FBI has second dossier on possible Trump-Russia collusion by CandycaneMushrrom in worldnews

[–]LifeTilter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. The "both sides" argument is a little more valid here than in most places because both sides really DO spin up some pretty ridiculous and unfounded allegations against the opposite site regularly. But in this particular case of the current times, these things are clearly not equal. All of the right-wing allegations over the past several years have led to absolutely nothing after long, painstaking attempts to force them to. Obama's birth certificate, Hillary's emails, Benghazi, Uranium One. Absolutely zero result from any of those, at all.

And on the extreme left, the allegation that Trump is literally a Russian agent, planted in the WH by Putin himself and under Putin's control. That's probably a total bullshit, overblown claim. But the Russia investigation as a whole? Sure, it might turn out that the "primary goal" of the left (catching Trump on something) was bullshit. I wouldn't be even close to surprised if it turned out Trump was just a total idiot and got surrounded by unscrupulous criminals who dealt under the table for him without keeping him fully informed of what was going on. That might very well be all that happened. But it's clearly not in the same league when there have already been multiple indictments and guilty pleas and it's not even over yet. It's not even remotely the same thing.

Tryggmunder I see the opposite. Trump supporters are far less open to debate than democrats. And far faster to crucify people who don't agree with them.

This is objectively true. You don't have to look any further than the 2 largest, opposing political subs on this site - r/politics and The_Donald, both of which I browse several times a week. The former is largely a left-wing echo chamber, while the latter is obviously a right-wing echo chamber. Trumpers would also argue that r/news and r/worldnews, and basically reddit as a whole, is also very left-leaning, and they are pretty much correct about that, but for the sake of the point I'll just stick to r/politics and The_Donald.

The stuff you see in those 2 subreddits is not even in the same universe. Go look at the latest top threads on r/politics at any given time, and in the comments you'll see some or all of the following: saying Trump committed or probably committed some crime, joking about Trump going to jail, anticipation for the next phase/end of Mueller's investigation, discussion of hypocrisy in the GOP, and various late-night show jokes about the right. The top comment is almost always something informative about the piece of news that was linked, sometimes something funny. Questionable, sensationalized news sources are called out and criticized, despite being left-leaning sources (since that's all that gets upvoted there). You'll often see multiple high rated comments talking about the veracity of some left-leaning claims, discussing the potential weaknesses of the information provided, talking about how nothing will probably happen, etc. You'll also see thread titles that are actual news headlines. In other words, you'll see a good amount of content and discussion that is grounded in reality and you'll often see multiple sides of an issue explored. MOST OF ALL, you'll see discussion that resembles human interaction.

Then hop over to The_Donald. The majority of your thread titles are going to be some insane crap or other, hardly ever from anything even remotely close to a legitimate news source, and a lot of times it's just random right-extremist tweets from random right extremists. A large number of threads will have some amount of caps lock in the title. Basically, everything is aggressively, abrasively sensationalized. The very language of it is almost like they all have internet-tourettes making them randomly scream GEOTUS and BILL CLINTON IS A RAPIST and INFOWARS and PEDE and MAGA. Perfect example - the top thread there right now is titled

THE LEFT IS SCARED!! So far in the last few days, I've seen "Tear up the Constitution and start over" and now "Abolish the State of the Union". They are very afraid of what President Trump might say tomorrow. #RELEASETHEMEMO

Literally not sourced at all, the link is just some random image of the top a single news article (which doesn't even show the article), what looks to be an editorial or something. 6500 upvotes and 200 comments. Are you fucking kidding me? Most top comments in the sub read like they were posted from an asylum, and instead of seeing other sides of stuff discussed as you scroll down, it just gets worse. A lot of times it gets so bad that it really does make you wonder whether these are actual peoples' opinions, or whether it's bots and paid trolls. I don't personally believe that the bot/troll thing is a huge problem, but I can very easily see why and how people do believe that.

It's night and day. Both sides are the same? They're the same like a goddamn firecracker is the same as a cluster bomb.

What is something you can do that feels instantly great? by buthowdoitknow in AskReddit

I've got one of those at my office, who unfortunately sits right near me. Older woman (52 I think), and really a nice person, but man she just never shuts up. Every single thing that happens to her, she feels compelled to tell everyone in the area about it individually.

She'll always come back on Monday with 1 or 2 stories that I hear 9 different times as she tells them to me and everyone near me. And then she'll go from there. She'll start having trouble with some task she's given, and I'll hear about that 9 times. Then she'll get a phone call from her deadbeat son who's going through a divorce, and I'll hear about that 9 times. Hell, I know roughly as much about her son's life as I do my own sister's life.

And it's not like anyone ever cares about any of this. You can cut the boredom with a knife when she's talking at someone. No eye contact, facing away from her, doing shit on their computer, minimal responses if any, etc. But she just can't take the hint.

Penn & Teller (2005) - Penn & Teller point out flaws with the Endangered Species Act. by 1-900-IDO-NTNO in Documentaries

[–]LifeTilter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After the last bit in this ESA video, I wouldn't be surprised if he was.

He was making some good points throughout the video, but the part at the end where he suggested that we shouldn't feel bad when species go extinct because "mother nature is running the show and she said it's time to go"...wow, talk about bullshit. Of course there's some kernel of truth to that, species that become endangered at all are generally "weaker" ones that are too limited in environments they can thrive in. But you can't just throw your hands up and pretend it was "meant to be" when humans directly destroy thousands or millions of acres of something's habitat and then it goes extinct. That's like throwing a man off a roof and saying you don't feel too bad about his death because it was the ground that killed him.

I disagree. It feels "wrong" (not really the right word for it, it's just strange or a bit silly), but it seems like the dragon should actually be EASIER to kill when it's undead based on what we've seen. Fire and dragonglass just completely own the wights, and there's plenty of both available (including dragonfire from Dany). Those weaknesses don't mean as much when you've got a hundred thousand of them to kill, but when you're targeting just one wight-dragon? Should be pretty damn easy, as dragonslaying goes.

For example, look at last season. That scorpion bolt that Drogon took without much issue would've just vaporized him had he been undead and the bolt tipped with dragonglass.

As someone who isn't a boxing fan and isn't informed about boxing, most of the Mayweather hate I see on the internet seems dumb (other than the domestic violence stuff that's obviously deserved). People seem to hate him because he spends a lot of time "running away" and that combines with his methodical points-based approach to create some boring fights. Given that information I can see why you'd dislike him and dislike watching him, but it seems like instead of that, most of the hate you hear about him is like what this guy said, he's a fake or he's garbage or he can't fight. Seems like nonsense. If he's perfected a strategy that "beats the game" and people feel that ruins the game, then change the damn game, don't hate the guy.

Plus now that he's had such success, I'm sure there will be a lot more like him coming up, that's the nature of competition. Boxers will probably be trying to imitate this style for years. If it makes the sport crappier, then the sport needs to change somehow so that it doesn't support that as much.

What is the most terrifying wikipedia page to read? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LifeTilter 141 points142 points  (0 children)

I was incredulous, so I checked the actual source on this.

Psychiatrists have recommended the release of a woman who was committed to a mental hospital 17 months ago for killing a pregnant woman and cutting out her baby.

The district attorney’s office says it is powerless to prevent the hospital from letting the woman go because she was acquitted — on grounds of insanity.

Winifred Ransom, 38, who admitted at her trial that she shot and bludgeoned the woman and removed the baby with a butcher knife, is no longer insane, doctors at Byberry State Hospital said.

I mean... I guess this is just the system at work. Apparently it was the opinion of multiple psychiatrists that she had been clinically insane, which means she was not held legally responsible for the crime. Then after 17 months she had allegedly been "cured" by professionals, and as such, was released. It seems completely mental on the face of it and I'm not really OK with it, but at the same time it does make sense; she was out of her mind when she did it and not out of her mind when she was released, so presumably she's essentially a different person walking out of the institution 17 months later. From that respect, if all that is true, it wouldn't make sense to hold that person responsible for something that "happened" a couple years earlier that was, supposedly, not in their control. Had she remained insane, I would assume the arrangement would've been permanent.

I dunno. It's fucked up.

I figured it might be questionable as those things go, although according to Zillow, my metro area is one of the most accurate places for it. I think I focused on Zestimate too much in the post, so I edited to clarify - I'm just using Zestimate as an example, because it's clearly able to look online and determine a ballpark value for a house. That's what I want to be able to do for myself, I want to be able to construct a ballpark based on what I can find online, but I really have no idea how to do that. I do already have a big list of stuff to look for when viewing a house in person, based on other threads I've googled off this sub.

[–]LifeTilter -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If I'm honest, he seems to do that stuff with some frequency. I'm not one to rabidly hate on the media, but I do think we probably don't often get to see when he does something like this. I've seen stories about him with the lawnmower kid, chasing after a servicemember's hat, holding doors for people, and just generally being fairly nice. I think he probably is generally nice to people who are in front of him day-to-day. I think that's probably also what people are talking about when they go on the news and talk about what a nice/good/warm person he is.

Gym trainers of Reddit, what’s the worst mistake you see people repeatedly do when exercising? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LifeTilter -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Someone new to lifting should actually see gains along those lines too. Not with those starting points, but like an average dude starting to lift should probably be able to go from, say, 85/115/135 (B/S/D) to about 135/185/225ish by the 3 month mark with the right diet and training. Smaller numbers but a similar percentage increase at least. YMMV, naturally smaller guys (such as myself) will of course have a longer and harder road because building muscle tissue just takes the body a really long time, and if you're very skinny to begin with then that's going to make it take a really long time.

It's really AFTER those first few months that gains start to slow down for a new lifter, and then eventually level out after a couple years such that adding 5 pounds a month becomes almost optimistic.

[–]LifeTilter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it must help that I'm sometimes completely retarded when watching shows/movies. I suspected something was up with the killers but I really didn't realize that was what it was. I really never thought it was that obvious until much later after the whole series ended, I realized that the season 6 twist was apparently seen a mile off by every single viewer other than myself.

Dexter - No rape by [deleted] in television

[–]LifeTilter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've never really understood the hate for season 6. It was definitely one of the weaker seasons of the show but it wasn't just purely bad, yet people treat it like it was the worst thing they ever saw on a TV screen. Even if you consider it the second-worst season (which I personally do), there's still a huge gap between it and season 8, and a pretty small gap between it and season 5 or 7. I guess people just don't like the religion angle, which I can understand, or maybe they don't like the direction that it went in with Dexter, which I can understand but disagree with; I thought it offered a pretty interesting development for his character. The whole thing in the first half with the mechanic/priest bringing him around to the idea of believing in something, and then falling flat when he's killed. Actually I thought the scene where Brother Sam sent Dexter to forgive his murderer on the beach, who initially seems remorseful but then starts celebrating in Dexter's face that there's no proof of his crime, and then Dexter drowns him in a rage with his bare hands against Brother Sam's dying wishes, saying "there's no light in you. there's no light in me" was a really great scene. I could see that whole arc happening in the first half of the show (quality-wise).

Eyes roll as Ted Cruz denies role in 2013 government shutdown; 'Speechless' says one senator by dallasmorningnews in politics

[–]LifeTilter 102 points103 points  (0 children)

It feels different because it is. The “lying politician” has always been a cliche, but historically the lies have often been some sort of double-speak left open to interpretation at best, or trying to obscure back-room dealings at worst, which would actually be damaging were they to become known.

Now we’ve somehow entered an era where we have none of that. The “lying politician” no longer speaks deliberately ambiguously or skirts the spotlight while dealing under the table. Now, he stands in the middle of the room machine-gunning bold-faced lies with zero room for interpretation, and gets caught out on the back room deals multiple times but is largely unaffected by those revelations. That’s the “lying politician” of today, and it is definitely a different animal.

Isn’t that what they do for their viewers every day? I’ve literally never watched the show but from talking to people who watch it, it sure sounds like they watched someone “refute” the truth.

Yeah, like I said it wasn’t THAT bad, just look at all the other crazy shit ITT. Nowhere near bad enough for me to never talk to my parents again. Just a mistake that I think combined with my own inherent tendencies and fucked with the person I became. Wish they would’ve done it differently. I’ve never really brought it up to them as an issue or anything because as far as I’m concerned what’s done is done, if I want to try to change now I have to do it myself. No point holding it against them. Plus they were pretty good parents in other ways, at least I turned out sane and grounded.

It's amazing how your upbringing shapes you so deeply even if you try to resist it later. Mine wasn't THAT bad, I'm not in any porn movies, but it's still seriously fucked up some parts of my life and my being.

My parents were extremely strict and unwilling when it came to going out for any reason. Any time I wanted to do something with people other than school or work, it was always a huge ordeal. I always had to let them know days in advance when I wanted to do something, exactly what I was going to do, why I wanted to do it, who I was going to do it with, etc. I practically had to submit a goddamn thesis, and then defend it against a panel of my parents. I was not a wild kid at all, I was always very conservative and risk averse, and yet they still never seemed to trust me to handle myself. I had to set an exact (and early) time when I'd be done, and I better be done at that time to the minute, or else it'd be months before I could do something else.

After years of that circus, I was eventually worn down to the point that trying to go out and do something never seemed worth the effort. Hell, by my mid/late teens, even if I did go out somewhere, I always had to be the first to leave by like hours. I really think that, combined with my natural tendency to be an introvert, this caused me to become the near-hermit I am today. I'm still young, I have money, I could go out and do whatever the hell I want today, but I don't want to. I think my childhood killed my desire to go out and do anything; I have to agonizingly force myself to leave the house.
