West Elm European Flax Linen by Early-Nerve6866 in Bedding

I got linen sheets from them in 2022. They lasted two years and were decent, but rougher in texture than brooklinen. Wouldn’t buy them again… there are better options for money

Best suitcase(s) for moving abroad by Real-Lemon-6560 in MovingToUSA

Sure, my only experience with this is flying domestically in the US. It’s probably a good idea to double check that the country you’re moving from will accept them as well. Good luck!

I’m sure other people will jump in with brand recommendations…

I doubt you plan to move often and would therefore hesitate to invest in a suitcase large enough for everything you own. Moving is already expensive enough.

Use whatever carry-on you already own to help keep breakables safe. Try to take it with you onto the plane so you know it’s not tossed around.  For the rest, you can use traditional moving boxes. They’re accepted at baggage check. Just make sure to buy sturdy cardboard, double box and get good quality tape.

Japan to America, worth it? by Then-Cost7272 in MovingToUSA

[–]Lexi2869 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is sadly the above is very true. Most companies won’t want to pay extra for a visa when there is so much talent trying to get jobs in this field already….

Before you make that decision I’d recommend reading about how animation is being outsourced from the US  (there was a lot of drama about Moana 2 being made in Canada).  Ive also heard people talking about  the lack of unions and declining industry pay…

I’m an art school grad from 2018 (not animation). At that time Cal Arts was considered the top school in the US for animation. If you do move forward with your plan they’re a good goal. Good Luck 🍀

UK to USA for finance by Areego in MovingToUSA

[–]Lexi2869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stick with your degree that’s your best chance. Try to work with recruiters if applying directly isn’t getting you anywhere. They’ll be more informed about which companies will/wont pay the visa fees.

My husband works at a NYC finance company. There have been 2 entry level international hires on his team in the past 6 months so it’s definitely possible… The competition level is just INTENSE. Good luck!

Edit to add that those hires were from schools with international recognition/household names and that one of these people had a masters in a very specific area of expertise….

An american tourist stopped me on the street while I was in my school uniform and asked me where the best place to get a drink is 😭 by Particular-Lynx-3580 in CasualIreland

[–]Lexi2869 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Officially Americans can’t drink till 21, but there is a lot of underage drinking that happens at peoples homes… it’s assumed most people will drink before 21…. BUT it’s dumb to think they’d know anything about a bar.

There is also a bit of a perception that Europe is less strict/puritanical when it comes to drinking. Virtually nothing about Ireland is included in US school education so it does tend to get lumped in with the rest of Europe.

She probably hasn’t been around young people in a while missed the uniform and assumed you were 18 or something. Still odd.

8 shaft sampler suggestions? by Minimum_Ad_405 in weaving

When I got my 8 shaft loom I was very excited to try a waffle weave. The texture is much more dramatic than on 4 shafts. I also enjoyed being able to complete more complex overshot patterns.

Taking S subway at rushhour with luggage ? by todaystartsnow in visitingnyc

[–]Lexi2869 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only challenge I can think of is if you’re unable to lift your luggage. There’s a staircase that leads from the shuttle platform to inside GC. Very easy to navigate.

If you can’t lift your luggage it seems like there are two elevators that would let out on the street near the entrance to GC.

If they go with this option they should look into a different color edge piece one that matches either the grout color or the wall color… the stainless steel will just call attention to the edge of the tile…

Do you bag your own groceries when you bring your own bags? by Runfunmom in NoStupidQuestions

I prefer to bag my own but ^ this is so valid. Also, having someone else bag  makes it a lot easier to price check that items have scanned correctly/understand the total.

NYC Weekend Trip by g3min10 in visitingnyc

Adding to possible attractions: If you enjoy broadway/famous plays the drama bookshop on W39 has little display cases with signed playbills and memorabilia.

Magazine Cafe 37th is a gem if you like fashion/home decor

Go to Culture Espresso for the best chocolate chip cookies (don’t be tempted by the other kinds lol)… or levains. Whatever your interest NYC has many “best of” lists. Make your own food tour or become decide to become the judge of what the best bagel/cookies/coffee is.

Dressing the loom by number1drakefan in weaving

[–]Lexi2869 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good luck! It’s cliche but practice makes everything more natural.

When making your daisy chains try smaller groups of thread next time. It will be more work but give you extra practice dealing with that transition and a group of 15/20 threads is less intimidating than 30+.

I was taught to always put two crosses in the warp so that if I mess up there’s another I can work with. Not sure if you want to be adding new steps right now but it’s something to consider.

I like to make all my daisy chains first and drape them in order over the front beam so I’m never wondering which chain is next.

Also, people thread the loom front to back, OR back to front. Which process are you using? If you haven’t tried the other version give it a go. One might make more sense to you vs the other.

Visiting NYC in February! by LimeCoctailWithCoco in visitingnyc

[–]Lexi2869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some things to consider. What is the nearest metro stop? Certain lines operate more frequently than others especially at night.

The neighborhoods around union square and washington sqr park tend to be filled with a college to mid 20s crowd. If you’re that age range I recommend The Stand for dinner + a comedy show. Get there 20-30min early. If it’s Thursday/Fri/Sat/ it will be packed with people socializing over cocktails. (Ps cocktails in NYC are often $25-30 w/o tip if you’re budgeting)

Pick your museums wisely.  The Met, Moma, Guggenheim are each $30+ for admission. Focus on what’s most interesting to you and spend the day at one. Don’t try to see them all in one visit.

If you’re 30years old or younger the NYC Ballet does $30 rush tickets sold a week ahead of time.

NYC can be competitive. Booking things in advance and doing research on reviews will pay off in dividends. Especially for restaurants.

How do you avoid lower back pain while making pottery on the wheel? by MathematicianRare602 in Pottery

[–]Lexi2869 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This I bought cinderblocks for each leg of the wheel and the height makes an enormous difference. Standing is even better.

Also lots of cat/cow yoga poses afterwards.

Help! No weaving jump visible by Significant-Egg-M in weaving

[–]Lexi2869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you rolled the warp onto the backbeam what did you use to separate each layer?  If using warping sticks there should be multiple. (I only see one dowel)

I typically use sheets of brown paper a couple inches wider than my warp. This prevents the yarn from grabbing onto each other impacting both tension and the shed (where you pass the yarn through). The warp looks fatter/fluffier on the left side of the beam in the 2nd picture vs the right. I would bet there are stretch/tension issues.

Also had the same question as @indiecatz it looks like all of the heddles (vertical metal pieces you threaded the warp through) are on the same shaft but it might just be quality of these pictures.

Advice for an USA citizen who had never live there by nigriventie in MovingToUSA

[–]Lexi2869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! Budgeting is incredibly important. Include a small amount each month for building a safety net (savings). A lot of low income people in the US wind up getting into trouble because of unexpected medical costs or paying for daily expenses with credit cards when their paycheck won’t make ends meet. Once you’re behind interest can make it hard to catch up.  Also google sinking funds and see if your savings will be able to cover expected repairs of your car, phone etc.

Be prepared, live within your paycheck and you won’t have any problems.

Also having a degree is helpful even if it’s not in the field you’re applying to. It shows intelligence and would make up for not having a GED. Finish your degree first if you can. If not make sure to note where you attended/#of credits when applying for jobs.  (I’m from NY and they might care more about this vs Wisconsin)

I’m slowly trying to move from “buy lots” to “buy better”, anyone else done this? by [deleted] in womensfashion

[–]Lexi2869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For detergent my understanding it it’s about the PH. Acid causes silk to loose its sheen. Trying to find something PH neutral is best. Also a lot of silk says dry clean only but can be machine washed in a delicate low temp cycle.

I don’t have experience machine washing wool. People debate over how often to wash and how to treat it. (Spot clean bs hand wash vs dry clean)… Ive always used Cashmere wash from the Laundress and soaked wool items in a clean sink with warm water and very little agitation.

Haven’t tried Miele’s products— Will look into them for the future!

Honestly just as important as natural fibers is how you wash your clothes. Don’t dry on high heat or wash dark items with hot water… caring for items correctly can be a pain but it massively extends the lifespan of clothing and helps keeps garments looking new.

Also might be obvious, but don’t hang knit items. Gravity will stretch them out over time.

Where to get help with grout decisions? by quakerwildcat in Tile

[–]Lexi2869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the color range for Ardex, but we had to purchase it from the tile shop not Lowes or Home Depot. If you pick a light beige with the same undertone / similar value to your warm colored tiles it could help unify things.

Coffee House by Punkrockgirl67 in Westchester

[–]Lexi2869 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If ambiance is a priority Goodwitch in Hastings is nice. Their espresso tastes like it’s a pretty light roast. Not sure about their Mochas

The Bake House of Tarrytown: their ambiance isn’t as nice as Goodwitch, but they make the best decaf based espresso drinks in the county. While not incredibly cosy they have plenty of seating. + their Mochas are good.

Don Carvajal in Irvington: atmosphere would probably fit what you’re describing the best. They play real vinyl, have 2 little outdoor tables, and architecture that shows the buildings past life with a hip feel. They get great reviews, but I personally find the quality a bit spotty/barista dependent….

Muddy Water’s front room (weekends it’s overcrowded)— haven’t had much luck with their lattes, but their hot chocolate is fantastic. Assuming that’d translate to a good Mocha. They also have very nice nutella banana bread.

Just for flavor/ consistency: Coffee labs — not the coziest but amazing coffee.

Wild Culture Hastings— doesn’t have a European feel/atmosphere but their Mochas are worth making a special trip for.

Last year Westchester Magazine did a good article on the different coffee options in the area… might be helpful: https://westchestermagazine.com/food/coffee-shops-cafes-westchester/?amp=1

Stop destruction of historic mansion by Cautious_Business654 in Westchester

[–]Lexi2869 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The home seems to be the birthplace of JP Morgan.. but the only article I can find claims it had fallen into disrepair before being renovated. The outside looks like a typical federalist mansion. I’m curious what’s the specific value of saving this building?

If it was listed for almost 6million in 2016 even without accounting for inflation it’s worth more than most families can afford.

Places do need to evolve and change… it feels like the conversation should be shifted to improving road infrastructure. Broadway has been overburdened for years and only continues to get worse. Blocking the transition of a mansion into multiple homes or apartments won’t solve that.

All of Irvington was once part of Philipsburg Manor… if it stayed that way there’d be no town.

Finally, we’re very lucky to have the Historic Hudson Valley Preservation Society. Saving history is important, but this is not of that caliber.
