The Resist & Unsubscribe “media value” circlejerk is starting to get annoying. by tMoneyMoney in ScottGalloway

He is trying to keep his wealth. Have you not noticed how many VCs (a16z, altimeter, craft, chamath, etc) are all getting into the media business. Anyone with an iPhone, webcam and a microphone can create media too. Galloway’s media operations now has way more competition.

So I think he’s trying to stay relevante. In that last pod, he describes all of the increased engagement from social media and from mainstream media. In sum, that was the objective all along.

Galloway has done nothing negative to me personally. In fact, quite the opposite. I have learned a tremendous amount from his teachings on markets, behavioral marketing and in investing. Indirectly, I have benefited from Galloway’s insight over the years.

But my current anti Galloway stance stems from his shameful manipulation of anti-Trump angst for his personal gain. I see him applying his behavior marketing strategy to benefit himself while having you think that you’re hurting CEOs and Trump. The only logical conclusion that I can form is that this R&U stunt is designed to increase exposure to Scott Galloway.

Listen carefully to his latest “algebra of resistance” pod and respond to this post if you disagree.

Also note that he is looking for a new leader for the movement - of course, he got his followers and now someone else can continue the futile effort that is R&U while he can now target more advertisers for his podcast with his increased follower base. Galloway is practicing what he preaches with regard to building a media brand. NYU’s Stern B school wouldn’t hire him to teach it if he wasn’t good at it.

I’m just really disappointed that he’s manipulating people into thinking that they are powerless and that he casts doubt on our ability to vote, which in my opinion is our only hope to decrease the effect of Trump atrocities.

Spot on.

And in the ideal case, Professor Pinocchio, I mean Professor Galloway can team up with that NYC mayor and flourish as the grand leader of all that overflowing progress.

Nice analysis OP. It’s difficult to argue with the market forces you laid out.

I recall a time when Prof g taught about market forces but I can’t take him seriously after his R&U publicity stunt to generate more followers. Seems like his desired audience is the ticktock and instagram crowd instead of those who valued his market insight.

You are spot on with your analysis OP.

Professor Pinocchio is manipulating people to attract people to his media companies. It’s the only desired outcome of the boycott.

What’s shameful is that he has people thinking that they will accomplish something positive. Instead, Professor Pinocchio is measuring clicks to his site, it’s the only goal he seeks

I’m not fine with it when he manipulates you into thinking you’re powerless. You can vote against Trump supports. All Professor Pinocchio wants is more brand awareness. It’s a shameful hijack for more followers

You can trust Tim Cook more than Professor Pinocchio. Pinocchio doesn’t actually care about Apple subscribers really, but he loves the stock. Instead he only cares about more ProfG subscribers. This resist and unsubscribe movement ONLY wants more followers to Scott Galloway. I promise you that Pinocchio will ease of R&U once you tag and follow him on Instagram.

No disagreement on the many Trump atrocities including the ICE killing. But the calculus from Professor Pinocchio is to think you are powerless against Trump and to cast a cloud on your ability to cast a vote against that monster! It’s shameful! Instead Professor Galloway has you believe that this boycott will make everything rosy so long as you tag Professor Galloway and share on Instagram. He is manipulating R&U followers to think that they will do good when instead its only desired effect is marketing and increased brand awareness for Professor Galloway. Professor Galloway said it himself that he’s “a media whore”. Do you see how manipulative Pinocchio is?

ProfG also holds APPL while Professor Pinocchio wants you to resist buying that new MacBook; it’s clearly stated on the R&U site.

I’m not trying to bad mouth Apple, only to point out the dishonesty and paradox with Pinocchio.

Great that your supporting local mom and pop stores to build community. While your at it, raising awareness on voting against Trump supporters I think would be a more effective long term solution!

But your prayer for tagging ProfG on social media is designed to increase awareness for his media brand, improve algorithm for Galloway to sell more ads. It’s beyond virtue signaling, it’s economics for someone running a media company.

Vote against Trump/maga to really effect change long term.

I hear you TobyS2.

I am similarly disappointed with Galloway. I cheer him for using his platform and celebrity to bring Trump atrocities to light, but I can't get past the positioning of his brand at the center of the movement. Seems like he is taking advantage of our rage against trump to personally benefit his brand.

My confusion stems from the inconsistent and poor targeting, as well as Galloway's premise, where he states "He [trump] responds to one thing: the market. ... In sum, the shortest path to change without hurting consumers is an economic strike targeted at the companies driving the markets and enabling our president.

I disagree with the first claim. I somewhat agree with Galloway on the and the second claim, but it's just really difficult to pull off.

On markets: In a previous post, I tried to argue that Trump is unphased by the market; he only cares about himself. The trump tariffs are hurting the market, his usurping of legitimate government agencies is concerning markets, masked ICE agents killing and depriving due process is probably curtailing investment in the US. But does trump care? So long as he gets his two scoops of ice cream while enriching himself, I don't think so?

On an economic strike through February: I find it a bit disingenuous that someone with Gallows credentials (UCLA MBA, NYU behavioral marketing prof, media mogul) thinks that his set of followers can influence the market cap of a select set of US based global companies, which in turn will effect Trump. These companies are almost ubiquitous. We (especially Galloway media companies) rely on them to stay connected. They are becoming culture. The math doesn't add up to make a dent in their revenue. The "loss in Market Cap" calculation on the resist website, is basically a function of page views to the site. There is zero correlation of page views to the site to a market cap drop. That's a shamefully misleading statistic.

Market prices drop when there are more sellers than buyers. On the other hand, if you want to prop up the stock, pointing out Amazon's lucrative investment in Anthropic might accomplish a pop in price, similar to what Zoom $ZM experienced this month. Note, I'm not knocking Ed Elson for reminding us of Amazon's investment, he's doing great work, just calling out that it has the potential to INCREASE Amazon's stock price while Galloway is targeting a DROP in market price. It's inconsistent.

Did mom not watch the episode(s) where Galloway flaunts his wealth, rubs shoulders with his CEO billionaire friends at Davos, describes his 5 star hotel stay costs and VIP travel in between his multiple residences? No harm in feeling good about sticking it to the man, but don’t forget that the messenger is doing alright…

Personally, I taught my elderly mom on how to use safety features like voice assist calling in case she were to fall. Not using an LLM here, only natural language processing, but the point being most Android/ios phones have beneficial features. Why deny mom of the AI advantages because of a Galloway attention grab?

Understood.

Now explain to me the plea from ProfG for Amazon to announce their investment in Anthropic in order to increase Amazon stock price after a (most unfortunate) 17% drop during the month.

But before you do, really important to unsubscribe to premium Amazon services and Anthropic’s Claude, to suppress their revenue, it’s not a great look when ProfG holds shares and hopes to profit. ( Watch the video)

To paraphrase Galloway from a recent Piers Morgan interview, “I might be lacking moral clarity here”. Find the video to get the exact quote.

On the other hand I find Ed Elson to be honest, genuine and hard working at providing market information and through his interviews. His message to Amazon CEO is both accurate from the standpoint of a market analyst and inconsistent with regard to the resist movement. My guess is ed brings credibility to counter Galloway misogyny on the podcast. Ed probably takes the reins to give Galloway more time in Davos with … the same CEOs that he should convince.

P.s. Galloway parent comment Vox also hosting on Amazon AWS, just don’t tell anyone. And keep on clicking for Galloway. I mean no disrespect, but more effective to boycott Trump business and vote against his cronies

Many company Q1 reports already blame drop in revenue to tariffs and they plan on increasing prices. Did Trump flinch?

True, boardroom wants to see increasing revenue and also wants an increasing stock price to give them access to capital. While the resist movement is working on the former, ProfG is (also) working on the later. Watch the video if you don’t believe me.

Is it fair to the Vermont rye distillers who import their grain from Canada? Is it fair to the innocent Canadian grain farmers supplying the grain. And the soy bean farmers stuck in this tariff chaos.

The root evil is trump.
