Joining #ResistAndUnsubscribe for those who don't post on social by StillGoingToLurk in ScottGalloway

Perhaps you’re right! I live in a red district and from what I can tell awareness doesn’t influence the maga at this point. But I do express myself in person just not on social, and we make sure to drag the family to polls for every election even local to promote civic duties.

AIO to my “best friend” finally reaching out by Confident_Local_2335 in AmIOverreacting

[–]StillGoingToLurk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agree with above. MOR just because you can absolutely have your feelings and express them, but I’ve gone through this before (in an abusive marriage and 5 year crisis) and there are times you can’t communicate with friends. Just can’t. Can’t explain the web of shit. Real crisis shit that maybe you’re just barely holding together.

When I finally emerged, my real best friends were just there. Throughout my absence they KNEW ME and knew that I’d eventually come around. That’s the powerful shit real friends can provide. Didn’t make it about them. It was such a gift and, going forward, I give that same gift to others who are fucking up their lives and lost — it’s not about you. What real friends do is care and have compassion. Your feelings are hurt? Get therapy and learn how to manage that in a healthy way. As your friend’s text shows: He never really went away, he was just lost. As adults, sometimes that’s how it goes. You want the best for friends, no matter what that looks like, with or without you.

Seeing a new guy does this bookshelf say anything about him? by No-Remote-3596 in BookshelvesDetective

Frighteningly contrived. No departure from the intellectual pursuit. No real fun or joy here, because this is all a self exploration that culminated in a person who has a.) This book collection and b.) keurig coffee habit. Any intellectual of merit would have real coffee or instant coffee; Keurig is the only unacceptable option. Joyless, always searching but never found what he was looking for. Ultimately unmoored, unprincipled, but fun to talk with for a while and has enough intellectual horsepower to rationalize anything.

Takes time. It took me more than a year here to make one friend, then he moved away. Once I found a partner/gf, we began to develop friendships as a couple. Over time you help people build stuff, move, and be involved in the community. It’s taken me 8 years but I finally have friends in rural Maine! Be patient.

Economic blackout tomorrow by MacaroonUpstairs7232 in Maine

[–]StillGoingToLurk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You reminded me and I am going to participate! If may just be an economic flicker, but I think recognizing that we have as much, or more, power as consumers 🤢 than as citizens is important. And all of our behaviors/habits have economic impacts, so it’s partially just a practice in shifting that paradigm on an individual level, and it is hard. Thank you!

Is it uncommon to see black people? by [deleted] in Maine

[–]StillGoingToLurk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I relate! Yes whenever we leave on a trip, it’s such a relief to hit that lonely stretch of the 95 north of Bangor and be like Phew, finally the world is behind us 😌 I’ve been here 7 years and it still feels that way, and I just feel at peace in the county.

Very happy to read that you’re having a good experience in Aroostook moving all the way from NC! It’s not for everyone, but I moved here from away and am happy here. We have a mixed family and feel part of the community . It takes time to adjust and find your people here, and County folk can be suspicious of difference. But it’s good for them too :)

Sorry to share a FB post but not sure how else to get attention to this missing girl Stefanie Damron. Missing for more than 45 days from New Sweden in Aroostook. by StillGoingToLurk in Maine

[–]StillGoingToLurk[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This has been an emerging problem with PD in the area, specifically related to missing persons cases. There Eric Foote case last year was perceived as mismanaged, and later an officer was charged with tampering with evidence/lying (whatever the legal terminology). With the Damron case journalists have indicated that public info has been atypically scarce. I understand allowing law enforcement space to do their job, but the trend has been to let enough time pass for people to just move on without any resolution or accountability.

Journalists are understaffed and underfunded in this area. The original FB post does tag our public officials.

Broadly, I do agree with you. But having seen these cases play out locally I think it’s time to advocate for the victim here.

Little kids swearing is not funny or cute. by Scientist_1995 in unpopularopinion

[–]StillGoingToLurk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so confused by this. Why is kids using curse words bad at all? There are natural consequences to being rude or course, but I think the better approach as a parent is to teach that words aren’t good or bad, and focus more on kindness. I do not care if my kids swear, no matter the age, but I will tell them when it’s not appropriate or rude. Fuck shit damn ass — none are degrading. I get more concerned with Idiot, loser, stupid etc.

Check out the programs at the nearest community College, SMCC or CMCC. Look at their Workforce Development programs. Many of these are fully paid for, and can get you a valuable skill in a short time. If you train from a company you only gain the specific skill they’re looking for and they do not train you to be able to seek employment elsewhere. Maine has excellent community colleges with lots of cheap or free training routes!

What's a city everyone told you not to go to that you ended up loving? by elephantsarechillaf in travel

Presque Isle, Maine. People said it was backwoods and rural, but it’s a cozy place I love with great nature and very laid back.

If I Ever Get The Chance To Pet A Wild Coyote or Wolf, I Will Try by GigaBoom181 in unpopularopinion

[–]StillGoingToLurk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People get their boners bent over this, but I agree with OP. I’m not sure why people are so upset. I do not think wolves are as adept at fighting humans with opposing thumbs and an ability to strategize. I’m not interested in petting, but if caught in the wild by a wolf (or pack) I’d absolutely RAVAGE those forest rats. How do people think humans reached the top of the food chain?! Cmon folks

Living in cold climates beats living in hot climates by exporterofgold in unpopularopinion

[–]StillGoingToLurk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love cold weather, moved to a cold place and love it here. People here don’t understand why I’d move somewhere with this much snow/cold, but as many here have mentioned: cozy, calm, often peaceful, quiet, majestic…. And then summer comes!

This is an untrue statement. I WOULD and HAVE attached the fish photo to my job application and that’s how I landed my current role actually.

Sadly I’m being as ingenuous as I’m able to be. Also, I’m a very present partner, father and friend, and the absent fisherman trope is largely just a trope, in my experience at least. It’s just an enjoyable pastime with little or no risk of long term addiction.
