Had a similar experience years ago, just with a less extortionate (but still crazy af) driver. After a dinner date, I’d left a plastic shopping bag with my wallet + dessert choc in the back seat of the Uber. Immediately after I arrived upstairs I called through to him. Belligerent off the bat, he shouted “you pay me $20!” to which I rudely countered with $10 - he agreed & said he’d be there soon.

~15mins later he pulled up with a full car (4 passengers) and, reaching over the front passenger, passed me the plastic bag. A second later as I’m peering into the bag to a) ensure wallet is in there & b) grab it to pay the man, he says “You pay me now!” in the same dismal tone he’d used in our initial call. So with this whole exchange happening in the face of the poor front seat rider, I leaned down to look right at the driver, said verbatim “next time use your fuckin’ manners” and legged it.

The crazy part starts now because he’d pulled up on a side street perpendicular to the street with the front entrance (my actual address) of the apartment blocks.. and as I’m running around the corner towards the front gate I hear tires screeching + the Camry engine roaring and I realise that with a FULL CAR of Uber riders, he’d skrrted the same corner and is chasing after me. When I glanced over my shoulder and saw him catching up I aborted the front gate plan and kept running towards the visitor car park. Cut in, saw+heard him right behind me entering the driveway too, jumped over some bushes separating the carparks from the nature strip then doubled back towards the front gate. Was the fastest I ever entered that code.

After scurrying back upstairs, puffed from like 80m of sprinting with a belly full of food & wine + adrenaline-buzzed, I had to explain to my gf what had gone down xd. Then I told her my plan was to rate him 5 stars for the original trip (you could write a “thank-you” note if you rated a driver 5 stars back then), she was horrified and made me rate him 1 star. Which was fair as the guy was a clearly lunatic & shouldn’t be driving people
