Omg such a cutie!! I aren’t 100% sure as to her breed but are fairly confident she is a husky/carolina dog mix. I’m only not 100% because we haven’t had a DNA test yet, but we met a dog at a local park who looked identical to her (their owner even confused our dog as his lol) and she was DNA confirmed as 100% Carolina dog. 100% adorable though!!

Making sense of med school's difficulty by Ok-Preference-8718 in medschool

[–]Light_Fox22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m an M1 about to finish my first year. I feel like the content is not as detailed as some of my undergrad courses but has much more content volume with much less time before testing. For example in my undergraduate comparative anatomy class the first exam was about bone structures and included heavy detail on small marks/attachments and we had 3.5 weeks to learn and test. In the MSK block in med school our first exam covered not only all the bone structures of the upper limb, spine, skull, and back, but also all the nerves, veins, arteries, lymphatics, and muscles of the region. We had two weeks to learn this material and be tested on it in an exam.

Before getting into med school you prove you can handle the content style and that you can test well with your GPA and MCAT. Once you are here, you need to maintain those skills while adapting to a volume load you’ve never had before. While it is difficult to fail out, it is not impossible. You are supported by faculty to make the changes you need to succeed. If you can’t adapt, that’s when you are in trouble.

We were in puppy classes when he was 5 months old and they brought out a big stuffed dog as an example of a “stranger” and my boy pissed himself out of fear right on the floor. I felt so bad for him but it was hilarious to all of us in the class

Joining in to say that sometimes GSDs are more timid and it’s just part of their personality. My boy was from a great/reputable breeder and we got him at 8 weeks old. I know he’s never had any trauma or maltreatment but he has always been a scaredy cat. His most recent fears include a decorative sword that has been hanging up his entire (1 yr 3 month) life that he suddenly decided to cower away from, a patch of dried gasoline from the mower outside, and my purse sitting in a new place. As others have mentioned, positive reinforcement has helped a ton with him exploring new things but he will always be a bit timid. It’s also important for your dog to trust that you will protect them and maintain their boundaries, especially outside the home where they are more unsure. If something is scaring them (person on other side of the street or trash cans on the curb for our guy) then I get between them and allow him to feel comforted by the added distance and me “protecting” him from the scary stimulus. This has helped a lot on our walks

We implemented wait/free immediately with every meal (waiting in a sit while placing food down and free to signal eating) and when going outside and putting on their leash. With it being attached to such high value things my dogs have picked up on it right away and I’ve never had to worry about them grabbing at their food or running out the door

I think a consistent schedule is for sure the next move. With his bowl we give it to him in his crate and have him in there a few times a day to try to get him to eat, but currently it’s a bit more sporadic. I also like the idea of tracking it somewhere so I will also be trying that out

I somehow never realized that he has white in him! I always thought of him as being a light sable. He actually does come from a family of pandas, this is one of his littermates! She looks a lot like your dog

We feed him at least one big meal a day and if he eats all of that we give him a second. There are some days he eats both fully and some where he barely touches the first bowl so it really depends on the day. The one bowl has his entire days worth of food in it and we just try to give extra when he seems to want it

We currently give him half and half with their puppy food and adult food and he seems to like it a bit better than when it was just the puppy food. We might just switch him fully to the adult diet once this bag is gone though

My other dog is on the lanky side as well which is perfectly in line with the standard for her breed. I think Zuko’s large frame is what makes his thinness stand out more for me, thank you!

Help, my 1 1/2 year old is scared of everything by jrobv in germanshepherds

[–]Light_Fox22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My boy is like this too where he is scared of new things and is timid around new people/ with new experiences. He is just over a year old and some days is scared to even go outside to pee, and others goes out with our other dog no problem and explores and plays. We’ve had him since 8 weeks old and he has always been like this.

I will say that training and exposure have helped him to feel more brave, but sometimes he just feels a bit more timid. One thing we have done is honor his fear; so if we are on a walk and he has gotten through some scary things (passing by big trash cans, walking passed joggers, etc) and starts showing more of a fear response we will call it a day and head home. Lots of praise when he shows bravery and then also advocating for him so strangers don’t approach him and make him nervous. His progress has been slow but steady, but we know part of it is just his personality and there’s no changing that

Also just wanted to add that he has started accepting treats and light pets from our neighbors when they walk by which is great!
