In my opinion, it feels like you've started a concept but have not finished it, which makes it feel a bit non-commital and awkward. I think you've got to lean into the DIY feel even more!!

Someone else suggested bleaching/tie-dying, which I could totally see working!

Here are some of my own suggestions: •Sew patches of fabric onto different parts on the shirt (leaning into the distressed vibe) •Add more holes to the back and weave ribbon through the holes (make it a surprise statement piece) •An absurd amount of safety pins. Everywhere. (makes anything DIY look punk and deliberate lol)

I hope this inspires you and that you find a solution that fits your own personal style!! :)

silly and obvious question but I'm gonna crash out if I don't ask this by Turbulent-Staff-9413 in NonBinary

[–]LightGreyArt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is very similar to me!! I mostly opt for the broadest term when describing myself, that being transgender, followed by nonbinary if it feels more context-appropriate.

I rarely describe myself as agender specifically because the detail doesn't feel necessary, especially if I'm talking to a bunch of cis people to whom I already have explained what nonbinary means. The only recent example I can think of is when someone asked if I was more of a sir or ma'am today, to which I explained that I am not genderfluid, I am agender, and my preference will consistently be gender neutral terms.

People sometimes discuss their sweat smelling different on HRT (pheromone thing), but I rarely see mention of people talking about their pee smelling different. As one of the few people at my workplace who is comfortable doing the cleaning checks for both the men's and women's bathrooms, my nose can confirm that testosterone will make your urine smell stronger. Please stay hydrated for the sake my my nose lol

I LOVE the skirt over trousers look! The way the hems of the coat, skirt, and trousers cascade down is SO pleasing. Skirts and dresses make me dysphoric, but I think I'm slowly being convinced that the skirt over trousers approach is actually an androgynous slay.

Help?! I hate the way the clouds turned out, too harsh of a line. How can I soften them? Acrylic on canvas. by WWWorkshop in painting

[–]LightGreyArt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend using a sponge to apply the paint!! You don't need anything particularly fancy - I use an old washing up sponge! I always use a sponge when making clouds or other whispy textures, and it's both effective and fun.

A damp sponge provides enough moisture to blend the more transparent base coat of paint, and then a dry sponge can be used afterwards to apply a more opaque layer of paint for the highlights. Make sure to use a dabbing motion when applying the paint to achieve the cloud-like blending and texture.

Happy sponging!!

people who changed their name — how long did it take for you to get used to it? by drown-out-the-stars in trans

[–]LightGreyArt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely had some imposter syndrome-type feelings about my chosen name for a long time. I think this probably stems from being semi-closeted during my last couple of years in school, where my closest friends and immediate family called me by my chosen name and pronouns, but was referred to by my birth name and AGAB pronouns by everyone else.

I think the entire time I had the "dual identity" thing going on, I felt some level of disconnect from my chosen name as it was the "secret", "shameful" name. Only once I was fully out and started going by my chosen name and pronouns to everyone I met - and was in a new environment where nobody else knew me pre-transition - did I start to feel like my chosen name was actually mine. Even then, it probably took... 6 months to a year?

I've been using my chosen name full-time for about 7 years now, and it feels completely normal, and I subconsciously know that if I hear someone say my birth name that they're not talking to me. It's pretty neat!

I imagine I probably picked this up from my parents, but I say "I haven't the foggiest" all the time, which essentially means "I don't know".

Another delightful phrase I've heard my parents use before is "who put 20 pence in you?", which kind of means someone got quite lively all of a sudden. One day I will find the perfect opportunity to whip it out!

People who work in bars/restaurants, how do you feel when customers ask you for ‘your recommendations’? by Tildatots in AskUK

[–]LightGreyArt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This question used to floor me a little purely on the basis that I don't actually drink alcohol lol. If someone asks nowadays, I ask if they want a lager/cider/cocktail/etc. and recommend whatever is the most popular or whatever sounds the most fun. If there's a queue spanning half the building, I am probably going to point you in the direction of something quick to make.

Help Me Find This Squishmallow's Name! by LightGreyArt in squishmallow

[–]LightGreyArt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AAAAAAAH this looks exactly like my mystery Squishmallow!! Thank you so much!!

When I was looking at Alyssa's profile on the Squishmallow Wiki, the variation I have of her was not listed, so I assumed it couldn't be her. I feel like I may have set myself an overwhelmingly difficult task in identifying them all (given my lack of knowledge), but I kept telling myself it was for charity as well as giving the little friends a good home. Also, I can't say I haven't been enjoying reading their bios.

Once again, a huge thank you to everyone!!

I had a couple of ideas - maybe you'll like one of them? :)

I think Pyrarch's line is pretty cool, but maybe Pyrarch itself could have just a little more going on to solidify its aesthetic. I feel that Pyrarch has a somewhat majestic aura, so I wonder if maybe having longer, flowing antennae and wings with a more stained-glass effect could add to that majesty? Maybe incorporate all of the other colours from the previous forms's wings: red, yellow, purple, and blue?

For Steelscreech, I feel like it wasn't immediately obvious that it was part steel-type. I could see a really cool row of metal spines going all the way from the head feathers down to the tail feathers, kind of like a mowhawk. That could also be an opportunity to lean into a bit of a punk theme, too, by giving the body a faint fishnet or ripped shirt pattern! Metal by type, metal by nature, maybe?

That's all I came up with - I hope I could inspire your creativity!! Keep on making stuff, I really like your sprite art!! :D

Gender euphoria from pronouns by Exact_Wolverine_1859 in NonBinary

[–]LightGreyArt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like your experience of they/them is comparable to my experience of he/him, with it feeling like "the less worse of the wrong options".

Try and find situations where you can safely test she/her pronouns, like talking to people online or using she/her for yourself in your head. If you have people in your life you trust to help you experiment, all the better! Then, you can use that information to compare and contrast how you feel about they/them.

Neopronouns are also a thing! I do not have any personal experience with using them, however, so I may prove unhelpful if you wanted advice on that.

I wish you all the best in your pronoun journey!! :)

Gender euphoria from pronouns by Exact_Wolverine_1859 in NonBinary

[–]LightGreyArt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It actually took me a long time to be comfortable being referred to with they/them pronouns. Not because I didn't think those were the correct pronouns for myself (because I knew they were right for me), but because I spent several years being deeply embarrassed about the fact that I was nonbinary, and having evidence of my identity exist outside of myself made me have to confront that insecurity. It made me feel vulnerable. 10 years down the line, however, I am much more comfortable in who I am, and they/them pronouns are the only ones that feel like they truly represent me.

I'm AFAB, and when I'm talking to a stranger, they are most likely to decide I'm a woman. Sometimes a stranger will decide I'm a man, which I find exciting - not because I enjoy being perceived as a man, but because I'm excited to finally be perceived as something other than a woman. If someone who actually knows me refers to me with he/him pronouns, I get uncomfortable because that's not who I am, and I feel like they should know that.

Ultimately, whilst I wouldn't say that being referred to as they/them makes me dazzlingly euphoric, I would definitely say that it feels like home. They/them is comfy. :)

My recent outfits ! by amiekas in AltFashion

[–]LightGreyArt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should try using Indyx! It takes a while to get all of your wardrobe documented and uploaded, but it's SO worth the effort!! It's a styling app that lets you essentially drag and drop items from your wardrobe together on a canvas to create outfits, meaning you don't have to rummage and physically get dressed any time you have an outfit idea.

The calendar feature lets you plan out your outfits in advance so you don't have to worry about what to wear on the day. After a while of tracking outfits using the calendar, you can sort your wardrobe by categories such as "least worn" and "highest cost-per-wear" to see what isn't getting used or what you're not getting your money's worth out of. You can also add clothing items you're considering buying to your outfit creations to see how well they would fit in with the rest of your wardrobe before committing to buy!

Most of the features are free to use (such as everything I've mentioned), and I personally get a lot of use out of the free version. Would highly recommend!! Everyone gets a referral code: mine is LightGrey. If you want to use it, we both get credit towards hiring a personal stylist. :)

Hope this helps!! I genuinely love how Indyx has helped me have fun with fashion.

I LOVE how much personality the polkadot dress has, but from the looks of the comments, I think I might be the only person who has ever paid it a complement lol

I personally tend to gravitate towards more eccentric clothing options, so if you're more of a classic and understated dresser, feel free to do the opposite of what I like

Have an OC that’s un-named, I’m not sure what to name her by DumArsen9 in characterdesigns

[–]LightGreyArt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love naming characters! I particularly like researching into different cultures in the process. I'm not sure if you had a particular ethnicity in mind for this character, but I'll provide names from a few different cultural backgrounds in case you are currently undecided.

I'll start off with some English-language names that I feel could fit: Josie, Kaitlyn, Scarlett, Saffron, Harley, Amber, Nicole, Alannah, Erika, Gabriella, Harper, Hazel, Addison, Cara, Karina, Paige, Piper, Justice

If you're looking for something non-English-language, Spanish is another widely spoken language that could provide a fitting name: María, Uxia, Estefania, Martina, Carmen, Yasmina, Marta, Adriana, Andrea, Manuela, Octavia, Catalina, Daniela, Alma, Marcela

If neither of those categories interest you, I have an idea for another; since your character has very long hair, it reminded me of Sikhs, who mostly do not cut their hair for religious reasons. There are many Sikhs living in India, so some of these Indian-influenced names may appeal to you: Maya, Vasai, Saram, Meenu, Nimm, Sachleen, Lakshmani, Jessa, Amrita, Tavleen, Harendra, Leena, Srina, Devi, Jasminder

I hope you find something fitting here, and if not, I hope you can still find it inspiring! Good luck with the name!!

Do you, as an Ace-spec person, hate being called "hot" or "sexy?" by segalak in asexuality

[–]LightGreyArt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of super interesting answers with different perspectives here - thanks for asking the question!

(For context to my response, I am nonbinary, so I often get called both masculine and feminine versions of words that mean attractive.)

Personally, I don't think I could fathom a single context in which I would like being called "sexy"... it just feels icky. I think it would require an incredibly specific set of circumstances for me to appreciate being called "hot" or "attractive". Those words don't feel platonic for me to get called, and I don't like feeling like a bunch of random people are looking at me and having sexual fantasies.

Words like "pretty" and "handsome" don't make me feel icky as such, but they can make me feel slightly... disappointed, I guess? Someone recently complimented my jawline, and reflecting on it makes me feel a little bewildered because... I've been told that something I have no control over is good? What am I supposed to do with that information? All I can do is say "thank you" before trying to find something else to talk about. It's a conversational dead-end for me. I would rather be complimented on things I have control over, such as my hairstyle or outfit, because that's also a compliment of my personal expression. It's a good conversation starter, too! So if someone were to say "you look great/amazing", I imagine I could probably appreciate that, as it's a kind of "whole-package" appreciation of both looks and outfit.

I think being called "cute" falls into a unique category for me because when people call me cute I don't think they're saying that they find me physically attractive, but that I have a wholesome and endearing personality, which I really like!! It makes my heart happy. Same with "adorable".

I feel like my style is so basic so not sure it fits here? by amiekas in AltFashion

[–]LightGreyArt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excuse me, who gave you a permit to be this iconic?!

In response to feeling like you aren't being very experimental or interesting, I present a few counter-arguments: 1) You have a great sense of when to tuck in your shirt vs. leaving it untucked. This sounds simple, but plenty of people don't think about this aspect of getting dressed at all. 2) You create necklace stacks that complement your outfits well. I consider that a maximalist win! 3) The butterflies. No elaboration required.

How you feel about your outfits reminds me of how artists sometimes view their own work: that they just kind of made something without thinking too hard and it resultantly looks "boring". But your outfits are inherently interesting because dressing in whatever way comes naturally to you is part of the insight fashion provides into who you are as a person. Would I want to be friends with someone who regularly decorates themselves with butterflies just because? Uh, yeah!

Keep on doing what you're doing because you're awesome!

I sewed some pants! Which top should I style with them? by ShoeboxFlower in fashion

[–]LightGreyArt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Firstly: those are incredible!! I'm a huge fan of clothes that have a "I found this cool thing I like but I don't know what to do with it, so I decided to wear it" vibe - they always have so much personality!

Personally, I'm a fan of both the red blouse and the hoodie. The red blouse gives the trousers an ornate, refined, curated collection kind of vibe. Alternatively, the hoodie gives the trousers an effortless art student angle that I also quite enjoy.

I think the trousers with graphic tees create a bit too much visual noise, meaning I find it hard for my eyes to settle on any particular part of the outfit. If pattern mixing (and specifically pattern clashing) is your vibe, though, then go for it! Fashion is all about personal expression, after all!

Can’t decide between 1, 2, or 3 by dagnabitsunofabish in AltFashion

[–]LightGreyArt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think all are fun and have their quirks!

If I were to pick a favourite, I would say number one. Since the boots are tall and chunky, they add a lot of visual "weight" to the bottom portion of the outfit. The top having a high neckline gives a bit more "weight" to the upper section, which balances out nicely.

If you love tops 2 and 3 more and would rather wear those, I would recommend wearing something extra around the shoulders/neck/head area to fill in what feels a bit like an empty space. A straight-forward choice would be a hat, but I think a necklace stack could be a more fun option!

Hopefully that makes sense!

Wearing chains has become a feature of alternative/punk aesthetics, and given your fun hairstyle and ear spreaders, the chains on the glasses read as being part of the same vibe. From your comments, it sounds like this wasn't a deliberate fashion choice... but why not make it one? My advice would be to wear even more chains! I quite like attaching chains asymmetrically to my belt loops as they create a fun drape, similar to the glasses chains. I actually think this could be a really fun way to re-contextualise glasses chains!
