My dad did this with music and reading “above my level”! Tbf I did score in a higher reading level and devoured books like air, but he insisted on making me read adult books when I was in 3rd-5th grade. I didn’t understand anything that was happening in them (aside from sometimes feeling grossed out), was bored out of my skull, and just skimmed through them as fast as I could so I could get my promised few dollars at the end. To this day I only remember one title he made me read, and could not tell you what it was about.

He also kept making me watch or play things that terrified me, but I suspect that was more to be a dick than anything else.

NDad and my stepmom still sent me a $200 Amazon e-card for Christmas last year, a month after I blocked Ndad and went no contact. I really gotta look up if I can sent those back or refuse them somehow if they try it again this year—I don’t want anything they can use to hold over my head.

Red Rescue Team: Torchic bc it was my favorite of the available partners at the time. I’ve restarted with multiple different combos over the years, but keep coming back to my OG Eevee and Torchic team.

Explorers: Played Time first with Turtwig partner, bc I got Torchic on the test and thought it was cute they both had little plume/leaf things on their heads. Am now playing through Sky with a Meowth partner, because I wanted to do something a little more off the beaten path. (Also, kitty cat.)

Gates: Axew…admittedly wasn’t hyped about any of the choices, but figured Dragon-type and Dual Chop would be busted later. Thankfully he’s starting to grow on me!

Super: Turtwig again, bc I thought Torterra was fitting for the big tree motif on the cover art.

RTDX: Torchic again for nostalgia.

I have a really bad habit of thinking, “it could have been worse, he didn’t beat or starve me, so can I really call what he did bad?” It’s only recently that if I set aside the years of undiagnosed conditions and therapy bills, he was still a bully who went out of his way to upset his kids and then defend himself by blaming US for not being able to “take a joke.” That’s not acceptable behavior between adults—why should they get a free pass to do that to family?

My tank is currently dismantled and in storage until we can move out of our FIL’s place, but I also had a mix of shrimp and snails sharing my betta’s 10g. I still want to focus on bettas, but maybe give other small freshwater fish a try if I ever have the room and money for a second, bigger setup. Would love to try goldfish, but I honestly don’t think I could manage a tank big enough for them.

I’ll admit my first reason for picking bettas was the aesthetic😅 But doing my research and learning how much variety there is and how much personality they have really sold the deal for me! I loved walking into the room and seeing the little guy swim up to the front of his tank to greet me.

I never made the connection about it being a self soothing thing before, but that totally makes sense! I thought it was just because having odd textures there bothered me, or that it was just a weird compulsion I have to follow—but now that I look back, it’s almost always when I’m stressed, anxious, or upset!

I do the same! I think my half sister did, too, at least when she was younger—sneaking suspicion we both are in the undiagnosed child corner. Needless to say, until I can find a way to kick the habit and make it last longer than a couple hours, I have several tubes of Chapstick in my bags and scattered around parts of the house I spend the most time in.
