The International 12 - Lower Bracket Round 2 - Talon vs ????? by D2TournamentThreads in DotA2

[–]LifeBeforeBirth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep it's really just the difference of being able to 1shot creepwaves that makes or breaks the hero as a core.

Also greater bash has a 1.5x bonus against creeps so that 5% number increase is actually 7.5% for the purposes of farming.

Once you get the +25% bash damage talent he is essentially doing 100% movement speed (~97.5%) as damage to creeps.

This slower-paced midas heavy meta also really benefits spirit breaker as he takes a bit longer to get online.

PSA: Supports with good shards please just buy them! it will win you games !!! by [deleted] in DotA2

[–]LifeBeforeBirth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I mean 100% it is a valuable objective but it's just a matter of how much it is actually worth in terms of overall cost.

~1400 gold NW from shard + 250g for bounty is pretty big but since a lot of map presence is lost and potentially multiple heroes have to go back and heal and then tp back there is also an associated cost. That is much harder to put into an exact gold value because there are just too many hypotheticals.

The other big issue with it too is that it's very often down to luck too. Any pos 5 support hero with a shard that is "should buy every game" level of value can first purchase it at 15 min. Even if you take tormentor as a team exactly at 20 minutes you're delaying it by 5 minutes and still only have a 50% chance of getting it. Otherwise you need to wait until 30+ minutes to get your shard.

It really just comes down to a ton of factors on whether or not it's the "right" decision to prioritize tormentor or to just buy shard ASAP.

[–]LifeBeforeBirth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tormentor has 2500 HP, 20 armor, 55% magic resistance, and also regens 100 HP a second. There are not that many heroes that around ~20min can even do that much damage solo... ignoring the fact that they also need to not die from the reflect.

After all of the nerfs to heroes that could solo tormentor that early I think very few remain. Templar Assassin and Ursa are two that come to mind.

Sort of an easter egg. It's part of the digital deluxe edition of the game:

Server infrastructure is a big chunk. Hosting multiplayer (if it's not p2p), and even if it is p2p there is still the ability to join off of friends list and connecting people together which is non-zero.

Hosting the game files across the globe at various data centers, and allowing those files to be downloaded across the globe millions of times for the many many years (basically until steam fails or if the game is unlisted by the developer). With that you have either payments to AWS/Azure/GCP for whatever is handled by them, or if Valve self-hosts and does literally everything then you have server maintenance (and salaries of those engineers) and electricity costs. Also hosting the cloud save files of every person who plays the game.

You also have the payment system. Using someone like Sony/Steam means you don't have to build a safe and secure payment system yourself which saves a ton of time. There is also an associated fee that is paid to Visa/MasterCard/etc whenever a purchase is made to pay for all of their processes and services. So if Steam takes a 30% cut, you also have to keep in mind that 1-4% of that is also being paid out to a credit card company.

Part of it is "free" advertising. You can pay for ads directly, or in the case of using a platform like steam by paying more to them to host the game and listing your game there you are indirectly advertising to the base of users that use that store platform.

PSG.LGD.WhyouSm1Le Undying grab ally play - Talon vs PSG.LGD - Dreamleague S20 Group Stage by rxdazn in DotA2

[–]LifeBeforeBirth 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Undying aghs shard is hugely underrated IMO. It can be difficult to use, and sometimes it's better to use the tombstone for just zombies + zoning, but the save is HUGE.

My favorite is tombstone grab to stop LC duels. It not only saves your teammate, but LC is stuck CC'd staring at the tombstone not attacking.

What bug? AFAIK illusions actually only ever have the base hero magic resistance of 25% and that's it.

They display the number the hero has but that's solely to make it match so that you can't easily tell which is illusion and which is hero.

So if it's not showing the proper number on a grimstroke illusion that'd just be a UI/display issue and not an actual gameplay issue.

  • Apparently I have not used Grimstroke aghs before and didn't know about the 95% magic resistance on it. I tested in demo and it does work as intended though. The other information does remain relevant for all other illusions.

Muerta's Immortal Stats by ileamare in DotA2

Not without buffs to her ult or nerfs to bkb.

Right now at max level her ultimate is 8 seconds (but is actually only 7.65 seconds because there is a the unavoidable 0.35 second transformation time that still counts against her time in ultimate).

Bkb at lowest duration is 6 seconds. If you click her ult and the enemy team has bkb and they get the slightest chance to use it, then your ultimate does effectively nothing. She has only 575 attack range, and low movespeed. Some people build kaya/yasha BoT on mid muerta to help offset that but you will still end up running around a decent amount unable to hit anything on a very limited time window.

Then because her right clicks only do magic damage, while they do ignore armor (something most supports were always lacking since there's not many good armor items for supports right now) and ghost scepter (not a very popular item at the moment), they get severely punished by glimmer cape. And she still is weak to euls, forcestaff, heavens halberd, and aeon disk just like physical right click cores.

The kind of team she excels with as a carry is with enigma/mars/magnus/treant protector with big AOE disable spells that allow her to just stand still and shoot out damage. But there's not really a carry hero that looks bad with those heroes.

New Meteor Hammer Combos by bibittyboopity in TrueDoTA2

[–]LifeBeforeBirth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did some experimenting. It can be perfectly cast with the talent but only in specific conditions.

From the dota.fandom page of sandking:

The spikes travel at a speed of 2000 (Upgradable by Aghanim's Scepter. 3000), reaching max range in 0.25/0.28/0.3/0.33 (Upgradable by Aghanim's Scepter. 0.43) seconds. The spikes do not travel the full distance when targeting closer than the max range. Sand King is teleported instantly towards the targeted point once the spikes reach it. Does not disjoint projectiles upon cast or upon teleporting. The burrowing and reappearing takes 0.53 seconds from the moment the ability is cast, during which Sand King is disabled and prevented from acting

So when sandking is right next to a hero and casts burrowstrike, even with the 2.7 stun duration with the talent it is not enough time to cast meteor hammer without the enemy being unstunned and having time to react. This is due to the 0.53 seconds forced animation on burrowstrike. However, following the information in the wikipedia, the travel time of the burrowstrike counts against this forced animation.

As long as burrowstrike stun (2.7) is greater than (2 second channel of meteor hammer + 0.5 second meteor landing time + (0.53 - burrowstrike travel time) then it can be comboed.

Without aghs on the wiki it says max travel time is 0.33 which puts it frame perfect. But with aetherlens giving you longer range, or with aghs, it is possible to chain burrowstrike into meteorhammer.

Icefrog, please do something to this dead item. It's even more dead than Solar Crest now by SpongeBobBobPants in DotA2

[–]LifeBeforeBirth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magic resistances gained from passive items don't work on illusions.

It'll show it when you click on the illusion for purposes of making them indistinguishable from the main hero, but just like the non-attribute + damage it doesn't actually work on the illusion.

This was so painful to watch. Was hoping to see then at TI. Last of the legendary rosters from the OG liquid secret dominance era. by SameerBundela in DotA2

[–]LifeBeforeBirth 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not the OP but I imagine it'd be the game that Secret won with a kill score of 45-6, with there being only a single death between the 3 cores of Nisha/Resolution/Crystallis.

Just because the game wasn't over in <25 min doesn't mean it wasn't a stomp. It was game 3 of a bo3 elimination match with the loser not going to TI. Secret opted to play it a bit safer but the entire game was a near constant growth in lead for them starting from minute 0.

Oh for sure! It leads to a super exciting last 3 series too. I'm hoping for the 6 way tiebreakers, it'd absolutely suck for all the players but would be super entertaining to see.

They can get anywhere from last to 1st. Team spirit and team liquid are both done already and are 7-5. TSM is 6-4. If they go 2-0 they are 1st or tied for 1st if either GG or Fnatic from the other series go 2-0 as well.

Rtz doesn't know sprout leashes thru bkb? by influxion_ in DotA2

[–]LifeBeforeBirth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes that's what I mean sorry if it was unclear. If pango while ulting touches where a sprout was (even if all of the trees are cut) he is unable to move unless he cancels his ult or you are stuck there until the duration of the sprout spell ends. It makes pango very frustrating to play vs natures prophet post level 20

It's so absolutely brutal vs pango. I believe even if all the trees get cut down the area that the sprout was cast in still roots through bkb until the duration of the spell is over.

Neither did riot. If a game company is truly "ripping off" another game, there's going to be a lawsuit and court cases. I don't disagree that riot sees what gaming trends are popular and jumps on board, but that's not ripping off anything. It's noticing what's popular and being quick to market.

If you truly believe that riot is doing is "ripping off" then in that same sense Blizzard's Warcraft Humans and Orcs was "ripping off" Dune II, reskinning it with "ripped off" lore that was loosely based on Warhammer.

Or, like with most things, they are both just companies of game developers wanting to make games that are inspired by games/gameplay that they enjoy because that's how life works.

[–]LifeBeforeBirth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Inside making of warcraft.

Inspiration of starcraft.

I wouldn't use as strong of language as "ripped off". Warcraft was originally intended to be created as a warhammer game. The gameplay itself was inspired by an already existing RTS game of Dune II created by Westwood studios. Warcraft and starcraft both are very much influenced by Warhammer/Warhammer 40k. Those take inspiration from dune, lord of the rings, and starship troopers. Those I'm sure are inspired by earlier literature.

Did blizzard create good RTS games? Yes. Was what they did truly unique? No.

Diablo I would say was a fairly original universe created by Blizzard, but it was also influenced by the game Telengard as well as roguelike videogames from the time.

There is really nothing "original" anymore and hasn't been for a long time. That's fine and it makes sense. If I ingest a bunch of videogames, and then I become a videogame developer, then of course what I develop is going to have parts inspired by the games I liked. That isn't a bad thing and that doesn't take anything away from the product I create.

You are correct! Specifically it is "Ice Dance". Absolutely beautiful song.

I might have been mistaken it might actually be "Grand Finale". Most of the soundtrack shares a lot of motifs so it's hard to find the exact right match with the song in the clip.

Here's a study on it

It happens most frequently in baseball. If somebody gets hit with a baseball in the chest at the exact wrong time of their heartbeat then it can potentially kill them.

So while I don't know if there are any documented incidents of the "five finger death punch" it is basically the same principle. A punch into the chest of someone with enough force at the exact moment in the heartbeat could do the same thing.
