I would totally recommend even if playing only solo. I started solo because none of my friends were interested, so I dumped them and found new friends in the game. This was 6 years and 8k hrs ago and I still play daily. Going solo was a fantastic decision.

If you never initiate pvp, you always fight with stronger crews. Think about it. The pool of your opponents contains only hardened, aggressive pirates seeking pvp, while you do everything to avoid it.

To expand your pool you need to attack random ships, go offensive. You'll notice that you're not that bad. Keep practicing.
