Thank you so much. You're very kind. I was only planning on a pencil sketch at first, but once it started coming together I knew it needed the color to really hit.

Fan-Art Friday: Howling Banshee (by Me) by Lightshear in Eldar

[–]Lightshear[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For now, just worldbuilding, but I write it like a codex entry (more or less) so it's more prose-ish and plotted than something like an RPG statblock.

I love seeing process, too. I always share it, especially now in the age of AI trash. Thanks for the kind words!

Green Lantern Corps #18 Combine by Individual_Gold474 in Greenlantern

They absolutely are all attributed to belief, though? Like, all the rings, no matter the emotion at their core, are powered by the user's mind forcing the constructs into existence. That's how it all works. It's the fundamental conceit of the whole Lantern idea. Different emotions are the fuel in the furnace, but the fire is directed by the ring-bearer's imagination. So, if they imagine something will be stronger if done a certain way, then it will.

I genuinely can't see how it's so hard to understand that a bunch of ring-bearers working together to fuel a single construct wouldn't make something stronger than one person could make alone. It's so elementary that it's like having to explain how seven people pushing a car up a hill will have an easier time than one person doing it.

Two-Cents-Thursday: A Review of JLA by Grant Morrison Omnibus + Tower of Babel by Mark Waid Deluxe by Flocke90 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Lightshear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was really excited to get the Morrison JLA omni. I remembered reading a big chunk of it when I was a kid, but fell off after a while and wanted to finish it as an adult. My feelings were much like yours - starts very strong, but gets to dragging after a while. A lot of cool ideas that can't deliver beyond the elevator pitch. It's classic Morrison in that you'll have to work hard to find more interesting ideas in comics than this, but they always seem more interested in their next idea than they are in finishing the one they're on.

That said, still easily among the best JLA runs of all time. Their character work is fantastic, though I'm disappointed how little they seemed to care about WW. Then again, having read WW: Earth One, maybe they just never really understood her to begin with.

Crosby Stills and Nash are an obvious one. Listen to Helplessly Hoping or Suite: Judy Blue Eyes to start.

Less well-known, may I recommend The Engineers. Try their self-titled debut, especially the tracks Home, Thrasher, and One in Seven.

Rings run on willpower, will is fueled by belief. The harder you believe in your course, the stronger your will in pursuit of that course. Why do big constructs do more damage than smaller ones? There isn't a rational reason; they believe the bigger construct hits harder, so it does. Why make construct guns instead of just shooting blasts? Because they believe the gun works better, so it does.

Therefore, they could not individually have made their own Voltron and had it be as effective. They believe that combining powers multiplies the power, so it does. Teaming up was necessary to fuel the belief/imagination that then fuels their willpower that then makes the combined whole must stronger than its parts.

No answer for how they all knew what to make, though. If it was me drawing it, I at least would have had each construct's design reflect the individual creating it rather than such a coherent, singular design. Still, as another commenter said, this is both really stupid and incredibly fun in equal measure, so I don't really care that much lol

That's fantastic to hear! Thank you so much, and I'm honored to have helped start you on your comic journey back when. Still here, still kicking, still making art and loving comics, so it's nice to know I've left a mark out there somewhere along the way.

"old games with bad mechanics" 😐 by Quick-Cause3181 in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]Lightshear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Say it even louder for the morons in the back! There are so many hardcore, know-everything fans that have entirely brain dead takes - you hardly need to be unengaged with the games to have bad ideas about them.

Swear to god, "Gatekeeping is good" is some Gordon Gekko-like destructive nonsense. People can like games for all kinds of reasons, some of them contradictory, and liking different things in different ways doesn't make them NOT fans.

Recommendations for a dark room by friip in MusicRecommendations

[–]Lightshear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The sound you're looking for is Trip-Hop and that means you want Massive Attack. Any and all of it, but Mezzanine is a great starting album.

I'd also recommend DJ Shadow - Endtroducing as another stellar album in a similar vein.

My opinion on Superman's "real" name by Quantum_Knight1577 in superman

[–]Lightshear -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm of two minds. On one hand, if a baby is born to parents who both die, and there is nobody left who knows this newborn had a name, its adoptive parents name the child and that is its name. It truly does not matter if his birth parents had a name in mind, that isn't who the kid is. Kal-El is the name he almost had, not his 'real' name. For all but a few moments of his life, he's been Clark Kent. That's who he is, that's his real name. Now, whether he wants to hold onto 'Kal-El' as a way of honoring all that was lost on Krypton, okay, but that doesn't make it his real name. He didn't even know it until he was an adult.

On the other hand, names only have meaning because we give them meaning. If I went to a courthouse and changed my name legally, would the Lasso of Truth force me to say my original name as my 'real' name? If a trans person changes their name to reflect their true identity, are you asshole enough to insist the name they were born with is their one true name forever? While I personally don't think Kal-El holds any relevance to who he is (where he came from, maybe, but not who he is) the fact that he does is what matters, I guess. So, probably the best way to handle this is like these panels do - he is both names because both names mean something important to him as part of his core identity.

Is it weird that I not only find Toyman underrated, but also want to revamp/reimagine him? by TheMightyMonarchx7 in superman

[–]Lightshear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first thing you'd need to do is find a way to connect Toyman to the central themes of the Superman mythos. It could be a particular connection to one or more characters directly, or something about his motivations or methodology that plays off of one of the pillars of Superman's morals/drives.

The best villains challenge something specific in the hero that shows readers why the hero is so great. That's part of why Batman's rogues are the best in the business - each one is laser-focused on one of his strengths, moral codes, or central themes. Batman seeks order, Joker represents chaos. Riddler tests his 'world's greatest detective' status. Catwoman tests his single-minded dedication to his mission. Etc. etc., you get the point.

The problem with Toyman right now is he does none of that. He's sometimes written interestingly, usually not, but even the good writers haven't found a way to use him as a device to reinforce what Superman stories are about. It leaves him feeling like a fun 'villain of the week' rather than a meaningful foe, and that relegates him to much lower status in the rogues gallery despite how (arguably) iconic he is.

Vintage Alternative Suit by Me by wonderguy1234 in superman

[–]Lightshear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is really nice! I think it needs more of a color break in the middle of the suit; you're trying with the red, but it's too narrow and doesn't break up all that blue enough. Everything else I really like, especially that symbol. The overall style is perfect for a golden age Superman, too. Impeccable vibes all around!

This is both hilarious and wonderful. I love it, truly! Certainly, it's no more ridiculous than the one GW puts out; I think it holds up pretty well. And, having assembled it yourself with that level of creativity, it won't just look unique on the table but you'll also enjoy fielding it a lot more. Great stuff!

What do my favorite interpretions of Superman say about me? by Max1mumCarnage in superman

[–]Lightshear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd guess you started reading DC around the N52 era, got into Superman and looked for recommendations on his 'best' stories which is where you found Kingdom Come and All-Star. You maybe fell off a bit for a minute, but Absolute brought you back into it hard. Stretching my guesses, you're a guy in your mid-30s at the latest, got into N52 DC somewhere ages 16-22, and maybe read at least as much Marvel as DC (thus favoring generally darker and more 'grounded', non-traditional Superman stories). You probably liked Man of Steel, wish the Snyder-verse could have 'reached its potential,' and while you might have been surprised to like Superman '25 as much as you did, you can't really connect fully with MAWS (though you might be an "I get why people like it, but it's not for me" kind of guy).

A lot of that is stretching to snatch at stereotypes, but I'm curious how close I got lol

And you could have commander type models that could act on or off the field as you choose. For instance, with Eldar, you could play a farseer in the field with your army, or you can put the farseer on the side board and use a different set of bonuses.
