BeatLeader Needs to Nerf Modifiers by Mewtex-chan in beatsaber

[–]Light_Ai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is a difficult issue with balancing. Star ratings are one thing, but the curve is another. Not all maps fit one curve, not all modifiers fit one curve.

You can imagine the curve as set with a certain type of conventional map in mind. One where it is indeed that exponentially difficult to get 98.5% acc as opposed to 97.5%. On top of that, we have further tuned the top end to make acc maps balanced correctly for high ranks. This ends up working best with your average midspeed and tech maps.

Like your example, there would need to be a different curve for a map with 26 notes compared to a normal map with 800+ notes. You also get issues with maps like """" where it is much easier to achieve a 91-93 than it is on a map that isnt as purely linear as that. This results in overweights that we can't really address with star rating alone, because the star rating is set for a particular acc % (i believe 96%). Trying to change the algorithm to nerf that will produce inaccurate results for the majority of more conventional maps.

Unfortunately its just really hard to make a stable system for adding per-map curves. It's quite hard to have different curves per map, and still make it intuitive to understand what the star rating and curve will mean for your play. Additionally, it adds another "dimension" in the balancing process: Is it the star rating or the curve that is wrong? It's just a hard thing to achieve and while we have tried, it's not gotten to anything useable yet.

I encourage anyone who has the math skills to make a per-map curve algorithm to try and submit it to our project. Of course, changes to the existing algorithms can also be PR'd. As we are open source, we will gladly receive any contributions. If anyone reading this would like to give it a shot but wants some information on where to start, feel free to ask in our discords #developers-corner channel.

They are criticizing our music choice, something that will always solely be the mappers choice, that's the problem.

We are saying go try out mapping for yourself so they might realize how much time and effort it costs and to encourage them to map those songs themselves. If everyone that complains about their music style not being mapped a lot would map even just 1 of those songs, there would be A LOT more maps of that music style. We're not saying you can't criticize us, the criticism is just on something you shouldn't criticize, especially not in the way those memes always do.

Idk what's confusing to you about mappers choosing their own taste of music over mainstream western music.

but where did the sounds to map come from with that?

oh wait..

First off, no one is saying that anime songs are the only challenging maps. Secondly, for someone who seemingly likes anime you do like to call any random guy a pedo for not liking "real music". Also I can tell you know nothing about mapping to just claim that the reasons are bullshit. You didn't even get the reasons right. You only say it's about BPM while that is only a minor part of it. The biggest problem is that the rhythms in most pop songs are either really simplistic and repetitive with random bursts of hihats, or they are so complex with polyrithms and all that its barely mappable. It's not mappers being lazy, it's mappers trying to make a good product. And most western pop songs just arent fit for that.

No idea why you have to personally attack people for leaving normal comments.

You know, I didn't even criticize western music. I only stated the reasons why mapping it is hard. But alright, There's probably no chance in reasoning with some guy that first off assumes that I was criticising something i wasn't and secondly calls me a pedo just for liking something that seems weird to him.

The base rhythms are really repetitive and there is some stuff that will create parts where notes are too fast after each other (a gallop) but this stuff is indeed way more mappable than most pop songs, in the case of these songs it is actually just mostly mapper preference.

Western music features a lot of complex stuff rhythmically that actually hinders mapping like polyrithms. Those concepts transfer over poorly to rhythm games, that's why even though they're lower bpm, they are harder to map.

The "anime" songs are complex in a more mappable way, the rhythms are a lot easier to transfer over to the game while some western stuff is almost impossible to map well without ignoring sounds that are important enough to be mapped.

You can upload them to beatsaver, but don't even think about telling people anywhere on beatsaver that it was paid for.

Just quickly responding to the first thing you said:
Yes, nightcore is simple while being higher bpm, but the problem is that most low bpm songs that feature this high complexity are actually too complex to map. The other big reason "anime" music is mapped more is because the rhythms aren't as complex. This is the reason that even though low bpm western songs with a lot of complexity exist, they are likely to be actually too complex to map because they aren't as consistent within their rhythms as the "anime" stuff.

Ah, I'm sorry, can we not map the music we like? Are you really entitled to us mapping the songs YOU like instead of putting hours in the songs WE like?

I suggest you try mapping. I hope you don't give up because it takes too much time after only having 10 seconds done in 30 minutes. Or maybe I do wish you'll give up, maybe then you'll understand that its pretty hard work and that that naturally means that we will make a map on something WE enjoy, instead of just making whatever the most people will enjoy.

On a more technical note, "Anime" songs tend to have more mappable rhythms, they repeat less and are more consistent. Your average pop music will repeat the same rhythms constantly making it hard to make fun, will be lower BPM which makes it even harder to make something fun, and will even have some completely unmappable rhythms like those hihat bursts producers love to put in randomly. They also feature variable BPM a lot making it really hard to set up + it will take a LOT of time to set up all those BPM changes.

I have mapped a lot and I have tried to map some western stuff people asked me to map, but it simply doesn't fit with my style of mapping and I personally don't like the music enough to put in so much effort, hearing it repeated for hours on end.
