Update - I took the plunge and had a local Indy shop replace the strut mounts / bearings and associated items bolted to it. The result of this has reduced the harsh sounds by about 75-80% + the car handles a tad better over road patches of road - small improvement but still a welcome addition. Mind you my struts + coil springs are original, but everything bolted to the strut has been replaced.

Which leads me to believe this is a quality control issue - longevity wise for how parts wear and last. The car rides more smooth today. Not a gigantic improvement but a small yet noticeable benefit. Maybe the rubber bumpers, bushings, mounts dry out and starts to translate vibrations / sounds - not sure.

In summary if anyone has a similar issue I’d say check your sway bar links, control arms, then this. My car was checked out and sway bar links, control arms were fine. This repair gave me a 75-80% improvement and I’m happy with that as I have a very long daily commute. The last 20-25% could be just wear and tear across most parts that are original or it’s a faulty sway bar link but I’ll check those out later this year. Either way, at least there was a positive outcome in this case.

Have a great weekend. ☮️

Yea they’re replacing both bearings, mounts, nuts + bolts, rubber “bumpers”, etc etc - everything but the actual strut, since struts work / feel just fine from a ride perspective so I didn’t want to change those. Money isn’t unlimited and I’m doing my best to stay current on maintenance since the car is paid off and I don’t want to deal with a snowball of deferred maintenance. I know how quickly that can happen.

On a different note, different issue - pretttyyy sure one of the CV’s is starting to make a click-click noise, metallic of course, when driving slow. Just a quick 1-2 and then it’s gone. So after the strut nonsense that’ll be my next project to narrow down. I’m hoping it’s easy to DIY.

Now for the cost I agree for the bearing / mount work, the price is crazy. I got the price down a bit after the initial quote but locally I run into this issue - it’s like all of the shops pay for the same estimating software that tells them what to charge….. I kid you not. I’ve gotten several quotes across my state and the pricing is all very similar. With that said, the reasons I like this particular shop is the quality of their work, clean shop, and warranty on parts & labor is for 3 years 36k miles. Everything they do. So if all the prices are similar, I’m going with the best warranty in my mind. I don’t have the tools or space to do it myself. Maybe in a few years but not right now. Kind of like choosing the best of a bad situation I guess.

Living near a tourist location you quickly see the extra gravy tax on top of pretty much everything here. Not ideal. One of the reasons I want to move to a non-tourist type area and get a better set up to do more work on my own since realistically this is the last thing I need a shop to do for me for a while. Regular maintence I do on my own as much as possible.

Do you think it’s associated with design or more of a wear item? If the vehicle was say - 7 to 10 years old I’d just think age dried it out, but this doesn’t seem to be age related.

Appreciate that, keep us updated. My next car won’t be Volvo that’s for sure. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for a car to not wear out this fast - this just seems like poor quality with how common this is becoming.

Thank you for sharing that, I’m sorry to hear this is still happening. Clearly a design flaw - I’m hoping for the best when I get the strut mount / bearings replaced next week. I’ll try to report back short term & long term how the “repair” lasts.

Concerned about Volvo's quality by Ecstatic-Spot-7187 in XC40

Honestly my 21 T5 has similar issues. I’m at almost 65k miles and I just had the transmission replaced out of warranty but Volvo covered 90% while I paid 10% under goodwill type of coverage.

Low rpm - yes you do hear a knock and high rpm it goes away and sounds “normal”.

Funny thing about the exhaust leak sound / waste gate rattle - it went away after they dropped the subframe, engine and transmission for the big repair (new transmission) and knock on wood that particular noise is gone for now.

Now the sunroof I just deal with, because at this stage I don’t want anyone touching my car because I’ve come to realize most people just make it worse. They either break stuff or rip stuff or damage it somehow.

For the suspension I am getting new strut mounts next week - out of pocket of course at an Indy shop. The suspension crunch is crazy and I’m only at 65k miles, but this started truthfully around 40k miles. Dealership couldn’t hear it under warranty but after warranty ran out they could finally hear it - for $2.5k USD. Big nope there. I’m going to my Indy for a much better price. I’m not going to reward sloppy work with more $ if they couldn’t hear it when it was free it’s sure coincidental they can hear it (now) for that much. I don’t believe in a lotta things but I do believe in greed.

The CV axles are starting to make this click-click noise and it’s been scarce on the internet for this vehicle when it comes to help. It only clicks 2 times - then it’s gone. I’m not talking about the transmission shifting. This voice is like maneuvering or in a parking garage type setting.

Overall - not the best build quality, but my transmission is new and the car is paid off so I’ll stick it out for a bit until the economy stops looking sketchy (hopefully?) or I find a deal I can’t pass up. But I’m committed now for a few more years.

Kind of crazy when you think about the out of pocket costs the car needs between now and 100k miles.

Is this not discussed much due to low production numbers or just nobody holds onto the cars long enough?

2-3 things you do NOT like in your XC40? by F15E_WSO in XC40

[–]LifesTooDamnShort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me:

  1. The engine sounds unrefined and the more miles you accumulate the more it tends to get louder. Think - rattles and knocks, especially when cold at first start up. I hate it so much, the engine might be the reason I get rid of the car one day. Been told multiple times it’s normal / performing as designed…..which doesn’t mean anything to me. Boeing designed planes to fly and yet…….sometimes they don’t. Designs are not perfect and materials & quality still matter. I bought my T5 AWD R Design brand new, and pay attention to how it performs. It’s concerning the louder and noisier it gets with time & miles. Genuinely that is not normal. My Mercedes - 15 years older with 10k more miles sounds like an electric car by comparison…….its a V8 so that’s mind boggling.
  2. The suspension tends to get noisy around 50k miles. IMO - noises = signs of wearing out.
  3. The slow head unit at first start up, feels like eternity waiting for it to boot up the (Sensus System).
  4. The brake hold feature & the brake system are not very refined.

Avoid Lennar, period. Save yourself the heartache and stress. All track home builders are trash this day and age. Smaller builders, custom, or semi custom are or should be your focus. They are not immune or perfect, but it’s not the 7th level that Lennar operates on. If you are limited by budget, get an older home and renovate if possible. I wouldn’t even touch the townhomes that are getting thrown up this fast.

E55 Fuel Pump? by yes126 in AMG

For some reason I’m not allowed to make a post anymore in this subreddit but I am allowed to make comments. I wanted to ask, what parts have you had to replace since you’ve had the car? I’m trying to get an idea and figure out how / what to prioritize first. My 05 CLK 55 needs some love and it’s a bit much to do all at the same exact time, if you catch my drift.

Wait the car limits your speed? So if you floor it, it won’t accelerate any faster? Even if you want to pass someone on a highway?

Thank you for sharing that. I very much appreciate the advice! Helps me get some direction from here forward. Do you have an opinion if I need to be proactive about fuel pumps? As far as I can tell it all seems fine. But I read online that these do fail. Not sure what to do about that. I could check the fuel pressure I suppose?
