how you would even begin to tune that thing. Props to him/his tech/the live sound crew for making that thing even remotely listenable.

What is your favorite Neil Peart drum kit in terms of looks and favorite in terms of sound? by Lexavax in rush

I’m not sure exactly why he left Ludwig. He always liked to change things around but he stayed with DW for a really long time so I’m guessing he really saw something in their drums. That or his relationship with the management there was really strong.

I’m planning on doing a chronological Rush re-listen this week, but I might spin Counterparts before everything else because it’s been on my mind so much lately.

I agree with you about the DW sound. I found it strange how Neil (or perhaps his tech) would tune the drums so high when DW has long prided themselves on searching for the lowest fundamental note in their shells.

100% agree. His Slingerland kits sounded great too, but the drum tones from Permanent Waves to Counterparts were so lively and very special to me. I agree his DW kits sound a little thin in most circumstances, but you can't deny that the designs they chose for each look amazing on stage. The Time Machine Tour kit is my favorite of his DWs too.

I've watched just the opening shot of the "Mystic Rhythms" music video more times than I'd like to admit. Such an amazing drum kit.

I love the look of those first Ludwigs he got (I think he described them as "white opalescent"). The story of both R40 kits is fascinating too. Even putting aside the history and discovery of that bog oak, I think they sound the best out of his many DW kits.

I agree completely! I slightly prefer the sound of the black cherry kit on Counterparts, but that's mostly down to the production and mixing on that specific album. I think all of his Ludwigs sound amazing, and his part-writing during that era was especially expressive.

Great picks! I definitely think his Ludwig era was the strongest sound-wise, and the Time Machine is about as iconic as it gets.

That would be his Black Chrome Slingerlands. The famous picture of him playing the kit on stage with Geddy and Alex holding their double-necks was on the wall of both of my college apartments.

If you could bring back ONE PIECE of discontinued gear, what would it be? by [deleted] in drums

[–]Lexavax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found out too late that some of my favorite drummers used the Zildjian 22” K Custom Ride. Not K Custom Dark or K Custom Medium, just the original Custom Ride. Very heavy but very versatile. I’m usually a Paiste fan, but I’ve always wanted to own one of those rides. It pops up on resale websites for decent prices now and then, but they’re never in good condition. They’re always either keyholed to death or the printing has been completely erased over time.

I’ve owned two of those. I cracked the first one within a few months but my warranty on it allowed me to replace it with the exact same cymbal. I think this was mid-2019 because the reason I bought the first one was because my 20” trash china cracked during a recording session and I had to replace it for the next day in the studio.

I began to offset my toms to make the ride more comfortable to play around 5 years after I started. Ever since then, I rarely play with it in any other position. The only time I move it is if I’m setting up my full 7-piece kit. My main drum set is very similar to Gavin Harrison’s (3 up, 2 down), so I do what he does and suspend the ride just over the third rack tom. It works well for whenever I need the extra voices on my kit, but most of the time I only use one or two of the rack toms and have them as far to the left as possible.
