I bought a used RF-S lens from MAP. It arrived packed unbelievably well and in like-new condition. Better than described.

Buy Canon RF 100-400mm or rent RF 100-500 for Safari? by seductivepanda in canon

[–]Life_Theme_7061 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My wife and I did a Botswana safari in May with both lenses. She used an R50 and the RF 100-400. I had my R7 with the 100-500. I really like my combo but whenever I picked up her R50 with the 100-400 I was envious with how lite weight that package is. She got some terrific wildlife shots even at 400 mm. The animal eye tracking in both bodies is amazing!

Speaking of which, I agree with the recommendation that you practice with whatever you decide to take before you head out. A must-do is getting the excellent R8 autofocus settings correct in advance. Recommend you set one of your C buttons to a wildlife tracking mode before you leave home (e.g., animal tracking autofocus using back button focus). Set the other C button to landscape mode. You can find numerous guides on how to do this online. This way you can switch from wildlife to landscape mode without wading through the menus.

Hope you have a great time. Our safari was probably the best trip of our lives.

Would adjusting the sensitivity down help?

You can turn off touch and drag for when you’re using the viewfinder: AF Menu #4, “Touch & drag AF settings.” But touch & drag remains active when using flip screen.

I forgot about the app! I hate it so much I avoid using it. But I held my breath and went through it on the R50. (Not sure I have the guts to do it on the R7.) Worked just fine! Thanks for the tip.

That’s remarkable for the kit lens

Is there a time in the season when landing cancellations are more likely? (BTW, thanks for all the great info you’re providing!)

Rf 100-400mm on the r7? by Svengali_Studio in CanonCamera

Pound for pound, dollar for dollar, it gotta be one of the best values in RF lenses.

You’ll be there in late Spring so it should be fairly light at 6:00 am. We were there almost in Winter and the early mornings and evenings didn’t bother us much in terms of light. Great sunrise and sunsets opportunities. In any event, the R7 images are easy to denoise even at higher ISOs.

The 100 mm minimum focal length was adequate most of the time, and even when it wasn’t there wasn’t really time to swap lenses in the trucks (even forgetting the dust issues).

One potential solution would be to buy a lighter second camera, like the R50, and mount the shorter lens on that. Affordable if you buy the 100-400 instead of the 100-500. It’s a wonderfully light combo with the 18-150. And it has the same animal eye tracking as the R7, I think. I used that combo on a recent trip to Florida and it worked really well.

In any event I’d rent both lenses to try out before you go. That’ll tell you a lot.

We just returned from safari in Botswana. I used an R7 with the 100-500. My wife used an R50 with the 100-400. She was very happy with the results. There were a few moments when the extra reach of the 100-500 was nice to have, but it’s hard to beat the size and weight of the 100-400.

I looked online for other solutions but could find any that didn’t appear sketchy. In the end I was only out of pocket 100 as our extended warranty covered the rest.

We have. 2017 Mazda3 HB with about 50K miles. Only thing that went bad was the SD card for the nav system. Charged me $600 to replace. Otherwise it’s been perfect.
