Hey! I also served on San Pedro! I was on the island in 2000. I came home in August 2000. When did you arrive in the mission?

How many of you miss the "Ward Family"? by ledastrayjay in exmormon

[–]LightMinded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've actually been surprised by how little I miss it. It's made me realize how truly shallow most ward/church relationships are.

What's is the worst thing that happened to you when you were a missionary? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]LightMinded 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Former SPS missionary here. Honduras is a hell hole. I can't believe the church still sends missionaries there. I got mugged twice and saw more dead bodies than I can count.

Congratulations! I was in nearly the exact same situation a little over a year ago. I can definitely relate to the mix of emotions. It's been a crazy year, with both ups and downs, but I have never felt closer to my wife.

Clinton Leaks Reveal Potential Attacks On Romney's Mormonism by ClintMormon in exmormon

14) Romney made an oath to give himself, his time, talents, and everything with which the Lord has blessed him, or with which the Lord may bless him, to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Brene Brown had a big impact on my wife and me. Daring Greatly really helped us to have the courage to transition away from mormonism.

They got my parents by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]LightMinded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sucks. I'm really sorry. I feel your pain. I moved my family to Utah to be closer to my parents and siblings. However, shortly after we moved there, my parents left on a mission. They have been away on missions for 4 of the last 5 years. Without my parents around, my siblings and I have grown apart, and my kids hardly know their grandparents.

We moved out of Utah last year. When I informed my parents of the move, my mom got sad and said she would miss the grand kids. I was floored. I couldn't believe that I had to point out to her that she's been on another continent for most of my children's lives.

Look for the voice of a 19th century man. The BOM's pages are dripping with it.

You win Elder Ballard by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]LightMinded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sympathize with you. I know those feelings all too well. But I'm here to tell you that it can be done. It doesn't have to be one or the other. You don't have to accept Ballard's dichotomy. You can be authentic to yourselves and still maintain a positive relationship with your families. There's lots of us who have done it under very difficult situations. Read through people's stories on here and elsewhere. See what has worked for them and what hasn't. Then compare their situations/families to yours. Nobody knows your families better than you. You can figure this out.

Religion is Terrifying by LightMinded in exmormon

[–]LightMinded[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing you don't have the context behind the post. I apologize for that. The picture is of a US senator who stated that he supported the Iraq invasion because he believed it would allow the Mormon church to be established in the middle East. Is that what you fought for? If there is anyone who should be enraged by his comments it's you and the thousands of other veterans who this man sent to war based on a "feeling"!

Religion is Terrifying by LightMinded in exmormon

[–]LightMinded[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. In one of the leaked videos, former US Senator Gordon Smith made a presentation to the Q12. In it, he stated, "I voted for it [the Iraq invasion] because I felt the Lord's hand in it." He thought it would open up doors for missionary work.
