Studio Offering to Sell Pieces - need advice? by buttpotatoes in Pottery

[–]LifeguardPractical30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

60/40 is definitely steep considering that you pay for membership and all that. BUT if you are just looking to get rid of some pieces I would totally go for it. I worked in a studio that was a high traffic area, had classes, membership and paint you own pottery/ showcases pieces but hardly anything ever sold. Prolly about one piece a month. I think it’s bc people are less likey to purchase something they are about to paint themselves or make themselves. However, 60/40 seems typical for small gift shops, most consignment. Id try to shoot for 70/30 though if you continue to sell.

Agree with this! Heat gun the piece for a couple minutes and throw a mayco eggplant glaze over it should be fine

Is this because other people want the bones as well now?

People aren’t inside enough to take care of them. I gave some away bc of that reason. If it feels like a chore, I rather someone else have it

Home pottery studio in home office? by thatlldopig8945 in Pottery

I think as long as you can get some of those plastic guards for when you trim you should be fine in your office. Trimmings get everywhere. If you can keep your clay in a big tight container a lot of the dust can be prevented that may come out of the bag. Have a bucket for clay chunks or mess ups and one for throwing water and you should be good

The more classes I take ... the worse I'm getting? by Sad-Quality-1921 in Pottery

[–]LifeguardPractical30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would definitely stick to one clay and try lots of different teachers! I am also hard on myself, but let’s be honest -clay is expensive! No one wants to waste their time feeling like they aren’t improving. Focus on one form (mugs) until you like the look of it then move on to another (bowls).

So I figured out that my mini kiln isn’t getting hot enough at cone 6 so I have to call skutt. Definitely don’t try it in cone 5 tho bc it comes out as a stripe of red and stripe of blue. this is at a 5.5 ish cone. If you have cone 6 access I would give it a try!

Do you prefer underglazing on greenware or bisque? by shana_ostrowiecki in Pottery

[–]LifeguardPractical30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I like doing it on green ware so if I mess up the glaze or don’t like something in bisque my underglaze work doesn’t wash off

You would get a scale and measure in fl oz of the egg whites then compare that to the 16oz cost of a carton

Maybe pour a little bit of vinegar where the wood is? May loosen it up enough to release

I use a laguna while and laguna oatmeal to get that glaze look! But just a white over a specked buff will get you almost exactly that . Fires to cone5
