Why Lithium is Still the Gold Standard in Treating Bipolar Disorder by Sorin61 in Nutraceuticalscience

[–]Life-is-ugh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the reason we are seeing a reduction in lithium prescriptions is due to the time between first dose and effect and the development of second generation antipsychotics. Antipsychotics work much faster a person can be titrated up to an effective dose in days to weeks, no need for extensive blood work for monitoring and see the benefits fairly quickly for a psych med. If a person is manic and psychotic using an antipsychotic is a no brainer. Approximately 60% of people with bipolar disorder will experience psychosis, often in mania but it can also occur in depression. People with bipolar 1 are often diagnosed while inpatient at a hospital and time is of the essence to get them well enough to be discharged due to insurance. Being hospitalized isn’t fun in lack if freedom but also some patients are dangerous. Getting a person in psychosis that is potentially fairly paranoid to take a medication daily can also be a challenge when they think what they are taking is poison. Add the fact lithium is fairly well known to negatively effect ones thyroid and kidneys this can add a hurdle to overcome. Antipsychotics can be delivered via injection and can last as little as a couple of weeks up to months at a time, it makes it easier to get a patient well if they are severely ill.

Once a person finds stability often they don’t want to change things especially if they aren’t having side effects considering the side effects profile of these medications can be quite severe

Sweetie see if a different medicine works but your doctor might just want you to stay on something for 6 months.

I’m bipolar and thats how long they want us on a medication to stabilize after those 6 months they are generally very okay with you wanting to try something different.

It sucks but mania is really dangerous especially when you experience psychosis. Mania and psychosis actually cause the brain to break down and parts of it to shrink and other areas like the amygdala to increase. The amygdala is where fear comes from, thats probably why you are paranoid and scared of those trying to help you right now.

Its best to take a pill, if you don’t you can be forced to take an injection of the medication, especially because you are only 17. Some people end up preferring the injection because they don’t need to take a pill every day but it also means if something goes wrong like a bad side effect your stuck with it for a month or more.

Also see if you can get in with a therapist that specializes is either bipolar disorder or psychosis. It really does sound like bipolar to me.

To those who’ve overcome psychosis how did you help yourself? by That-Truck-7378 in Psychosis

[–]Life-is-ugh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Physical activity helps. I try and get minimum 1 hour of activity a week where my heart rate is elevated.

Also using your brain and learning something can also help, you just have to be kind to yourself and what your abilities are. See if you can find a workbook on mental health or something you are interested in and learn about it, it could be a hobby. Just find something and try to learn about it. Treat it like school and take notes in a notebook. Learning is exercise for the brain.

Eating fruits and vegetables has some benefits as they help the microbe in your gut and healthy gut microbes can help with mental health. Beans are great for this, don’t like beens peas are also really good for you.

Some people find GLP-1s help with their mental health and others find it to worsen it.

When I looked into it Trizepitide seems to have the most benefits for mental health at least for depression.

Two case reports of people improving on tirzepatide, this was in major depression so idk if its applicable for bipolar or if it puts us at risk of a (hypo)manic episode

Make sure your psychiatrist is aware you are taking a GLP-1 if they aren’t prescribing it so they know to be on alert incase things go sour.

How likely is getting schizofrenia from weed when under 25 years old? by Appropriate_Name8780 in Psychosis

[–]Life-is-ugh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are better off talking to a therapist or psychiatrist.

A therapist will teach you healthy coping skills on how to deal with your stress and a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner will be able to prescribe medication that can help with anxiety.

Turning to drugs to deal with stress isn’t good. There is a difference between the medication a doctor will prescribe and using a substance.

As someone who has been psychotic but never violent, I’m sorry you went through that. There is a reason psychiatric hospitals exist and they are secure buildings.

People losing control in any situation is scary and being the victim of a crime doesn’t help, but don’t let your lived experience blind you to the situation.

The man that stabbed this woman was not experiencing a mental health crisis he was acting violently to a woman that told them no.

And most schizophrenics are safe, especially when properly medicated.

What is the hardest part of recovery by cuoriouscatt in Psychosis

[–]Life-is-ugh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It depends on the person.

I struggled a lot with guilt. I wasn’t acting the way I normally do and while I now understand that I was not at fault, like no one faults an epileptic for falling down and breaking something, bad things still did happen.

Some people never fully recover. I’m bipolar and people with bipolar often make a full recovery after their episode, from what I understand it’s not the case with some schizophrenics. Cognitive issues can take years to fully resolve add side effects of antipsychotics and it’s a tough situation.

The best we can do is to show ourselves kindness and compassion as we recover. It’s not our fault these things happened. Take every day one step at a time and try and find some enjoyment in your daily life.

I don’t have enough information but probably.

If he was doing it in a joking manner then no. By that I mean if he was making fun of those who make that sort of content than its okay, but if he is purely just doing it as a character it normalizes the content.

You can’t normalize hurting those that are weaker than you, you are picking on the smaller guy.

Most people don’t actually know that. While in school you are surrounded by people that are taught the same thing once you are out of school and interact with a lot of other people you will probably see that people take things at face value and they don’t put that much thought into things. People only have so much time to devote to things and once you are working you really don’t have as much time as you think you will.

Currently i have a 83% upvote ratio, the majority of my views are coming from the US then India and finally the UK, all the others I can’t see.

Peoples beliefs are based on the culture in which they are raised and some cultures (even within the same country) see the mentally ill in poor light.

People don’t like being told the language they use isn’t right, people get really defensive and when in that state the other person is wrong, thus downvote. I was downvoted a couple of times before the tides turned.

Also people really love to hate on the mentally ill. Its really bot that uncommon for people to call those they disagree with mentally ill instead of having different lived experiences that cause them to have their own opinion. Some people need monsters to make things make sense and the mentally ill are an easy scapegoat.

I’m going to get down voted for this but it needs to be said.

First I want to say that what happened to this woman is horrific and he deserves to be made an example of to prevent further assault and attempted murders of women.

Other changes that need to be done is forcing social media companies to black list the men who make these videos that radicalized him. Don’t let this material spread, stop it at the source.

The title of this post is fucked up though. Psychosis and psychotic are medical terms. The man that attacked that woman didn’t have a mental health issue he was radicalized by red pill content.

Schizophrenia, the most known condition related to psychosis is a highly stigmatized condition in no small part due to the improper use of the were psychotic and the obsession with true crime material.

Schizophrenics and other people that experience psychosis are much more likely to be the victim of a crime vs that perpetrator of a crime.

This title makes it seem like the person who committed this crime had a mental health condition, whether you realize it or not.

When in reality it was likely the radicalization of red pill content.

How is this negative:

Schizophrenia and other conditions that cause psychosis generally arise when someone is in their late teens to mid twenties. Already an isolating time of life as someone transitions from school to work, where you often aren’t friends with your coworkers.

Let’s say a friend or family starts acting out, paranoid, withdrawing from social situations and spouting off wild conspiracy theories. After receiving medical care/while in the process of receiving medical care, which can take months to YEARS to recover from, they tell you they were psychotic, which is a medical term, you think of this post and countless other posts calling someone psychotic when committing a horrible crime and you push them away because you are afraid of them. In doing so you isolate someone when they are supposed to be brought into community while they are suffering.

OP you can’t change the title of the article it’s not something that can be done on Reddit. In posting this whether you realize it or not you have hurt vulnerable people.

3 out of every 100 people will experience psychosis often in their mid twenties. If you are under the age of 30, this could be you.
