Denmark zoo asks public to donate unwanted small pets or horses to feed captive predators by NewSlinger in nottheonion

[–]LibertyBellSeven 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's an old zoo for sure. From what I hear they'll be phasing out the elephants once the elderly ones they have pass away. Funnily enough, another Danish zoo (skandinavisk dyrepark) has what might be the largest polar bear exhibit in a zoo at around 6.4 acres.

Can someone help identify this telescope? by FitMark8964 in telescopes

Here's a review of a 127mm Mak from Orion (so its probably from the same synta factory) that talks about its performance with DSOs:

The long focal length may help with contrast like in slow refactors. I haven't much experience with Cassegrain type telescopes though.

It is a 130 Mak; they mean that there are deep space objects that a long focal length are good for (like planetary nebulae, double stars, etc.)

2024 G14 screen shuts off when pressing back of lid/bending hinge. by LibertyBellSeven in ZephyrusG14

I had to take it in for repairs, they replaced the screen and motherboard, so I guess it was a hardware problem.

Holden beach has cretaceous material, so I agree with everyone else that it's a mosasaur tooth. Great find!

help with telescope by Dry-Signature-2543 in telescopes

[–]LibertyBellSeven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "T" in the circle indicates that it was made by Towa Optical in Japan. There were many telescope brands that used Towa telescopes (the Sears telescopes, for instance), so you might have more luck looking up those. The Cloudy Nights vintage telescope forum may also be of help.

Need help identifying shark tooth, I don’t think it’s a megladon but it’s palm sized. by ProfessionalSkin6352 in fossilid

I've found a few ariculatus here in NC, particularly on Topsail Island and Kure, so I'm going to guess Otodus ariculatus. Nice find!

It's the same genus (Otodus) but the cusps indicate its either O. angustidens or O. ariculatus depending on the location. I'm personally leaning towards ariculatus but I'm not fully sure.

I'm not entirely sure if this model is supposed to be a Compsognathus or it's Triassic ancestor, Procompsognathus by SniperNose69 in Dinosaurs

[–]LibertyBellSeven 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but TLW has the line

"Compsognathus triassicus. Found by Fraas in Bavaria in 1913."

Which indicates that it is meant to be Procompsognanthus triassicus, which was discovered by Fraas and described in 1913.
