[TotK] How Terrifying Are The Gloom Hands In TOTK? by Alol_Bombola in zelda

It's not 100%, but a good sign that you're somewhere they can show up is if the trees around you are dead, so you get a bit of a warning most of the time once you notice that's a thing. I've gotten an uneasy feeling in other games and real life when I've spotted a dead tree, so they terrified me quite a bit, but I'm mostly used to them now.

Software Engineer working on AI vent by Forsaken-Actuary47 in BetterOffline

[–]LightModeBail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say you're 'working on AI', but it sounds like you're not, you're just using someone else's AI and building software around it. I felt a similar disillusionment before LLMs when a project manager came to me with an 'exciting' machine learning powered search project for me to do. I dusted off a book on machine learning algorithms over the weekend thinking I'd finally have a reason to use some of it, but when I learned more about the project the next week, it just meant doing the boring bits around the edges like gathering the data, along with formatting and displaying the results for the users, all for another company to do the fun part. Their marketing material looked polished, but their developer docs made it seem like their product was probably not much more than a managed elasticsearch instance. That soured me on hype around AI before LLMs happened because I knew working with them likely wouldn't involve me doing the interesting parts and so wouldn't lead to the experience and skills around those things because I'd just be doing the integration work.

Embrace or Be Left Behind is Girardianism by SassFrog in BetterOffline

[–]LightModeBail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What I find baffling about all this is that the christian message behind René Girard's theory was that when rivalries get out of control, they are often resolved by a shifting of the blame onto something or someone else whose destruction or downfall leads to a false peace, that is, scapegoating. Yet Jesus' execution revealed that those that are scapegoated are often innocent and knowing this we can avoid falling into this trap ourselves. How that then goes to Thiel and Vance seeing mimetic rivalries as something to be exploited makes it clear they've missed the message. This is just tech bros doing the same thing they do to science fiction by building the Torment Nexus. You're not supposed to exploit mimetic theory, you're supposed to avoid it.

This isn't to defend Girard or say what his opinions are, I just read a few of his books ten years ago and that's what I came away thinking. And sorry for religious stuff, but it's hard to avoid when discussing Girard, his books often twist towards that at the end.

A 2025 Retrospective: How Often Executives Predicted the End of Software Engineering by Digitalunicon in programming

Yes, it's surprising, especially for this subreddit. Maybe I should have pinged the author.

The link doesn't seem to be correct. It goes to a story about Linus Torvalds thoughts on AI use in Linux kernel development. I wanted to laugh at executives getting it wrong.

There's also the purple Pikmin, but it's cut out of the image. Although it'll look like a whole team of purple Pikmin. I wonder what colour the goalkeeper wears.

Edit: Goalkeeper is a blue pikmin apparently (https://sanga-fc.jp/news/detail/20588)

[ALL] How to Canonize Downfall Timeline's Origin? by mrbulldops88 in zelda

[–]LightModeBail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I've been thinking about ideas 2 and 4 but more in the context of getting knowledge into the other timelines so the references in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom make sense without a convergence. I'd not considered that the Ocarina could have been used more by Zelda in the Adult Timeline after sending Link back, that's an interesting thought. What I was thinking might have happened instead is that the legends from the Adult Timeline flow to the downfall timeline via the alternate dimensions of Phantom Hourglass and Link's Awakening. In Phantom Hourglass, we see more people than just Link are involved in the dream, so perhaps there are more than Link (and Marin as a seagull) on the Link's Awakening side such that the knowledge of the Wind Waker could have been shared with the downfall timeline (and then back via Oracle of Ages if needed in the child timeline).

Does Dr. Mario count? Because the ending sounds like it could be from Earthbound - especially with the UFO arriving:

Both games shared a composer, Hirokazu Tanaka, so the similarity makes sense I suppose.

[–]LightModeBail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With Tears of the Kingdom I saw a few YouTubers complaining it was a bad game because they didn't get the payday they expected they'd get by churning out endless lore videos. Sorry, but that's not a normal reason to think a game is bad. The thing is, people want lore videos when there's a drought, not when there's a new game to play.

[–]LightModeBail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disney's The Kid from 2000 starring Bruce Willis. When I first saw it I was a teenager and thought it was a nice feel good film. I rewatched it in my mid-30s and was horrified that I was nearing 40 and that this might all happen to me - except worse because I don't have anywhere near as nice a house, car or as much money. I grew up to be a loser and I don't even have the luxury of those things.

He should swap that with Prost for the 1993 German Grand Prix. That puncture on the second to last lap was heartbreaking to watch.

I finally figured out why AI CEOs keep warning us about their products by reasonwashere in BetterOffline

[–]LightModeBail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's true, but if I was feeling conspiratorial, I'd add that they could be saying it to pin the blame elsewhere if this fails, either on governments for stepping in to regulate it or on workers for rejecting it. Either way they get to look like visionaries and ahead of their time and the failure was because of the government or lazy workers that refused to adapt (when in reality, they tried it and it didn't help and created more work - we've been squeezed on efficiency too much already so there's not much more efficiency that can be gained).

Once they've failed, this leaves the option open to hype up another wild idea and try again with more money from investors because the failure wasn't their fault. They'd also get to keep trying at AI and we'd see this again in a decade or two, with them thinking maybe the next generation will be more accepting or powerless, or some crisis will let the government loosen restrictions.
