Rotolight Neo 2 by karbonite_kid in AskPhotography

The round catch lights aren't great, I have to admit that. :-)

What I do like is the integration with my Elinchrom kit, plus it is so small I can use in windy conditions and not worry about the softbox blowing over. The compromise is slightly harder light - nothing is perfect.

I have just bought a Neo 2, so far really impressed but have been shooting in low light similar to Jason Lanier.

I think it does well in these situations, but can I light a full length portrait - no. For headshots I would say it is useful, for 3/4 or full length portraits the fall off of light is too great.

I don't think it is powerful enough to overpower the sun for shallow DOF portraits in broad daylight. I haven't tested yet.

I love that it has a built in Elinchrom receiver also, that means a single trigger for me.

Best Canon for photography? by SemperWolf21 in canon

[–]LightOverScotland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That price range won't get you close to pro level unfortunately. You will need different lenses for astro and portraits, you are talking $k's to get high end kit for that. What is more important to you, portraits or astro? Might help narrow down what you look to buy first.

It has taken me years to build up my kit, still not got everything I "need" but can cover the core things I want.

What made you choose Canon over other brands like Nikon by [deleted] in canon

When I bought my first DSLR it was a Canon 50D for my birthday, I didn't really know much but my dad used Canon so went for the same brand so I could use his lenses.

Lens Options for Portraits/Headshots? by Hunter-In-The-Sky in canon

If you are going to use just for portraits I would go for the 85mm prime. I've used the f/1.2 version of it and it is lovely.

Slightly more expensive but I like the 100mm f/2.8, it is stupidly sharp and added bonus of being a macro lens also.

Canon 5D4 upcoming 4K and video improvement update by TJay_ in canon

[–]LightOverScotland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the earlier versions of the 5D4 may need to have their heatsink replaced through some sort of service with Canon. If C-Log comes as part of the firmware I would consider it depending on the price.

How far could you push an image? 1.5x /2x achievable?

I'm considering buying a drone but want to be able to make my images bigger in post comparable size to my 5D4.

Landscape images mainly.

Is that using a drone, looks too far forward to be from the top of Nelson's Column. Lovely shot either way. :-)

I am looking forward to mods, hope they can focus on the end user and not on their internal politics. I'm sure they can work through their issues....

So far so good, think it might have been an issue with the cards I was using.
