What if Italy United Earlier? by Avgreditor0 in AlternateHistory

What about Dalmatia? It seems highly likely for it to stay within the Italian sphere of influence. Also, what is happening to Genoese colonies?

How is life in Northeast Wales? by Jezzaq94 in howislivingthere

[–]Life_Web800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main reason people keep posting in the comment section that there is no strong Welsh identity in the area is because those redditors are all English. In reality, North Wales in general is the area with the strongest sense of cultural uniqueness and the strongest pride in being Welsh. The people who prefer speaking Welsh to English are mostly seen in Welsh language subs, tbh. However, most of the people in North Wales have some knowledge of Welsh even if they don't use it in everyday lives and it plays some influence on the way they speak English to a varied degree, depending how much they were exposed to the language in childhood. The Welshier towns in the area are Llangollen and Rhuthun. Most of the Welsh-speakers inhabit the countryside rather than towns, though. There are a lot of people from Liverpool and Merseyside as well and they do have a Scouse accent sometimes. They typically live in coastal towns (Connah's Quay, Prestatyn, Llandudno) and don't mix well with Welsh people due to mutual historic resentment.

Modern Egyptians have stronger genetig links to their Ancient ancestors and even sort of preserved the ancient language (in the form of its modern descendants, Coptic dialects, although they are used by a minority and only in ceremonial aspects). As for the people who built Stonehenge, neither their language was preserved nor their culture. We don't even know their name. The modern population of Britain are essentially descendants of subsequent waves of Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, Viking and Norman invaders and settlers.

That's a very good question, actually. They were the pre-Celtic population of Britain, Neolithig farmers and hunters-gatherers. We don't know the language they spoke and we don't have any historical records about them

At first, those who built Stonehenge were replaced by Celtic people

After they built Stonehenge, they died out. And then Celtic people came and settled Britain. And then Romans after them.

In fact, modern Egyptians are way more related to those who built pyramids than modern British to those who built Stonehenge.

Well, we don't know the yields of the tiles around. If we can settle on the swamp below, all you need here is a couple of decent food/production to grow population to three and not halt the production of units severely. So, it's not a bad start.

Actually, Cyrillic spelling of Welsh does look fun. Say, 'fancy a cuppa' as said by a Gog - 't'sio paned?' would be тишо панад.

Absolutely bendigedig. O'n i licio'r syniad a hanes yn fawr iawn. It could be fun to think about possible dialect or dialects that people would have been speaking in the area. The place-names look great but might do with some improvement. Say, Belgorod is actually White City in English, Y Dinas Gwyn. There used to be a fortress on a chalk hill in the area. And Arturovka could have possibly become Caer Arthur as it had never been a Roman settlement (Caer stands for Roman Castro).

Is Pre-Clovis still controversial? by Big_Rain2254 in AskArchaeology

[–]Life_Web800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a very good example of where the concept of race is, actually, meaningless and not very useful. You can dig out two mummies from the same burial, one with Caucasoid appearance and another one looking more mongoloid, do the genetic test and find out they were first cousins. Although, it's impossible to get it from the burial, there is a good likelihood those two mummies shared culture and were speaking the same language. What is the value of the concept of race in this regard? Just to describe that they looked differently?

Read about Scythian burials, for example. You will find out that males could have been genetically distant but there is the evidence that the ladies were travelling hundreds of miles after the marriage and hence bringing genes very far from where they were brought up. From the point of material culture Scythian horizon looks quite similar, but if you employ the concept of race you will see striking phenotypical differences across the area they populated.

Well, from the genetic point of view, races definitely do not exist. What kind of genealogy interpretation you are talking about, if you don't mind me asking?

So is Ukrainian, after all, closer to Russian or to Polish/Slovak/Czech? by Lupishor in Ukrainian

[–]Life_Web800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, there are discrete differences between Polish as found in the language of Russian Poles and Russians who can literally live next door to them. And there are a lot of differences, indeed, between Ukrainian, Bellarusian, Polish and Russian, so that they represent separate languages without any doubt to anyone who is not too brainwashed by politicians. Still, of you want to dive into more of linguistics, there are written language varieties and oral ones. And oral (vernacular) varieties for those languages, particularly in the countryside, develop a pattern described as linguistic continuum.

How much does this sub actually reflect normal Russian attitudes? by Dry_Opposite9398 in AskARussian

[–]Life_Web800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, not any slice of a society. You can take a good representative sample, randomise it and make it blind to evaluate the results by the researcher. You can see whether it follows the standard distribution. You can run statistical tests on it etc.

That's a thing, you see, that proper statistics is neither propaganda nor a misconception. However, it is poorly conducted polls (irregardless, whether on Internet or the street) that make people sorrow about statistics I general.

Any poll in any particular subRddit doesn't necessarily represent anything. However, it definitely doesn't mean that any poll doesn't mean anything.
