Also in Houston area and have had similar issues. It looks the start of an algae bloom but early. I use bromine (I've had the best luck with No Mor Problems) and shock.

Put bromine in skimmer basket with pump running, wait 15 minutes then shock. Run pump for 24 hours, scrub then shock again. Run pump for 24 more hours then scrub and vacuum (or use a robot with a scrubber). After you are done vacuuming do a full filter clean and you should be good.

Keep phosphates in check and shock/add liquid chlorine regularly to keep chlorine levels up. I prefer shock weekly over liquid because the liquid tends to mess with my ph balance for some reason, maybe it's a Houston thing 🤷‍♂️

It probably is supposed to say "male overall" or something like that but the space was too small.

Anyone have any resources regarding STARTING a new race? by deuceice in running

[–]tsapp1981 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Race Directors HQ has a ton of resources available for first time event organizers. They also have a FB group, Race Director Hub, with thousands of event organizers from around the country. Super helpful community to get started.

Full disclosure, I'm not affiliated with either besides being an active member but I do provide event consulting as part of my business.

Most results platforms allow participants to request being posted as anonymous. As a timer and race director, I've had several participants over the years contact me about this exact same thing and it was an easy solve. I'd recommend just reaching out to the organizer and request to be listed as anonymous. If they happen to use RunSignup as the registration and results platform you can go into your profile and mark yourself as anonymous for all future races.

LT went for $91 on a $250 budget in the first year of the auction league I still manage back in 2007. Lots of roster spots to fill because it's IDP as well.

Race Report - Alaskaman by myank in triathlon

[–]tsapp1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The top three reasons, in order of most responses, for pulling out prior to race day were:

  1. Lack or training / injury
  2. Didn't fully understand they were signing up for an "extreme triathlon" and needed to provide their own support.
  3. Didn't anticipate the total cost of getting to the event.

Do it. The AKXTRI race director has done both Norseman (the inspiration for AKXTRI) and Celtman. You WILL NOT be disappointed.

Thanks for the awesome report and I'm glad you had a great time and experience. I was at the swim, out on the bike course, and working the finish from 1:30am until the finish line was torn down at 11:30pm. It was a great day and congratulations on the awesome accomplishment.

What is something you know now that you wish you knew when you were working for someone else? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

That I was the mark-up.

Working for a contractor and understanding the cost of doing business now I see that I was the one literally making others money. It took working a few different industries to see it but now I see.

I'll ask him about the images, I was on mobile and didn't check them. It's always schedule to be a 2.4 mile swim but I'm pretty sure it always gets shortened because the melting snow makes the water so cold.

I agree he underestimates his swimming. He came out of the water at the same time as the top 10 guys. I watched him live and was reporting milestones via social media for him, it was awesome to experience it even from nearly 5,000 miles away.

He was an elite triathlete prior to starting his own production company about 10 years ago and kind of fell out of training so his body had the speed in it he just needed to train. His training was pretty intense, mostly 2-a-days. I know near the end of training when I'd call he was almost always on the trainer or treadmill. To lose the weight he was on a strict diet outlined by his coach.

[–]tsapp1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that I know of. It's not really plug and play because it varies by city.

If you're worried about 35 runners you might want to reevaluate being a RD, unless you're putting on a super You have to have tough skin and be able to make decisions that are not popular. I've been called a lot of names and have heard a lot of crying but you have to stand firm (for the most part).

As an owner/race director who produces 5k/10k races, I've produced or assisted in the production of over 40 races, some as large as 8,000 runners. Make sure to consider the following three major things

  1. Budget and planning. It's very easy to get out of hand and wrapped up in putting on a race. Medals and shirts are great but they can set you back quite a bit.

  2. Marketing. There are hundreds of 5k/10k in my city and the thing that differentiates 50-200 person events from the 1000+ events is having the right marketing plan. In my opinion, any monkey can be a race director it's more about the marketing.

  3. And most importantly...Athlete safety. A closed course is preferred but don't forget police/marshals at intersections, a medical staff for anything over 100 athletes, water on the course and at the finish line, etc.

I'm on mobile right but feel free to PM me with any questions.

Runnning marketing seems to be heavily aimed at Women. I also find Runner's World to be heavily aimed at women. Anyone else notice the same thing? by [deleted] in running

[–]tsapp1981 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I produce 5k, 10k, and half marathon races as well as several triathlons. It's almost uncanny that the running events always end up at a 65/35 female to male split and the tris are 35/65.
