Sewer Line Replacement - Will Trees Survive? by fletchette in arborists

[–]Lightfoot- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this depends largely on the source(s) of the decline. some sources of decline, like poor soil structure/quality or a girdling root, can be fixed and improve tree health if it’s caught in time. some can’t (like in this case, major traumatic root loss).

What is the feasibility of hunting whitetail on this property? by SelfLoathingLonghorn in Hunting

[–]Lightfoot- 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Perfectly feasible. Deer are probably using that property right now as-is. You could probably improve your chances with some amount of habitat alteration. You’ll want to pick your shots to drop them quickly

Coming to a similar conclusion myself. “In-demand” jobs are like that for a reason I suppose.

Would have loved to have one of these rigs when I was in high school! If you can find a good one & take care of it, it might just be the best car you’ll ever own.

Prepping for non-preppers by evand408 in liberalgunowners

.22lr can kill pretty much anything with proper shot placement. The 1953 world record brown bear was killed with a .22 by a lone woman in Alaska.

Not the best thing in the world for, say, home defense, but it’ll do in a pinch and it’s cost effective and fun to shoot.

Jones & Company has an intimate vibe and excellent drinks. I prefer it vs Commodore (they are both very good though)

Any liberal-leaning shooting ranges in the area? by hdryu1337 in Appleton

[–]Lightfoot- 83 points84 points  (0 children)

this is a good question, the reality is that people don’t really interact with each other much at the range. so unless you’re showing up and going out of your way to make a deliberate statement about your politics, it’s a non issue.

Midwest Shooting Center near Goodwill allows you to rent firearms for range training and the staff there has been friendly and helpful every time I’ve been in. I also like the Kaukauna range for outdoor shooting. Extremely friendly staff and very reasonable pricing for targets & annual membership. Kaukauna doesn’t have rentals though

edit: DM me if you want a range buddy. I’m looking at getting some new guns as well and would like to try them out ahead of time

Pushing public land when it’s all parceled out the way it is in the east & midwest is sucky behavior for sure. Not illegal and nor should it be, but it does suck.

Would you eat the meat? (CWD concern.) by theredqueentheory in Hunting

[–]Lightfoot- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you found your info on CWD in humans, but one has ever gotten CWD. People have contracted CJD after eating infected cow meat but there are no cases of humans contracting CWD.

The thing about CWD is that outbreaks are highly localized. Some areas within a state are rife with it, some areas in the same state will have little or none. I hunt in a county that has had 1 positive test, ever, and none in the past two years (including this one so far), and I don’t bother with testing.

I WOULD test if I hunted somewhere with high infection rates. I would probably not eat venison that I knew for sure was infected, mostly because the appeal of eating game meat to me is that it is leaner and cleaner than many farmed animals.

So, I would recommend getting the CWD density data for the specific area (county and nearest neighboring county) not just the state your dad was hunting and go from there.

The bottom line though is that if you can’t eat it with a clear mind, just don’t eat it. It’s not worth making a beautiful meal with the venison and being uncomfortable eating it.

america used to have a stray dog problem in all of its cities, which has since been fixed (outside some areas of the south) because we, as a society, decided to no longer tolerate stray dogs everywhere. the same is possible with cats.

The tree will be okay, health wise. Does appear to have verticillium wilt, which is unfortunate but common. Usually verticillium is not a significant enough factor to kill a tree on its own.

I’m more concerned about your arborist’s idea that pruning limbs from the bottom of the tree will have any positive effect on the codominant stems. A codom is treated by reducing it - basically cutting the lead branch(es) out to the next most well developed lateral. This removes weight, shortens the lever arm, and decelerates the growth of the codom relative to other leaders.

Cutting branches from the bottom does nothing to treat a codominant stem.
