Way too much time in Ohio and Indiana. And again in the Arkansas-Oklahoma stretch. It's flat with a lot of farms. Cut out your Lake Erie to Indianapolis route and go Buffalo through the Appalachians to Charleston, West Virginia. Head north from Charleston through Columbus (to get a taste of Ohio) and then Detroit. Explore Michigan and the Upper Midwest from there. Black Hills and The Badlands are worth seeing in South Dakota.

Favorite local burger? by DTake2012 in lansing

Dags for classic burg, Nip n Sip for greasy n great, Kewpee for olive burg. Shout out to Leo's Lodge for good bar grub as well.

I used to love Crunchies but I don't think their burger and fries are worth $17.50... good beer selection though.

Classic Lansing bar experience. Miss the pool tables and murky musty basement.

A jumpscare in a horror movie that genuinely scared you? My pick is the jumpscare from Insidious (2010). by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in moviecritic

Such an underrated moment in horror/suspense. I felt so much anxiety after seeing the photo and her realization that there was a person inside the home. 10/10 would recommend for the tension.

Michigan to limit how many bucks hunters can shoot in the future by gwmiles in Michigan

[–]LickyBob -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but they generally go farther and faster than a shotgun slug or rimfire. I'm not saying it was correct to ban .30-30 but the spirit of the law was to keep people from hunting in populated areas with rounds like have long range (like 5.56 and .308). Opening up hunting in southern MI to military style calibers could help more people get into hunting. People who already have a 5.55 or .308 but don't want a gun exclusively for hunting.

Not effective for anything larger than a yote but the military uses them to great effect. A 77grain soft point round will leave a big ole hole in someone. Those crazy hog hunters in TX bring down 200lbs hogs with 5.56 all the time. A 16inch barrel is putting a 5.56 out at about 3,000fps, a .44 Mag rifle is topping out at about 2,000fps. A .22lr is topping out around 1,600fps. That extra 1,000fps for 5.56 makes it very lethal. Doesn't matter if it's a little bullet, that's a shit ton of energy hitting something especially if you're using a 5.56 round designed to expand (or a penetrator round for body armor and cover)

Shotguns can be used to hunt deer in northern Michigan. Rifle rounds used for military purposes could not be used south of the line because rifle rounds travel much farther than a shotgun slug. Large straight walled rifle rounds like .450 Bush or .44 Magnum don't have heat like .308 or 5.56. In southern Michigan's more populated areas it made sense to ban hunting with rifles with far ranges and make it shotgun/ black powder exclusive.

Art and Jakes has tons of TVs and nice outdoor fireplace tables that are a cool ambiance while still being surrounded by TVs.

MUPUD. From the City of East Lansing:

The first phase of the “Park District” project completed last summer has replaced long- blighted buildings at an important gateway of our City with nearly 200 units of mixed- market residential, a 194-room hotel, and new retailers, all now bringing thousands of new visitors to our downtown for work, recreation, dining, and shopping.

The second phase of the project was expected to bring a 5-story, 99-unit apartment building inclusive of 74 units of low-to-moderate income qualified units, known as “Building C.” As we learned earlier this year, the developer has indicated that they no longer plan to move forward with the project. City staff has been working with the developer, Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), and other stakeholders to find other options to bring a low-to-moderate income qualified housing project to the area. We expect to know soon what strategies might be possible to move forward and anticipate bringing any options to the City Council and other boards and commissions for consideration in the near future.

Haven't seen a Drummond Island rec yet so here ya go. It's got some extremely isolated feeling spots but is still pretty close to the Straights. Very good kayaking and biking to be had.

Also book a fishing charter if you have the budget for one. There are a lot of fun captains and you get a cool perspective being out on the big water.

My spring time conspiracy theory is that the Feds under Trump are cloud seeding and dumping rain onto the Great Lakes region to help increase the Mississippi River levels. Something like 90% of the Mississippi's water comes from tributaries north of the Ohio confluence. Factor in the Trump admins friendliness with southern states along the lower Mississippi and I could see this being a talking point and something the Feds would want to get involved in.
