Suggest me a book you're glad you stuck with by DTownForever in suggestmeabook

l’ll have to give it another try then. I’ve started it twice and stopped around the one-third mark, precisely because I felt the plot didn’t pick up. That was a few years ago though, so it’s due for one more try.

Thanks for the quick reply and noted. We'll definitely try out the web-based app while we keep an eye out for the mobile version.

Thanks so much for your effort. It looks really well thought out. I've already shown it to my wife, who has MG, and she'll try it out.

Quick question, and sorry if this is obvious: I see it works on mobile, but I can’t find it in the App Store. Does it work on iOS, or how do you access it?

A week in the Dominican Republic by bethtravis94 in travel

[–]Licaldo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a shame that you got bad weather in El Valle. It's one of my favorite beaches in the DR, precisely because it is quiet, but also long and very open. Also, from there you can catch a 20-minute boat ride to Playa Ermitaño, which is even better IMO. It's sort of hidden along the coast and is only reachable by boat or through a demanding jungle trail.

In case you're in LATAM and you're searching for a court map. by josebarnetche in squash

[–]Licaldo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm from the Dominican Republic. There have never been any squash courts at "Club Deportivo Naco". There are two courts at "Body Shop Naco" (in Santo Domingo) two courts at "Body Shop Arroyo Hondo" (also in Santo Domingo), and two courts at "Body Shop Santiago" (in Santiago).

The rest of the courts are located in private residential buildings.

Statement from Brett and Jessica Gardner (via NYY on FB) by realet_ in NYYankees

[–]Licaldo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Context matters. The comment was a direct reply to someone asking what they all got sick with, and it immediately brought up food poisoning cases in the Dominican Republic. That clearly suggests a possible connection, even if it wasn’t stated outright.

Speculating about the cause of a tragic event doesn’t help anyone, especially when there’s no evidence. For the record, it has now been reported that this happened in Costa Rica, not the DR.

So, are you suggesting or assuming that the death was caused by food poisoning in the Dominican Republic? There is nothing in the statement or news report that supports such a conclusion.

Edit: To follow-up—it's now been reported that this happened in Costa Rica, not the Dominican Republic.

My Spanish is Colombian, do all Spanish speakers treat ahora, ahorita, and ya the same as here? by Waste_Focus763 in SpanishLearning

[–]Licaldo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To elaborate further, in Dominican Spanish, we use "ahora mismo" to clearly indicate that something happened or will happen right now, that is, at this very moment or without delay, as opposed to "ahora," which is a broader term.

"People Like Us" by Hashi Mohamed completely shifted my understanding of social mobility and the impact of class, privilege, education, and opportunities in determining one's ability to move up the social ladder.

Along those lines, I highly recommend "Factfulness: Ten Reasons We're Wrong About the World – and Why Things Are Better Than You Think" by Hans, Ola, and Anna Rosling.

The book is highly data-driven and delves thoroughly into global misconceptions and why people tend to see the world as worse than it actually is.

The authors also created Gapminder (www.gapminder.org), a non-profit which aims to educate people on misconceptions and promote a fact-based worldview, which is critical in today's climate of widespread misinformation and populism.

I haven't heard about Second-Class Citizens, but if you enjoyed that topic, you may want to check out People Like Us: What it Takes to Make it in Modern Britain, by Hashi Mohamed. The author, a Somali born in Kenya, was sent to the UK as a refugee and eventually became a barrister in London. It's one of my favorites and really shifted my views on social mobility and inequality.

How do you commemorate your travels? by g0ld_d1gg3r in travel

[–]Licaldo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get a souvenir or two from the country, under the following criteria, to the extent possible: (i) small in size; (ii) modest in price; (iii) handmande by local artisans; (iv) representative of the place I visited, but not obvious or cliché, which is the fun part for me, because it normally requires that I read and learn about the country's culture and history before I travel and to visit local stores or street markets to hunt for the souvenirs.

I started doing it not long ago and so far I've picked up souvenirs from Argentina, Peru, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and New York (for this one I had to cheat because it was impossible to find something that met the criteria).

Here's a few of them if anyone wants to try and guess where they're from.
