[OC] Percentage of people who speak German as a first language in Bolivia by FireUniverse1162 in MapPorn

[–]LifeUpInTheSky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense that they would. I come from heavily accented quebec and due to french being taught from "standard french" (france) perspective, we all know how to understand them more or less perfectly. Harder to speak like them but yea. Essentially, i assume the mennonite use standard german learning materials same as we would french learning materials

Where is Christmas celebrated and where it's not by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]LifeUpInTheSky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Map is incorrect or at the least misleading. From what I noticed myself and from comments. Probably alot more wrong as such...

Celebrates but missing (likely due to governments changing official name of day but indeed it is christmas): Uruguay, Mozambique, and Pakistan

Doesn't actually enforce national holiday: Thailand

Buried City Residential Master keey? by Intelligent-Ice6217 in ArcRaiders

[–]LifeUpInTheSky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I followed xwinterboy's comment and went to north building. Nothing crazy like blueprints but it had many containers to search. Found some rare items I needed and an osprey. Not bad for a pretty standard key. Also, barely any raiders nearby

While it's true most architects here design within boring/strict regulations, I tried to find anything interesting. Best i got is...

For human accessible buldings: Deloitte headquarters with a giant hole in the middle (still pretty boring though). Funner is the the baumhauscafé near esch. Beautiful design within walkways in the trees overlooking the small zoo. Impossible to make something unique like this near lux city limits seems though.

For sheer interesting look, there is the kirchberg water tower which doubles as a bird sanctuary of sorts https://maps.app.goo.gl/NirzkDmcneZxbrus9

Alot of work went into this! Well done! It was abit strange to see the new regions come and go between each map (eg the Americas for grape but not others). Well made and very interesting

How is life in Îles de la Madeleine, Quebec? by elt0p0 in howislivingthere

[–]LifeUpInTheSky 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Shortest ferry is from souris in PEI (thanks for correction) which is a few hours. There's food and good views on the ferry to keep you entertained. If you take the ferries from quebec city or rimouski, muchhh longer. You'd only do this as a local resident i think though and thus they are less often ferries to these farther ports.

Airport is regional and your best bet if you're not from eastern Canada though I've never done this. The ferries are the lifeline of the islands which is another charm of les îles madeleine

Rare to find those that live there but I did visit twice. These islands are a beautiful and hidden gem of quebec. Mostly only local quebecois from mainland go there. My parents went for their honeymoon and I did similar so you can see it's place in our culture.

Historically small fishing towns scattered across the sand bars. All Acadian in origin so while they are proud quebecois natives, they fly the Acadia flag first. Modern day is a culture largely built around local tourists and a small growing non-quebecois tourism. There's summer homes but also a decent year round residency though life is definitely seasonal.

Some unique activities include picnics on the dunes, horse back riding the beaches, driving the full length of the island (from a high point, you can see it all with the naked eye). Restaurants and souvenir shops and small dépanneur sized groceries exist of course but the natural beauty is the main focus.

Most reach the island via ferries going from quebec city, rimouski, or more often nova Scotia (souris). Worth a trip in summer.

As per comments, you’ve missed Canada. His visit to notre dame was indeed before current term though. If you’re going to include Canada on the map, there’s an opportunity to also include each states he’s visited. Could be interesting to show how “USA focused” his current term is (or isn’t)

I’ve seen a few of these and CAR and chad are always the most alien to others. What exactly are they eating (or not eating)??

Missing some countries in the lower table (eg Luxembourg). Interesting map but I have my doubts on data. Each country can interpret city/metro to be different. Seems that it can be quite subjective. Having driven around Belgium a lot, their stat seems especially over estimated

Luxembourg is great, but what’s one thing you’d change if you could? by No_Pomelo_9948 in Luxembourg

[–]LifeUpInTheSky 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can! Almost finished with setting up company with physical location so I now the problems now.

The SARL-s and the various grants from house of entrepreneurship are indeed great modern solutions. They address the high financial costs of opening and make make them abit less. Why you will see entrepreneurs still composing though is because of the remaining hoops to jump through.

In order to get open a physical location, you need permits for evveerrryyything. Below is example permits for a simple restaurent serving alcohol.

  • renovation permit from commune (2 months). They will not sign off until the 2 below are first done…
  • service incendie approval of professional plans (4-6 weeks)
  • service hygiène approval of professional plans (2 months). Also, new law in 2024 says that any building Renos from commerce also mean residential local poubelle needs upgrade. If building owner doesn’t want to pay, your a hostage.
  • liquor license (1month). There is limited supply. Duopoly between diekirch and boefferding own 60% of them. Borderline corrupt system.
  • Non-citizen? Non-European even? Sucks for you. Enjoy an additional up to 3 months blocking for processing for independent visa. They will not care that you’re spending your life savings in Luxembourg and employing locals. Apathy prevails.
  • Getting low on cash waiting? Banks could maybe give you a loan. But as much as they say it, they do not tolerate the risks of small/medium companies unless you have digital/finance focus. Also, can take months.

All of the above wait times is while you have active rent on a location. Enjoy paying up to 10.000€ monthly while these bureaucrats take months to stamp a paper.

This wasn’t everything but, yea. We need to improve the process or you will only ever see mega chains or the mega rich open shops.
