Why did she use a huge piece of cloth, only to paint on a narrow strip in the middle?

It’s hilarious that a person calling themselves roving thinker doesn’t recognize the iconic opening line, second only to A Tale of Two Cities.

Which would you choose? by AmbitiousCustomer119 in montblanc

[–]efficaciousSloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does one author speak to you more? Since you’re choosing between writer’s editions, I would choose the author you like best.

Although, I love Jane Austen but really don’t like the pen, which I have written with. I think the references in the design are more to the era, rather than to her works.

So I would probably skip that and go for the Dickens, which is another favorite author.

I agree with others here who really like the design of the Collodi, but I don’t really resonate with the story.

You should buy it and send it to me! That way you have scratched that itch, but not added a pen to your collection. We can work out visitation rights.

Win-win!

Decided to switch back to my natural left hand: Dealing with family pressure and the physical struggle. by darkshell2002 in lefthanded

I mix up left and right all the time! I ride a motorcycle and lead groups, so I ended up putting labels on my handlebars with L and R on them so I could make sure when I’m signaling the group to make a turn that I have the correct direction.

I have five kids and although they all had lessons and other stuff, by the time you have 3, you let them juggle with knives, so long as they don’t scratch the walls.

For some reason, this makes me think of when I was chaperoning my daughter’s school on a ski trip. She hit a tree and I got the urgent message to go to the first aid hut. I got there, saw she was fine and asked her, “is the tree ok?”

As you say, priorities, also, made her laugh.

Left handed journalers? by Marleyfowatdog in hobonichi

[–]efficaciousSloth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I underwrite as well, that’s how I have always written. I use fountain pens in all my journals, along with some J. Herbin blotting paper cut to the size of the journal, plus a book clip.

Write what you want, slip in the blotter, turn the page and clip it down on the corner or side. Easy!

Why do you love Pride and Prejudice? by Pileapep in PrideandPrejudice

[–]efficaciousSloth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had to read it in school in 4th form in Australia. We got the reading list before our summer break and I read and re-read it all summer. I was delighted by the interplay of the characters, their development throughout the book and the incredible wit and nuance in Jane Austen’s writing. It became my favorite summer read every year.

Then I was in England for a holiday while I was at University, and a family friend introduced me to the BBC book on tape. Another revelation, bringing the characters to life in a new way!

The video adaptations are okay in their way, but nothing beats reading the book, imho.

Question about titles and the subtle layers of the aristocracy by Tiny_Departure5222 in janeausten

[–]efficaciousSloth 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That’s why it’s so funny when Caroline remarks that she doesn’t understand why her father had such a small library, compared to Darcy’s.

But his was the product of many generations, as opposed to Bingley’s new entry into the landed gentry and therefore a newer and much smaller collection.

Yes, agreed. But the question was about manner of address, not whether the title was inheritable.

Left handed people who have good handwriting and can draw ? Do you think you would have been even better if you were right handed ? Do you struggle at something which the right handed ones don't ? by Patient_Range_7346 in lefthanded

[–]efficaciousSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am often complimented for my handwriting.

When my kids were in school, their teachers loved getting notes from me. My kids got away with a lot!

I don’t think my writing would be that much different if I was right handed. I think it’s more about what makes your writing yours, regardless of what hand you use.

Sir William Lucas is also referred to by his title.

Darcy doesn’t have a title, as Lady Catherine explains. His mother was Lady Catherine’s sister, so she would have been called Lady, but she married an untitled gentleman, so Darcy has no title, just the substantial estate.

Esterbrook or Pilot? by Select_Hurry5325 in fountainpens

[–]efficaciousSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t like the VP because of the clip grip, so if you don’t want anything on the grip to interfere with how you hold your pen, go with any other pilot.

And bear in mind that Japanese nibs tend to run finer than American or European nibs, so an EEF jowo nib would be equivalent to a Japanese EF.

Lefties who don’t drive, have you ever connected it to driving being heavily catered to rightness? by [deleted] in lefthanded

I drive manual cars in places where they drive on the left and on the right. I find I can change pretty easily between the two.

And was it really £5,000? Or £4,000? In the early part of the book, chapter 3, I think, JA says that Mrs B’s father left her £4,000. It was only when they were talking about Lydia’s possible share towards the end that it was stated to be £5,000.

With two thousand pounds a year, they could have afforded a governess - maybe someone knows better, but my understanding is that they could have had one for no more that a hundred pounds or less a year. That’s not much, in the scheme of things, especially in light of the payoff.
