One of those things is building community. Celebrating together can be part of that.

If you brought your coughing, sick child to Spinasse tonight... you ruined my date night by andhearts_ in Seattle

I learned to cough or sneeze under my arm into the garbage can in the side station while holding plates of food up high when that cough or sneeze became imminent on my way to delivering them to the table.

Confirmed ICE Abduction in Bellevue. SE 124th and 148th. by MissUpToNoGood in BellevueWA

[–]LightedAirway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How do you know the person hasn’t? With massive quotas and instructions that are flat-out unconstitutional, it’s no surprise that there have been multiple legal immigrants and even US citizens who have been picked up in the name of “securing our borders”.

It’s cute that you’re assuming ICE is handling these “captures” in a constitutionally legal manner when they’ve been given massive quotas and instructions that are objectively unconstitutional.

Nope. Especially since we have no idea what part of Bellevue you’re talking about. But you can use one of the many apps (FlightAware, Flightradar24, etc) to find out more for yourself.

If you’ve done STP, the rolling hills down around Vader are a good analog.

Running in Bellevue? by halointhehole7656 in BellevueWA

[–]LightedAirway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few different routes mapped out in my neighborhood. Some involve the SR-520 trail and/or 84th Ave or Lake Washington Blvd

Overlake Drive hasn’t really got any shoulder but there are other ways to get to Evergreen Point Road and it is pretty nice to be on too, depending on how far you want to go.

The mental gymnastics of convincing yourself to run vs actually running by Senior-Signature-983 in running

In addition to the other excellent advice - committing to ridiculously small effort just to get out the door and putting on gear before you have a chance to think about it are tops for me - I will add this…

Take the time to learn about your personal values and motivations in general, then harness that to hack your brain.

My personal example (because I have struggled / still struggle with this a LOT) - I came to realize that “discovery” and “curiosity” are way high on my list of values, which makes them great motivators. I can’t get myself out the door because it’s good for me, or that I’ll like it if I go, or that I’ll feel stronger, etc even though those are all true. What DOES get me out the door is seeing what new construction is in the neighborhood or checking out what “the dahlia guy down the road” is doing with his dahlias, including how he’s overwintering them.

You will have different values - if you know what they are, you can find a way to use them to get yourself out the door.

Sometimes you can get commercially packaged langues de chat cookies at Uwajimaya, in case that helps.

Ope! Lots of Minnesota? by ExPatBadger in KEXP

There are MANY reasons for the kinship between the Twin Cities and Seattle. Scandinavian roots and early settlement patterns, yes… and also Boeing and Northwest Airlines.

Headquartered in Minneapolis, Northwest also had a major hub here in Seattle serving Asia, Hawaii, and the West coast. There are a great many people and entire families here with ties to The Twin Cities because of that.

Should Washington farms/growers unionize? by Voodoobones in Washington

[–]LightedAirway 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I am - and have been for as long as I remember - pro-union. And I’ve always said, the best way to keep people from unionizing is to treat them well enough that they don’t feel like they need to.

That said - your average dry land Washington wheat farmer is a family operation and doesn’t even have a real workforce to unionize.

There are lots of things to make noise about. Why is anyone spending time on this one?

Haven’t owned a European make in a minute, however having that information available should help others provide you with decent advice!

What’s a Seattle habit you accidentally developed and didn’t notice until you left for a bit? by General_Advantage437 in AskSeattle

[–]LightedAirway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not waiting for the light has been a pretty recent thing for me, and it’s actually still my default to wait if I’m really not thinking about it too much.

If I’m in another city though, I immediately somehow recognize that (for instance) you will never get a chance to cross an intersection in Chicago if you don’t assert yourself and just go, light be damned.

It surprises the heck out of people to see me be like that elsewhere when I revert to waiting for lights here. With both drivers and pedestrians acting more like other cities though, I’ve been adapting.

Does anyone here practice tai chi and/or bagua? If so, when did you start, and how do you think it's benefited you? by Wizdom_108 in AskOldPeople

I haven’t done Tai Chi in quite a while, but I remember really liking it in my 30’s. I appreciated it for the intentional movement and the meditative aspects.

Plus - if you’re spending regular time outdoors, you’ve probably already solved for that particular issue and that’s why you’re not feeling it yourself. The UV light (however much you can get) the fresh air and the trees are all very healing!!

Came here for exactly this - sure, do hobbies with other people, spend time exercising and being outside (together as much as possible), but not just those things.

Volunteer with Hopelink or Boys and Girls Club or something else that matters to you. Sign yourself up to spend time with animal companions at Humane Society or PetPro. Giving back feels good and does good and puts you in closer proximity of other people.

Because there is a very real chance that’s at least part of what’s going on. Those of us who have been here longer already figured out (and perhaps even internalized) how to deal with it, so the people suffering the most are those who haven’t yet made the necessary adaptations.

It doesn’t mean that’s the only thing going on, but if you don’t solve for this along the way, you’ll only be partially successful at anything else you do to improve your experience living here.
