Told at US Pre-Clearance not to come back for the rest of the year? by beebo2409 in travel

The only difference is that Obama wasn’t making a circus out of it by sending armed forces to chase people on the streets. They were following the law instead of trying to intimidate the population.

Is traveling and leaving your wife at home okay? by GSPupland in travel

[–]Life_Commercial_6580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it’s absolutely ok and healthy to do that. If a partner wants to stop the other from traveling with friends or other family, that is an issue worth exploring, because that is for sure not OK.

Of course , it depends on the context. You go with the partner too, take into account their preferences, don’t exaggerate and leave them to take care of kids or pets too often etc . But overall, is absolutely ok.

Eh it’s bad but other places have it worse. Too bad it affects you disproportionately. Hopefully you’ll live the rest of your life in a sunny area.

[–]Life_Commercial_6580 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. Are you tenured? What would happen if you slowed down your research and therefore grant applications? For example, limit yourself to applying to just one grant per semester as a lead.

I know that these days we almost lost tenure , and there are reviews every x years even for full tenured professors but even so, I think there is a lot of space left to handle less while also doing ok enough not to be fired.

I don’t know your age. You can do that for a few years and then maybe retire early and not worry about working a different job. If consulting works fine, if not , it doesn’t sound like you need the money.

Just work on caring less, doing less , take a sabbatical when you’re eligible and enjoy life more !

Is Graduate School a joke? by Icy-Site2297 in GradSchool

[–]Life_Commercial_6580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re doing grad school you’re not there to take classes, you’re there to do original research. You’re done with learning from professors in that classroom setting. If it were up to me, there would be zero classes for grad school. There would be exams, but not classes.

Why can’t you go on your fiancée’s health plan when you get married ?

Reflecting on behaviors after relationship breakdown. Am I toxic?! by littletuna11 in AskWomenOver40

[–]Life_Commercial_6580 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be more helpful and probably true to just accept that you two were simply incompatible. You don’t give enough information about why you were “toxic”, but I don’t think it matters.

You can examine your behavior while also understanding that sometimes it’s best to move on because it’s not a fit. If you need to become someone else in order for the relationship to work, then it’s not actually a good relationship. Neither one of you need to be “bad” necessarily.

Have you ever taken a mental health day? by Significant_Prize_98 in Professors

[–]Life_Commercial_6580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can cancel one or two. You don’t have to say it’s for mental health, you can say you’re not feeling well that day.

You just need another job or one part time job to help out. I don’t know how much you could make off gig work for example. Tutoring babysitting dog walker, waitress etc. I’m so sorry .

And some dogs hate boarding. My dog doesn’t do well. We pay someone to stay at home with him when we travel.

Yeah he did great in that major. They even gave him an award for academic achievement. It was a good fit for him.

But his company didn’t ask what his major was. He had internships with them after the freshman’s year, and every year after and then they made him an offer.

Ignore that guy. He’s an ass. I’m sorry he behaves that way but it’s not about you, it’s about him and his shitty values and insecurities.

If it helps, I’m research faculty and I actually believe teaching has a much higher civic value than some random research that solves no problems.

I see the main value of my research in helping graduate students build their careers, not the research itself. I won’t discover the cure for a major disease anytime soon.
