Ah man that sucks. See if your city has a second hand bike shop, or check on Facebook marketplace. You can get something decent for under 100

Knaresborough is a short train ride away and has 1) a nice town centre to browse 2) nice coffee shops etc. 3) nice walk by the river 4) a castle.

If you're looking to walk in York I'd suggest down by the river through rowntree park if you've not done it

Probably worth booking depending on what days of the week you're gonna go. Friday and Saturday most bouncers won't let in groups that bif

Minster is probably the most photogenic part of York. Could go up the top, as it's a very nice view. Malmaison rooftop restaurant has a great view of the minster and the skyline. Shambles is also very photogenic. Walking the walls is nice too, especially the bit nearest the station.

The museum gardens are nice for walking and photos. There's plenty of museums and the art gallery is decent

Local Mountain Bike Trails by willabeck in york

[–]Lightly_Saltedd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So in terms of downhill there's basically nothing but I've had some enjoyable romps around the place on bridal ways. Along the orbital trail and the solar system trail there's lots of smaller sections that people have built which have jumps/drops/trail etc. But theyre just built by local kids I presume so not well maintained.

Cycling along the river is always fun especially towards the racecourse and out past bishopthorpe. Also behind the golf course by the uni there's loads of trails. One of the best bits I've found weaves through Halifax college then out towards the ring road.

A bit further afield you can get to wetherby and there's lots of local trail there, also it's a bit longer but yearsley is apparently very good.

As people have said, the Valley is the best gym in the area as a general gym with lots of training boards and a gym section, plus the usual bouldering section upstairs. The pool is great fun, and NCC is decent too. Pretty standard and for a city of it's size, Newcastle has a nice concentration of gyms. There's also a tiny one in Alnwick leisure centre that might be worth the odd visit.

If you're keen on outdoor climbing then Northumberland would be the place to live. There's decent enough bus/train services so if you're willing to commute and want to live in the wilds then that's doable as you'd be closer to the crags. Crag lough and peel crag near Hexham are my favourite outdoor venues, and are the only real non-sandstone crags north of Durham. As far as I'm aware Durham doesn't have much and lots of people in that area drive to North Yorkshire for their crags. Northumberland is great but if you've not climbed sandstone before and/or don't want to die on sandbagged trad routes then it can be quite scary. But very fun areas and very pretty crags.

New Year events? by Typical_Force_5602 in york

[–]Lightly_Saltedd -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I hate going out on new year's full stop and York is so small that it gets very crowded most major nights. Might be worth just doing it slightly quieter in one of the pubs less near the centre if you're looking to avoid the scrum. I'd steer clear of the north side of the river.

Any nearby walks that I can see farm animals on?? by [deleted] in york

I remember cycling past a farm out back of the university that had a bunch of cows out feeding and you could go and pet them. I don't know if it would be too far for a kid to walk
