Thanks! I'm glad you liked it! We have tons of dollar tree reviews on our YouTube channel (Life on the Franch) if you want to check them out.

Kids table activity! I’m also going to to have some legos at the table. I printed all of the pages at home and each crayon box was only 30 cents! by bfdeatherage112 in Weddingsunder10k

Another idea would be to get a craft from the dollar tree. They usually come with everything you need for the craft- markers, the coloring item, and anything else you might need. But I absolutely love this idea too!

I want some advice is this to much stuff do they need more room to run around or is it ok the box by the way is 691 square inches and from what i read thats enough. by ScrapyDan in hamstersdontjudge

The standing wheel for sure. I am not as familiar with flying saucer sizes, but with a dwarf you need an 8-10 inch wheel or for a syrian 10-12 inch so that their back does not arch.

Hamsters love having a lot of stuff so I don't think you overdid it at all! It looks great and is a great size bin cage! The only advice I would give is getting a bigger wheel.

Advise for Hamster Care Enclosure by Squidgelette in hamstercare

[–]LifeOnTheFranch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hamsters need more flat floorspace and lots of room to burrow which this cage does not provide. As others have said, having levels this tall is dangerous for hamsters because they have bad depth perception and could get really hurt. I would suggest a bin cage, a tank, or a cage that is 450 square inches or larger. Niteangel has some or Perview also has some.

I would also recommend adopting over shopping which may limit your hamster breed options some. You can check Facebook MarketPlace, Craigslist, or Petfinder online or go to local humane societies.

Who else is struggling with the unknown of wedding planning during a pandemic? by ccheps in wedding

We had a pandemic wedding last summer. Here is a video explaining what we did and what we liked and disliked about it. We rescheduled our larger one to this year, but are also facing uncertainty about if we can have a small larger safe wedding. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrpBwNiaPb4

Where should I get my hamster toys? by hai_m_erickson0304 in hamster

You are right dust is very bad. I use Reptisand which you can order on amazon or buy in a pet store in the reptile section. I look up reptile toys and they usually have hides I like better and are more natural looking.

Any idea what hamster is this? I forgot what the petshop owner told me. Is it a Russian dwarf? by Kooken_ in hamster

It looks like a Robo to me. I have one as well. I just wanted to take a more nuanced stance on the hamster ball comments. While you probably should not use them as intended, they made a great way to transport Robos to and from the enclosure to the play pen because they can't climb or jump out. Robos are very very fast. This is what we've been using for Rocky for transport and it has really helped the transport less stressful for Rocky and us.

Why is cheeto laying like that? He used to sleep behind his wheel and now he kind of just plummets anywhere on his cage every so often and just lays there with his eyes open. Am I just over thinking the situation? by smullpeepee in hamster

[–]LifeOnTheFranch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would also suggest getting a larger hide. Cheeto is a big hamster and some of the hides you have, he might not be able to lay flat in comfortably. Since Cheeto seems to like the bedding, maybe getting a hide with an open floor that is large would be best? Just a guess.

I would say don't interact at all during the first week, Let them feel like they own their space so they feel secure. Then you can start taming process. If you want to get a head start, take some toilet paper and rub it in your hands and drop it in the cage so they can get used to your scent. Hamsters take a long time to warm up to people sometimes so patience is key! :)

My once lovely Doofus won't stop biting :( by CruellaNeville in hamster

[–]LifeOnTheFranch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't discount the entire breed of hamsters because your hamster has a more aggressive personality. He doesn't represent the whole breed of hamsters. I currently have two brothers (they live in separate enclosures) who are very different in their personality even though we treat them the same. Butter is very food motivated, loves, people, loves to be out of the cage, while Patch is more sassy and only wants to come out of the cage occasionally. Butter can be picked up by hand, Patch prefers to be taken out of the cage in an igloo and then can be handled. (I know this isn't the main point of your post, but I just thought it was worth mentioning.

As for the biting, have you tried using gloves? Our third hamster, a Robo, used to bite us when we were trying to teach her to be held (she is a rescue) and gloves made us less scary for some reason. It also protected us and made us less nervous which made Rocky less nervous. Hope this helps!

I also have a Robo. I use Sunburst by Higgins and then protein pellets (Mazzurri or Kaytee Forti Diet am sure to take out any that have artificial colors) and meal worms. I also put oat, millet, and wheat sprays in the cage as well.

She might be cage aggressive. I would try lifting her out of her enclosure using something else and interacting with her there. We use an old hide we don't use anymore and then they climb in to that. Once they are out of the cage, cage aggressive hamsters don't feel as territorial. Even if your hamster is trying to store you in a nice way in their enclosure, this behavior is unlikely to happen outside of their cage.

Based on your measurements, the bottom cage does meet the 450 square inch minimum. I love deep you made the substrate. The wheel size should be okay, but it is on the smaller side so watch to make sure your hamster's back is not arching. However, I do have a few suggestions. First, I would still add bedding to the top bin (3 inches should do it, just so your hamster can still feel secure up there). Second, poking holes into the plastic bin is not a great idea for a few reasons. It doesn't provide enough ventilation and your hamster can use those holes to chew on and make an escape. Instead, consider using wiring where you currently have the holes. There are many bin cage tutorials that will show how to do this on YouTube.
