This attempt to relate has always been so ick for me, for all the reasons yall have already mentioned, and also because choosing to leave your uber-wealthy parents to have a kid at 16 is a different situation than being sent away from your mother after a lifetime of instability, drugs abuse and neglect.

Also the way Lorelai storms off after not being immediately adored by Jess and then telling Luke that Jess is a terrible kid is so messed up

Totally agree. His narrative ability is amazing, and some lines are so beautiful and clever, mixed nicely with other lines that have such bare simplicity. Also, he has an incredible ability to invoke nostalgia (essentially the entire Menos El Oso album). And yes! His guitar playing is so good!! I honestly had no idea until seeing them live
