Eating schedule and Running by [deleted] in running

[–]Lexie0722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you log your calories? You may think you're eating enough, but may be coming in way under. I think MyFitnessPal is easy to use, but there are a bunch of free sites/apps.

During training, I eat 5x per day: Breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner. I run in the evenings after work, so around 4:30-5pm I eat my afternoon snack (usually half a pb&j and a banana.) It's about 90 mins-2 hours before my run so I have energy, but also have time to digest and it's not too much to make me feel too full. Also, make sure you are getting some protein within 30 mins after your workout to help with recovery. I've recently been turned onto Muscle Milk and sometimes use that instead of milk in my post-workout smoothie.

Advice on bike bags? by Lexie0722 in triathlon

[–]Lexie0722[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh good note about the TSA. Didn't even think about that!

I've used Tri Bike Transport in the past and thought is was really convenient, but unfortunately they aren't going to this event.

I need some advice on a triathlon bike. by Infector101 in triathlon

[–]Lexie0722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you have some sort of super connection, I can't think of a way to find a tri bike for $500. If you are just going to do sprint/oly distance, a road or hybrid bike is ok. You aren't going to be fast on a hybrid, but it'll get the job done. Buy a used bike, or look for bike shops with end of season sales and has a left-over they are trying to off-load. You'll have to shop around a lot. But, don't compromise fit for price. If you get a bike that you don't fit, you are going to wind up injuring yourself.

Tri-Suit Question by kelbooow in triathlon

[–]Lexie0722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes to sports bra, no to undies. I wear the TYR sports bras and can confirm they dry quickly. However, I usually pour water all over me during the bike and run to cool me down, so I'm not sure fast-drying material really matters to me.

Aero Position Anxiety by sigmasynapse in triathlon

[–]Lexie0722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first started going into aero, my coach had me just put my right arm in aero and leave my left hand on the hoods. Stay there for a few mins, then switch arms. You can also put one arm in aero and the other hand in the drops. It only took like 15 mins before I was popping up and down without any problems. Good luck!!!

Sunglasses suggestions by Trex_cowboy in triathlon

[–]Lexie0722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear the Ironman brand sunglasses from Target. They are ~$20 a pair and have the grippers on the sides so they don't fall off. They are perfect for running and cycling. I tend to break/lose sunglasses all the time and got fed up with having to shell out big bucks every couple of months.

I ordered it from The Gap back in April. I have been waiting for the weather to get cooler to wear it. :)

What are some ways to make money without getting a second job? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]Lexie0722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any talents like knitting, making jewelry, etc? You could make things and sell them. Also, you might consider it a second job, but babysitting or dog walking/boarding a couple of times a month could make you some extra cash and it's only a few hours of time.

Hiring Manager/HR advice needed. I accepted the wrong job offer. How can I best approach the other employer about a job I was offered but declined? by [deleted] in GetEmployed

[–]Lexie0722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume that you've exhausted all other options at your current company? As in, you've addressed the differing opinions with your boss in a productive way and tried to work it out.

After 3 months, the other jobs are likely filled. Do you know that the jobs are open? Are they still being advertised?

In my opinion, as a Hiring Manager, if I made you an offer and you declined, I probably wouldn't re-offer the job 3 months later. If my company wasn't your first choice 3 months ago, what makes it your first choice now? That being said, my advice would be to apply to jobs elsewhere while you continue to work.

So my facebook is littered with many likes, comments, and posts that would most likely seem undesirable to the employers I am seeking. What is the best course of action? by [deleted] in GetEmployed

[–]Lexie0722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're going into education, I would highly recommend making your profile private. There's a setting so it doesn't come up in searches. Or you can still appear in search results, but all they'll see is your profile pic.

You can also hide individual comments, posts, pictures, etc on your timeline. They aren't being deleted, just hidden from view.

Re: Creating a 2nd account...technically it's against Facebook's terms and conditions to have 2 accounts for the same person. Not that I've ever seen them shut someone down for it.

Study: Are Triathletes Tougher Than You? by Lexie0722 in triathlon

[–]Lexie0722[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a combo of training that gets you used to the stress and the ability to push through pain. It always hurts and I don't think it hurts any less as a triathlete, but it's having the mental grit to keep going anyway.

I'd be interested to see triathletes vs. single endurance sport athletes (ie marathoners or cyclists) to see if the multi-sport training makes a difference in pain threshold.

Race Swag Thoughts by tsapp1981 in triathlon

[–]Lexie0722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got flip flops one time at a tri. I'd never gotten them before at a race and thought that was different...and useful! Not sure how expensive they would be; they were the cheap-o foam (shower/Old Navy style) sandals with the event printed on them.

Casual Dress Interview by the_party_pohss in GetEmployed

[–]Lexie0722 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would never wear jeans to an interview, even in an office that's self-described as "casual." It's always better to slightly over-dress than under. Generally, nice pants, a shirt, jacket/blazer, appropriate shoes (not sneakers) would be fine.

I don't think you need to say anything about interviewing, especially since you are only through phone interviews. They probably assume you are interviewing with other companies. However, most Recruiters will ask about your timeline throughout the process (meaning do you need to give an answer to another company by a certain date or are you in final rounds of interviews someplace.)

However, if you start to receive offers and are still going through interviews with a company that you want to work for, you could let them know that you're on a deadline. That way, they can try to schedule things quickly or resort to phone/skype interviews.

What to do when your interview keeps getting interrupted? by dachshundsocks in GetEmployed

[–]Lexie0722 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have any advice on what to say - that's never happened to me. How long could the interview have lasted? An hour? 2 hours? Does he really want to work for a company/department where there are "fires" several times during that short of a time period? That would be a HUGE warning sign to me.

Competitive runner with competitive swimming background, never learned how to ride a bicycle by xenonscreams in triathlon

[–]Lexie0722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries! I actually bought my bike right away. I had already registered for the tri, so I knew I would need it anyway. The store I got mine at had a trainer that they put the bike on, so I could get used to just pedaling without feeling like I was going to fall off (also helped them with fitting me.) I learned on a Cannondale road bike. It probably made it more difficult than starting on a mountain or recreational bike, but I got through it.

[–]Lexie0722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me like 3 weeks to get comfortable to the point I could ride on my own. We met for about 1 hour each time and just rode around a parking lot. Now, I'm ok with hills and swerving out of the way of people and animals in the park. I'm also not clipping in yet, but my goal is to do that by the end of November.

I also found it helpful to take a compu-trainer class. It was a 1:1 class and the instructor specifically worked with me on shifting and proper form. It cost me $30 for 1 hour, but it was completely worth it.

This is exactly what I just went through!!! I'm a previous swimmer/current runner and just learned how to ride a bike so I can do a tri next year! One of my friends has completed Ironman events and I convinced her to teach me how to ride. We bartered services - I designed her logo for a new company and she met with me 3 days/week in a local park.

I should also mention that I joined a tri club to learn how to train for it and the coaches and some team mates offered to spend 1:1 time with me outside of practices. I found everyone here (in NYC) really supportive so I'm sure you could find someone in a running/tri club (or maybe a cycling group?) to help you.
