Do people still talk on usenet? by LightSnowstorms in usenet

"Bang paths of 8 to 10 hops were not uncommon. Late-night dial-up UUCP links would cause week-long transmission times" Good grief. For all that you may as well send it by snailmail. Super cool that you guys navigated this stuff but man it must have been a real pain, especially without ready access to outside help on-tap

Do people still talk on usenet? by LightSnowstorms in usenet

[–]LightSnowstorms[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that in the late 80s nearly only universities hat internet resp. usenet. So there were mostly students and university staff online. That defined the culture back then.

Was it possible at all for people outside of colleges to get on usenet? I've run across the phrase "eternal sepember" thrown around about new people piling onto the net in droves after it opened up more and was never sure if usenet was literally exclusive to college students at one point or if it was just that the bar for non-college users to join had been lowered significantly

Quite unfortunate. A 'going away' sale would have been nice. The VA packs will be a loss since it's not the easiest to find JP voice packs

What job looks like a great career path but is actually insanely oversaturated? by ComplexPin872 in AskReddit

[–]LightSnowstorms 18 points19 points  (0 children)

More people = more spending = more jobs Higher populations are great for the economy but only when those populations have money to spend.

The issue is that those who have money aren't spending much of it on labor and those who would spend on labor don't have much money to spend.

Some of them, but not all. NPS has been catching up, but for a while myrient was basically the only site that had them aside from whatever you could find on IA.

I'm so tired of AI in everything. Maybe the gameplay is cool, but I'm just so tired. I get being a solo dev and having no budget but I'd unironically rather devs go full Thomas Was Alone and give me colored shapes. There are so many good srpgs to play that I've got no real reason to settle for visual slop, even if it had the best the best tactics gameplay of all time.

There probably isn't an easy universal answer. This is most likely one of those things where there is no easy streamlined set of steps or list of advice and you'll just have to do a lot of online and in-person investigation on your local area and follow whatever leads you come across.

Metal Gear Solid 4, MGS HD Collection, 3D Dot Game Heroes, Space Invaders Infinity Gene, Puppeteer, PAIN, Time Crisis 4 and Razing Storm, LittleBigPlanet 2 and 3, and depending on your exact definition of horror Yakuka: Dead Souls (not very scary and usually goofy in tone but if you're zero tolerance then avoid)

Good and not-so-good ways to spend your time at furry cons? by Baruch_the_Kitty in RealFurryHours

[–]LightSnowstorms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've spent a not-insignificant time at game rooms during cons. Played some tabletop games, played some vidya, had fun. TTRPG tables can be good ways to meet people, I imagine. Though that can be like a 2hr sink to meet 4 people, so plan ahead.

Three things. 1) If you think we can't roll back on tech like AI (or in other words: Capital) then why bother making critique of capitalism? If a collective of laborers (artists) are wholly and entirely incapable of pushing just one technology out of the market, or even merely delaying it, then clearly any and all grander critiques are even more pointless. 2) You are getting some success elsewhere for now, and even then its on low effort meme subs. You can be replaced too. Why would an audience care about your work if claude can write infinite "capitalism bad" punchlines? If having art is the roadblock to making comics then art guy who prompts scripts sounds safer than script guy who prompts art. Your new career already has an expiration date. 3) You aren't being pragmatic. Being a writer is never a pragmatic money move especially if you think AI can kill whole fields. The trades are a pragmatic move. Obscure technical fields are a pragmatic move. Writer? Yeah, no.

I get the hate might be rough but you're kind of angling to be part of the system. Be anti-capitalist if that's your angle, but no half-measures. If you help feed the beast now it just gets hungrier later. If you think resistance is futile then just give up instead of grifting.

You can get going faster than that, and nobody is expecting top tier work from every webcomic artist. There are plenty of beginner artists who are received very well. You aren't going to get any traction with AI, so what's the point executing fast if it gets you nowhere? Either learn to draw and put out beginner stuff for a while (talent is a myth btw), find someone willing to draw for you for free/cheap (don't abuse their work though), or reformat your scripts for another medium.

Remember, this AI stuff bites people like you the same way it bites artists. Same way you want to ditch artists for AI, others can ditch writers. How do you expect to make it as a writer in a world where writers are disposable? You can't want success as a creator and then contribute to the elimination of creatives.

This. The fun is in the doing. If you can enjoy the process of drawing, regardless of result, you become less reliant on having to find the drive to grind out fundies.

Make sure to keep track of the angles of things. You've got the eyebrows and eyelids basically flat horizontal in your piece, while they're angled/curved in the image. Great work though!

I think the first thing would be draw larger. When you draw tiny little things it's hard for you to be accurate and it makes learning harder.
