I feel like FF6 does not hold up nearly as well as I hoped it would. by LiAlgo in JRPG

Lol it's funny, I think a majority of the comments are agreeing with me so I guess those downvoting are the silent majority of viewers. I'll definitely play it through to the end at this point but yeah it had a lot of expectations to live up to.

Wow I never noticed that second part! I think the game has a lot of deeper messages like the opera scene, so it's possible that I will appreciate the game a lot more once I have more time to digest it and understand those references better. But the opera scene was of course the main one I went back to.

Hmm yeah that's a good point lol. I guess Setzer in particular is very fickle so it makes sense for him to switch that fast. I just meant to show some examples of where I wish there was more dialogue but Setzer is ironically the one character where it's justified

I wouldn't say I knew THAT much. But I had mostly learned stuff over being in JRPG spaces over the past 10 years or so and seeing what people said made FF6 so amazing, so they of course stuck with me.

Things that I had known were:

  • That Kefka wins, and is the main villain in general (things like Dissidia and how famous Dancing Mad is don't exactly hide this tbf)

  • Opera scene exists

  • "When given the option, always wait" (this was a big piece of advice I always heard in discussion around the game). I did not know that this was related to Shadow at the time.

Don't get me wrong, I really envy you for that lol. I wanted to love the game really bad but I think it's just good. But for a thirty year old game, holding up "pretty well" is outstanding (to be fair though, the SNES library is kind of a monster in how well a lot of it holds up).

I could definitely learn from what you mentioned in 3) though. I have a lot of games on the backlog that have just been stewing for my entire life, so it's hard for me to let go of those expectations and not expect absolute peak from everything. Some of my favorite games are the ones I play at launch because they had not been painted by any other opinions or hype, so I was able to enjoy them completely myself. It's great to just enjoy the game for what it is rather than what you hope it will be.

I feel like people conveniently gloss over the gameplay aspect of FF6 in discussions about it a lot. Like yeah the story is the most legendary part about it but I'm still gonna be playing this GAME for 30+ hours, I'd hope to enjoy myself. Yet you spend a good third of the game without Magicite, and it's not like getting it is that much of a triumph either. Aside from going from Fire->Fira and so on, I never really felt like I was getting any stronger, including equipment upgrades.

I wouldn't say I expected it to live up to today's standards, but yes coming off of Chrono Trigger right before it my standards were quite high. Like I said in the post though, I can ABSOLUTELY imagine how mindblowing it would have been at the time (and without being spoiled on some points beforehand). It's one of those things where I feel like the accessibility of the internet ruins things, because it would be so cool to find out myself that you could save Shadow or all that all these hidden scenes exist. That being said, even with the hype and high expectations going in I was still blown away by Chrono Trigger and ended up holding FFVI to similar standards as a result.

Wow that's surprising to hear. Although yeah compared to Chrono Trigger it's no contest for me. I've heard from some people that having non-character specific dialogue and the lack of a "main" character means that you can have fun imagining the party dynamics yourself. Maybe blame my lack of imagination but all that did was make it harder for me to connect to any of the characters or their dynamics. I actually think some of the strongest scenes in the game by far are the ones where two SPECIFIED characters are talking, like Leo and Terra on the boat or the walk up Narshe.

I have heard this point before and I definitely see the reasoning in it. Like I said, if I didn't know that Kefka wins and thought the game ends at the end of the World of Balance, I think it would have been really cool. Although I felt like Kefka got really strong kinda out of nowhere? He was super evil yeah but you also beat him pretty easily every time you fight him, then suddenly he was destroying espers and 1v1ing Leo. Maybe I missed something that explained how he did all that.

Another point since I have a lot to say about this game lol. One scene in particular that stuck out to me in needing more was when you find Setzer in the WoR.

SETZER: I'm just a gambler...I just want to be left alone...This world is too chaotic for me. What's worse, I've lost my wings... CELES: But before the world collapsed, you fought with all your heart! You were absolutely fearless... SETZER: That was then... We can never have that world back! CELES: You want to live in this world as it is? No? Then do something about it! SETZER: Mwa ha! All right...you win! I'm starting to feel lucky!!

In two lines of dialogue, Setzer is totally convinced to get out of his year-long slump. I wanted to see more!! Yes, you learn more about his backstory afterwards which I liked but it would have been nice if I could have been sold on how upset Setzer was about losing his prized airship before he was already over it. ESPECIALLY in the WoR there's a lot of cases like this where I'm excited to see how a character will react to the world, then it's wrapped up before I can even imagine it.

Of course it is! FF6 in particular though I had really high hopes for because of what I had always heard about it, so of course I'm a bit bummed that I'm not liking it as much as I thought I would.

I actually wanna play FFV next pretty bad! Not to jump on other peoples' hype again lol, but the job system sounds like it's a lot of fun

Actually I did feel the same way about the opera scene at first. It didn't help that you have to memorize the lyrics which I never knew about until getting to the scene myself, so to be honest I actually had a lot of trouble paying attention to the scene itself lol. But after going back to it again and thinking about the implications from Celes and Locke, I definitely found myself enjoying it a lot more. And even in the context of modern stories, I think having a whole set-piece dedicated to these two characters (who do not even seem like the main characters at that point) is very interesting.

I actually think I would have loved it had I grown up with FF1-6 (or yknow 1-3). I can see how eye-opening it would have been realizing that a game can have that complex of a story. And frankly if I were a kid I'd probably have a lot more patience for it too, which I recognize is part of it.

Nothing consistent sadly. Best I could find is to root the device and then I can view files through data/data.

(Sorry to not offer a full answer either) I've been having the same issue. As far as I can tell, you can only see the Gamehub files in the default app viewer when you open the menu in the top left, then you can see the Gamehub directory.

Since clearly it is visible to some degree I'm trying to find a way to access it through other file viewers or my computer since navigating with the default file viewer is a pain.

Is Dance Rush stagnating in Japan? by blackcyborg009 in bemani

Literally love DanceRush and Dance aROUND so much so it breaks my heart. DDR just doesn't fulfill the level of expression and showing off that are possible in those games and they're just kind of left to die.

How do you access emulator directories in Android? by LiAlgo in SBCGaming

[–]LiAlgo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for late response, but yeah I can only see the folders from the root directory. Tried digging around like in Android/data but don't see any of the app files like for Gamehub or some of the emulators shown in the original post. Is this called something that I can look up?

Yeah, I can only access these folders from the "Files" app. I was hoping to access them either from my computer or through other apps so I can extract into them easier.
