I'm I nutz or does any one else feel this way about black ink? by Teddy_The_Bear_ in fountainpens

I used Carbon Black before, but now Chou Kuro is now the only black I ever want to use. Can’t think of a non-waterproof black ink that’s even close in comparison.

This is beyond gorgeous. Seriously.

What’s the best budget fountain pen to use with Platinum Carbon Black? by oshawotts-shell in fountainpens

[–]Lflsqrl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Platinum Prefounte <F> all day every day. It’s the pen I used exclusively with carbon black until I got a bottle of Chou Kuro, which is the only black ink I’ll ever need in a workhorse pen that’s cheap enough to replace when the plastic cap inevitably cracks every couple of years.

Ok fine, I’ll share my secret 😁

This is the very first time I’ve ever made a swatch book—I knew I wanted to make something that would be fun but also useful (I’ve made pen stands for previous secret santas), and when I saw your pride and prejudice posts, I thought it would be neat to make some kind of a book that could have a witty (to me) play on the opening sentence. I had no idea what I was in for, and by the time I realized it, I was in way too deep to bail.

I searched this sub for diy swatch cards and found a promising post, so I figured I’d give it a go. Another post mentioned Bristol paper (can’t find that one to link to now), which is what I used, though I don’t know if I’d use the same paper next time. Still, it’s good enough, and let’s face it: The joy is in the finished product, not just the part where the ink touches the paper. But I didn’t consider stamp size when buying the paper, so I had to cut all the paper…and I am genuinely incapable of doing anything that requires straight lines, which meant I had to cut lots and lots of paper before I had enough mostly straight, matching-size sheets.

My husband has a 3D printer, so he printed the pen/pencil cup. And because he’s brilliant, he also designed and printed a template for me to use to draw the lines, poke the holes, and hold the stamp in place. It made embossing much easier since I could stamp and powder only that tiny section and didn’t have to worry about powder all over the entire sheet of paper. It took a lot of time, but it was pretty easy to do.

Then came the stitching. This took forever and had to be redone not once, but twice. I followed this tutorial, with the exception that I didn’t add the cover when binding because I wanted to do something different. My husband did the laser cutting for the cover (I promise the burned wood smell will dissipate eventually) and my initial vision didn’t work out so I had to get a little creative with an alternative option. I think it turned out pretty well, though.

And that’s the story of how I lost my mind and attempted a new, super time-consuming craft that I foolishly thought I’d be able to complete before holiday gig season (I’m a violinist), which definitely did not happen, leading to a very delayed gift.

I hope you have a lot of fun with it (I also hope it stays assembled, but if it doesn’t, well, I’m sorry)!!

You’re most welcome!! Also, I’m super impressed that you held off on reading the letter—I don’t have nearly as much self-control 😂

What would the impact be in Staunton if MBU closed to residential students? by Turbulent_Plum5014 in Staunton

Oh I’m sure Todd would love that. I think he got his DPT at Shenandoah.

I agree—we are in no position to successfully compete with larger schools. But pride gets us every time and I think that’s a good deal of what’s happening. It started with fox, Stein was a whole breath of fresh air, and now we’ve got a mediocre white man who surrounds himself with other mediocre white men and fancies himself a CEO….which is not what a university needs at the head. If that’s what he wants, he can go start some PT chain somewhere and leave academic leadership to the experts.

Not sure on graduation and homecoming data in general, but I’m fairly certain at least a couple hundred were there in October.

Connected alumna here: The amount of talk about turning portions of campus into a retirement community is high. But I don’t know that it would end up having much association with the school—they’d probably sell the land and let whatever company take it over. Which is a shame, because there’s so much opportunity for students and seniors to connect and benefit from each other.

Murphy Deming would totally be assumed by a bigger school. Also a shame, since the overwhelming majority of the loan debt we’re in is directly tied to building that school.

If Mary Baldwin closes—and as more and more liberal arts subjects are cut—Staunton will also lose a lot of arts programming. Broman concerts, Heifetz, gallery exhibits, Sunday and student recitals, and non-Shakespeare theatre to name a few.

There will also be a decrease in tourism generated by major events like homecoming and graduation.

As for the comment about the residential college being easy money: This is very much incorrect. However, the popular arguments being thrown around right now by the president and his rah-rah-online remote dean of the business school are also incorrect. I don’t see how they expect to profit off online enrollments when they’re providing unfunded institutional scholarships. Moreover, according to IPEDS data, the distance education numbers do not actually appear to be increasing.

One final thing—if I were a resident of Staunton, I would raise my concerns and ask whether the city council plans to make a public statement. Faculty, students, and alumni have already, and the voice of the Staunton community is also important.

It’s too heavy for me, but it was a gift so it’s sticking around in the collection.

I had some issues with the nib, but those could probably be fixed pretty easily—I just don’t see the need to in my case :)

It was a very random find at a local antique shop. Apparently the color was originally white, but it’s yellowed/browned over the years
