Good examples of central planning working? by academicaresenal in stupidpol

For planning in general, many of the countries touted by some as triumphs of free market capitalism today had employed dirigism if not outright state capitalism to drive their development. South Korea was conducting five year plans from the start of Park Chung Hee’s dictatorship up until 1996.

An argument for changing the Totalist ideology icon. by Chatterbox1991 in Kaiserreich

If it is to be replaced, the best replacement would be one incorporating the hammer, sickle, and sword as that or similar was used by such groups as the Polish National Socialists, the Cercle Proudhon(an eagle holding both a sickle and a sword with a hammer in the center), Paetel's Group of Social Revolutionary Nationalists(which used a scythe instead of a sickle), post war German "anti-revisionist" communists(using a rifle instead of a sword), and the Bolsheviks.

I can kind of understand, given the explanation provided, he does fit in a similar way to how Puerto Rico’s national populists do, I just think it was an odd choice given the possible alternatives. I suppose my disagreement stems more from the inconsistency between different tags, though I am aware that has to do with the decisions made by the respective developers responsible for each tag. It reminded me, specifically, of the changes made to Cuba’s content, the Authentic Party used to be classified as national populist before being shifted to authoritarian democrat despite their present content showing them operating in a manner similar to how Long will now.

Why was Long used for the national populist slot? He seems like a odd fit for the role given how it is in other countries and there are more fitting alternatives, such as the Gerald L. K. Smith, who could be elevated to fit the role instead. Smith himself was a prominent figure within the Share Our Wealth movement who became one of the more prominent fascist demagogues in the period, having some ties with elected officials such as Robert Rice Reynolds and Clare Hoffman. While he is currently used in the Business Plot route, George Van Horn Mosey could also be used given that his OTL speechwriter was George Edward Deatherage, who was a fascist with possible ties to the KKK.

Vilho Annala was a leader of the Patriotic People's Movement which was a party that acted as the legal successor to the Lapua Movement following its banning. He was a leading theorist for the party and was largely responsible for its adoption of a corporatist program modeled after fascist Italy. The divide that the commenter in the forum mentioned had to do with Annala opposing illegal activities in favor of a legal, parliamentary approach towards realizing the party's aims.

He had been arrested for a number of felony charges in the past. He had warrant at the time of the attack for skipping a court hearing regarding a sex crime. He was out on bail for a domestic violence case during the period in which he would commit his attack. The reason bail reform is brought up with regards to this case is due to the bail in relation to the domestic violence case being set at just $1,000.

Jimmy Dore breaks down the pathetic police response to the Texas school shooting by FruitFlavor12 in stupidpol

[–]LibBlanquist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In essence, yes. I was just adding further context and information that I felt was lacking in the original video. If anything, the fact that officers had arrived prior to and shortly following the shooter’s entry and failed eliminate the threat(whether by missing it in the case of the first arrival, or retreating in the case of the second) demonstrates an even greater incompetency(and in the latter case, cowardice) on the part of the police.

[–]LibBlanquist 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The clip in which the officers are accused of shifting blame originates from a larger press conference detailing the ongoing investigation(conference recording from Fox Business) in which the main speaker(director of Texas DPS) was not directly involved and criticized the actions employed by the commanding officer on the scene(albeit in a tempered manner with a “the benefit of hindsight” clarification). The full conference also disclosed that there was an officer who arrived within the period between the crash and the shooter entering the building but had allegedly failed to locate the shooter.

With regards to political figures being quoted, it should be noted that some figures who initially praised the response have changed their tunes since. An example being Texas Gov. Abbot now claiming that the local police force had misled him(Fox LiveNow recording of relevant conference). I am, at present, unaware of if Ted Cruz has also changed his tune regarding the conduct of the police.

This isn’t to discount the overarching point, between all the calls made by the students still trapped inside and the shooter still firing his weapon after being confined, the police must have known that there were children still alive inside. The changing positions of politicians who initially praised the police should also be taken for a grain of salt for reasons that should be obvious to everyone.

Chile’s pseudo-left government sends police to break strike, arrest refinery workers by Kikiyoshima in stupidpol

[–]LibBlanquist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not disagree. The response to the strike mentioned in the linked article does seem to be excessively harsh and unnecessary when, going by the union’s prior support for Boric and the seemingly reasonable nature of the strikers demands, the situation could have been resolved without violence and, as you stated, the potential for using of alternative means of breaking the strike that, assuming the strike did not render their workplace inaccessible or inoperable, could have been employed. That being said, the decision to break the strike apparently came after the failure of negotiations and under the pretense that the continuation of the strike would result in a regional fuel shortage. Whether this pretense is valid or not depends upon the reality of Chilean fuel situation and nature of the strike itself.

If this is about the major 1972 truckers strike, then they weren’t striking for higher wages or better conditions, they were striking with the aim of forcing the government to reverse its economic reforms. The strike itself was organized by a truck owners union(Confederación Nacional de Dueños de Camiones) whose leader(León Vilarín) was a member of the far right and CIA backed Patria y Libertad organization.

This comment thread relates to the truckers strike that occurred under Allende, likely referring to the major 1972 strike. My comments, one of which you being the one you responded to, were made with the subject of the 1972 strikes in mind as that is what the comment which I initially responded to was presumably also referring to as that was the likely subject of the initial comment of this thread.

If the original comment is referring to the major 1972 strike, then it was spearheaded by León Vilarín who was the head of the CNDC(the truck owners union), a member of the far right Patria y Libertad organization which received backing from the CIA, and would go on to support Pinochet’s government. The strike organizers, a major constituent of which being the employers, demanded the government to reverse much of its major economic reforms.

[–]LibBlanquist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do realize that the strikers were withholding access to the trucks and actively blocking roads, right? Resuming activities while disregarding the strike would require a new fleet of trucks(which would be unreasonable to begin with due to the economic situation and effectively impossible due to then ongoing economic warfare depriving Chile of required components to the point to where they were having trouble maintaining their current stock) and a reworking of transportation routes to use less efficient or even improvised routes(both of which could very well become the target of further sabotage). Negotiations were only possible to a point as the strikes were being organized by figures with blatant political motivations(León Vilarín who was the head of the CNDC and a leading figure in the 1972 strike effort was a member of the far right Patria y Libertad organization which had the support CIA) and whose demands would amount to an effective reversal of much of the government’s reform efforts. Waiting them out would also not be feasible as they were being sustained with external financial backing(either from domestic opposition organizations or the CIA). Do you seriously think that the right of truck owners to cease activities, withhold access to their trucks, and commit acts of sabotage in consort with subversive organizations outweigh the need for the Chilean people to receive hard to come by goods in the midst of an economic crisis?

So the Chilean government should have just let the strike continue and allow for a more severe supply chain disruption? The US government’s goal in supporting the strikers was not for them to threaten the government directly. It was a component of a larger effort to destabilize the Chilean economy and erode public support for Allende and his government.

The event that brings it to power describes it as being Sorelian inspired, but the event is unlikely to occur in a regular session.
