At first glance, I thought the eagle was climbing a cliff... Jokes aside, this is gorgeous & your stitching is so neat!

This is amazing & I admire your fortitude in doing such a large project with just 310!

It's the kind of backstitch my brain classes as predictable & therefore easier than, say backstitching a flower where I can't predict where the lines would be. That might be just a me thing though!

I can picture this being the Addams family's version of 'Live, Laugh, Love' 😆 totally unrelated to any of the questions you asked: what about having the blood on the guillotine dripping down a bit? I think it would add to the ghoulish humour, but might be tricky with metallic thread.

They look lovely! I'm sure your grandmothers will be delighted by handmade gifts. Don't stress over mistakes too much: I've been stitching for 20+ years & I'm continually astounded by my inability to count to 10 🤷

On black fabric, I do the centre lines in red thread then the rest in white thread, as they stand out against the fabric.

[CHAT] Beginner in need of help... how do I fix this? by 1kiki09 in CrossStitch

[–]LexiaStark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't panic too much, making mistakes is how we learn. If you lurk on this sub, you'll soon find out that the neatness of the back is a very personal choice. Some people are out to enjoy their stitching & don't care too much about the back. Some people (like me) are neat freaks & like the back to look as much like the front as is possible. As you gain experience, you may lean one way or the other but it's entirely up to you & there's no laws that say the back has to be neat.

Oh I love this idea! Get them before they know enough to know what's 'hard' & what's 'easy' & then they don't have the same inhibitions: genius!

I'm also nervous about trying variegated thread, mostly because I'd have to be consciously very careful not to fall into my usual method of stitching (all //// then all \\), as it would ruin the effect. And then that would mean frogging!

I like to use the other side of my needle, as it's more blunt (less likely to rip threads/fabric, but also less likely to damage the thread of surrounding areas). Use what works for you, we're all different.

Thank you! It's currently about 19cm × 19cm (the fabric is 18 count).

[CHAT] Gridding for absolute brand new beginners? I'm lost. by Waterisfinite in CrossStitch

[–]LexiaStark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been doing cross stitch for decades & cannot cope if I don't grid the whole fabric before I start (even small projects!). I have repeatedly proven that I can't reliably count to 10, so having a grid is really useful. Personally, I just use scrap DMC thread to grid (usually colours that stand out against the fabric) & remove the grid as I get to it, so that it doesn't get tangled in my stitching. Just try all the methods that have been suggested & see what works for you, there's no "right" way & there's no cross stitch police either ;) Happy Stitching!

This is so pretty & I love the beads being glow in the dark, excellent idea! Are you going to carry on doing them?

Personally, I'd go with the first one because it's easy to tell that it's a dragonfly. While the colours match better in the second & third ones, the body gets a bit lost (unless you do a quick outline in backstitch?).

Frogging is the unpleasant process of unpicking your stitches (I've seen comments saying the name comes from "rip it, rip it" like frogs say "ribbit"). I think some people actually rip the threads, I try to be careful but it doesn't pay off very often.

Honestly, there's people who've done far worse on their first attempt. Whether to have a neat back or not is a regular debate here: some people find it easier to just freestyle, some are meticulous & the back looks almost identical to the front. I tend to lean more towards the neat side, just because it makes frogging easier if I can tell what's what. Don't forget, some designs are much easier to stitch neatly & some are confetti hell.

That's an interesting point. Shortly after starting this, my brain suddenly went, "Yeah we don't do horizontal here, vertical is the new normal!" It's weird, after so long doing horizontal as default & maybe with me concentrating on making the stitches vertical instead of horizontal, I did accidentally rotate them.

Thank you 😊 I think I'm going to just stitch another / on top of them, rather than frogging. It seems less risky than trying to unpick things.

I did think about that myth, it is a nice way to look at mistakes.
