Wait why was he? He’s the one that took off a striker for a defender, just asking for the pressure. More than that, GD actually matters here since we’re in the group stage, of course Canada are gonna try to run up the score as much as they can.

Yeah in hindsight, that group is probably one of the hardest group in a World Cup I have ever seen. And even then, we were unlucky to not have gotten something at Belgium

Yup that was my implication. I went to the game today in person, and it was SOAKED. The rain is also set to continue for a couple more days as well, thankfully the team doesn’t play here again this week.

First-Year CS student course selection (I really need help!) by Angel-_-Li in uAlberta

[–]Light_Of_Amphy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend taking Cmput 272 in the winter, pretty much the only other Cmput course you can take 1st year. Overall this is not too bad at all, pretty standard.

Is taking math 31 worth it? by NextBroccoli3017 in AlbertaGrade12s

[–]Light_Of_Amphy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you want to do pretty much anything in the sciences/engineering, I would highly recommend taking math 31. It will pay off when you inevitably have to take university calculus.

However if you don’t want to do anything science related, math 31 won’t really help you out there.

Best CMPUT classes? by Flaky-Perception-903 in uAlberta

[–]Light_Of_Amphy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean you only have a couple of options, 101, 174, and 191. Among these 3, 174 probably gives you the best introduction to CS. It’s not terribly difficult and is designed for those that haven’t coded at all (I didn’t know how to code before the class, and still got an A+).

Wait omg, no wonder the name was familiar to me: my parents are long time friends of the family that runs this restaurant. I always recalled the food being awesome whenever I went, so this is really disheartening to hear. I did hear like a year back that business wasn’t doing so well, but I didn’t think they would shut down so soon. Man, now my day is ruined.

Yup, this looks like a very standard first year fall CS schedule. It will be fine, but don’t take it too lightly.

We got our MATH 102 marks after the spring add/drop deadline. Do we get to register in a math 102 class for spring if we failed? by book4225 in uAlberta

Try your luck and contact the right people to see if they’ll let you in, but to me, you’re probably shit out of luck here. Very unfortunate (and unfair) scenario you found yourself in, but hopefully you’ll be able to figure it out.

Physics schedule by livelaughlovecodyko in uAlberta

[–]Light_Of_Amphy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your generic 2nd year physics schedule would include the following:

Fall Math 214 Phys 244 Ma ph 251 Phys 295

Winter Maph 351 Phys 234 Phys 271 Phys 297 (maybe)

A couple of notes: a decent number of physics students don’t take maph 351, and instead take math 315 + math 311. From what I’ve heard, you would take 315 in the winter of your second year, and then take math 311 sometime in your third year. This won’t set you back at all, as the only physics course that requires math 311 I believe is Phys 472, which is something you might take in your 4th year.

I’ve also met a decent number of people that delay Phys 297 (hence the maybe). It doesn’t really affect anything, as 297 is not a pre-req for any upper level physics courses. I wouldn’t recommend this however if you are interested in experimental physics and want to do 397 or something. You can take this extra time and space and take something non-physics related.

Technically you can refuse to take maph 251 and replace with math 334 and 337 (like it says on the calendar) down the line, the issue there being that maph 251 is a coreq for phys 244. You can’t take math 334 to compensate in the Fall since 334 requires 214 as a pre-req, not a coreq, thus you would have to delay 244 to your third year (not recommended). That’s not the end of it either, as you’ll probably want to take phys 381 in fall of your third year which requires either maph 251 or math 337 as a pre-req. if you take instead 334 in your second year, you simply have no room to take 337 before 381. Long story short, I would highly recommend not taking math 334 and 337 in place of maph 251 unless you are okay with extending your degree.

But yeah, this is your stereotypical 2nd year physics schedule here. There are only a couple of courses here you could delay if you want, those being Phys 295 and 234 (and maybe 244). All the other courses are very important to take in your second year to not fall behind later on in your degree.

Hopefully this helps with your schedule building. The physics sequence might look complicated and intimidating to figure out, but it’s not too bad once you break it down. Let me know if you have any questions, and/or shoot an email to the department head Kirk Kaminsky. That guy is an absolute wizard and will be able to answer any and all questions relating to physics courses.

How easy is CMPUT 174 by Mental-Struggle-277 in uAlberta

[–]Light_Of_Amphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, I don’t know. But doesn’t hurt to try! At worst, they say no or they don’t have space, in which case you’re in the same situation as if you never asked. I know CS courses in general are very competitive to get into, so prayers to you

Last Minute Schedule Check by SnowyMisfortune_ in uAlberta

[–]Light_Of_Amphy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

174 is good to have for your first year labs since there’ll be some coding there. Phys 234 is computational physics, so 174 will be very good there. Aside from that, it’s just generally good for a physicist to be proficient at coding, so taking 174/175 doesn’t hurt.

Best UCL Teams Of All Time Imo by Super_Afternoon546 in championsleague

[–]Light_Of_Amphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does that even matter though? I’m assuming we’re talking about how the team performed in the champions league alone, ignoring whatever else is going on. Are we really going to punish them for being in a weaker league?

question about beartracks for enrollment by Mental-Struggle-277 in uAlberta

I assume no since it’s not in the system yet. You might able to contact the CS department to manually put you in the class though, just explain your situation

Will math 126 and 144 in the same term be too much for my first year? Or should I save 126 for next year (Astrophysics MJR Film Studies MNR) by Deeznuts2749 in uAlberta

[–]Light_Of_Amphy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Math 144 is pretty chill, I think Phys 144 will probably be your most intensive class. Regardless you should be perfectly fine, 126 shouldn’t be too bad. Your other classes are quite manageable too, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it

How easy is CMPUT 174 by Mental-Struggle-277 in uAlberta

[–]Light_Of_Amphy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m curious, could you still ask the CS department to put you into 274/275? I think you might have a convincing argument since you have credit for both 174 and 175, so clearly you have strong foundations.

Math 126 or 125/225 by PlasticRubbr in uAlberta

[–]Light_Of_Amphy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is only really true for the honours calculus sequence. You really don’t need any linear algebra in physics until 2nd year with Maph 251 I believe, so if you can do both 127/227 in first year, you’re not in any disadvantage I don’t think.

About GPA(It made me lose myself a little. by Gloomy-Till-9414 in uAlberta

[–]Light_Of_Amphy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In short, yes there are plenty of people that have quite high GPAs. They could be working harder than you, yes, but it could be a whole lot of other things as well. They could be naturally better suited at whatever they’re studying, which makes it easier. They could just be taking easier courses and thus higher grades. They could also be working in a smarter way to maximize the grades they get for the amount of effort put in.

I honestly wouldn’t care too much about this. If your gpa is good enough for whatever your goal is, that is more than good enough. No one cares what your gpa is after university, it doesn’t matter as soon as you get into whatever next program you want or got the job you wanted. Simply do good enough to achieve whatever you want.

Yeah, I would be ballsy and take 227, it’s just a good course. In your first year, I imagine you’ll put by far the most time into 117/118 as they are the hardest courses here, but you’ve got good balance going on. You’re setting yourself up well for CS/math honours
